What do people think of our mountain biking tours?
Triston Arisawa

Had a great time. Our guides Marko and Costa were expert at their craft. Highly recommended this trip!!

This trip was one of the most fun experiences we have had on bikes. Riding across the Alps is the best way to experience the true nature of what they are. The guides are fun, professional, exceptional riders, easy going, and funny! The bikes are exactly the right set up for this type of riding, from easy pedaling uphill, to being able to bomb the downs, proper breaks, and really no issues while on the trip. The lodging was top notch, from 5 star hotels with spas, to a private alpine hut with wood fire sauna, and hot tub!!! Meals? you dont go hungry, and actually every launch or snack was the perfect portions, our whole crew ate it all without leaving leftovers! With a guiding background my wife and I felt this trip was amazing, it kept us stoked the whole time, and there was always something new around the corner! If your on the fence about booking this trip, then stop wasting time and get on it!!! You will not regret.

My husband and I spent a week riding with Aosta Valley Freeride and cannot say enough about their exceptional service & hospitality. We have traveled extensively with our bikes and can easily say that AVF exceeded our expectations – top-notch guide (Camilla), incredible rides, vast local knowledge, great apres, stellar communication before, during, and after, and extremely accommodating.

I loved my stay at Finca el Moro in May 2024.
Every animal on the farm has its own personality (including our wonderful hosts, Daisy & Eliot). The e-bike adventures were beautiful, fun and a great way to earn the delicious food served on the farm table each evening.
I stayed in the chestnut cottage, the room was so cute and the pool was the best place to cool off after a hot bike ride.
I can’t wait to go back!

Frequently Asked Questions About Mountain Biking

  • Mountain biking is more than just a sport; it’s an immersive experience that combines adrenaline with the serene beauty of the outdoors. Riders navigate rugged trails, where the sound of tires crunching over gravel and the rush of descending steep hills create a symphony of excitement.

At its core, mountain biking involves specialized bikes designed for off-road terrain, featuring robust frames and wider tires with deep treads. Different disciplines, such as cross-country (XC), downhill, enduro, and trail riding, cater to varying skills and preferences. XC focuses on endurance and speed, while downhill emphasizes technical prowess on steep descents.

The sport fosters a profound connection with nature, allowing riders to witness stunning landscapes in a unique way. It also builds community, with enthusiasts sharing tips, trail recommendations, and stories of their adventures. Local bike shops often serve as hubs for riders, creating a sense of belonging.

Safety is paramount, so wearing helmets and protective gear is essential, along with understanding trail etiquette. For beginners, it’s crucial to know one’s limits and progressively build skills on more technical terrains.

In essence, mountain biking is a captivating blend of adventure, physical challenge, and connection to nature.

  • Absolutely!

For those new to mountain biking, the thought of tackling rugged trails can be daunting. However, the sport is very accessible to beginners willing to dive in.

Choosing the right bike is crucial. Look for a model that fits well and matches your riding style—whether that’s a hardtail for cross-country or a full-suspension bike for technical trails. Comfort and control are essential as you navigate varied terrain.

Starting on easier, well-maintained trails is advisable. Local parks often have beginner-friendly paths that allow newcomers to build confidence while learning the basics of cornering, braking, and navigating turns. Joining a group or riding with experienced friends can enhance the learning experience, as they provide valuable tips and create a supportive atmosphere.

Safety is key. Always wear a properly fitted helmet and protective gear, and familiarize yourself with basic bike maintenance.

Patience is important—like any sport, mountain biking takes time to master. Embrace the learning curve, celebrate small victories, and don’t be discouraged by setbacks.

In essence, mountain biking is an exhilarating adventure that welcomes beginners. With the right gear, a willingness to learn, and a supportive community, newcomers can confidently embrace the trails.

  • The Best Age for Mountain Biking? Anytime You’re Ready to Ride

Mountain biking is a sport that transcends age, making it accessible and enjoyable for a wide range of riders. Whether you’re a kid with boundless energy, a teenager eager for thrills, or an adult seeking adventure and fitness, mountain biking offers something for everyone.

For children, the best time to start is when they’re comfortable on two wheels. Many kids begin with balance bikes, progressing to small mountain bikes with wide tires and easy handling as early as age 6 or 7. At this age, it’s all about fun and exploration—riding smooth, beginner-friendly trails that help them develop skills and confidence while connecting with nature.

Teens and young adults often thrive in mountain biking, as the sport aligns perfectly with their appetite for adventure and challenge. This is the stage where riders can push their limits, tackle more technical trails, and even compete in races. It’s a prime time to develop endurance, agility, and technical skills, all while enjoying the camaraderie of the mountain biking community.

For adults, especially those in their 30s and 40s, mountain biking offers a perfect balance of fitness and fun. It provides an excellent full-body workout, strengthening both the legs and core, while keeping the mind sharp as riders navigate varied terrain. Many adults find mountain biking to be a refreshing break from the monotony of traditional exercise routines.

Even for those in their 50s and beyond, mountain biking can be a great way to stay active and enjoy the outdoors. Modern bikes are designed with comfort and ease of use in mind, and electric mountain bikes (e-bikes) can provide an extra boost when needed, making longer rides or steeper climbs more accessible. The key is choosing the right level of difficulty and pacing yourself to match your fitness level.

  • Do You Need to Be Fit for Mountain Biking? Not as Much as You Think

While fitness helps in mountain biking, you don’t need to be an elite athlete to enjoy the sport. One of the beauties of mountain biking is its adaptability—you can tailor the experience to match your fitness level and gradually build up strength and endurance over time.

Beginners can start with easier, flatter trails, where the focus is more on learning bike handling skills rather than sheer physical exertion. Mountain biking offers a full-body workout, engaging your legs, core, and upper body, but the intensity depends on the terrain and trail difficulty. As you ride more, your fitness will naturally improve, and you’ll become more comfortable tackling longer or steeper routes.

Even if you’re not in top shape, there are options like e-bikes (electric mountain bikes) that provide pedal assist, allowing you to enjoy longer rides or tougher climbs without exhausting yourself. Riding regularly, even on moderate trails, can lead to significant fitness gains while still being fun.

With the right trail selection and a gradual approach, the sport is accessible to all fitness levels. The more you ride, the fitter you’ll become, but the thrill of the trail is something everyone can enjoy from the get-go.

  • There’s no single “best” country for mountain biking, but several destinations stand out for different reasons, depending on the type of terrain, adventure, and scenery you seek.

For sheer variety and stunning landscapes, Canada is a top contender. British Columbia, particularly Whistler, is a mecca for mountain bikers, offering world-class trails, epic descents, and the iconic Whistler Mountain Bike Park. Canada’s vast wilderness offers everything from alpine singletrack to dense forest paths, making it ideal for riders of all levels.

If you crave technical trails with jaw-dropping scenery, Switzerland might be your top pick. The Swiss Alps provide not only challenging terrain but also breathtaking views, with well-maintained trails that weave through rugged peaks, meadows, and charming villages. The combination of smooth trails and lift-accessed rides makes it a paradise for mountain bikers.

For those looking to explore wild, untamed terrain, New Zealand is hard to beat. The country is packed with world-class trails, from Rotorua’s lush forests to the legendary Queenstown Bike Park. New Zealand’s diverse landscapes make it a favorite for cross-country and downhill riders alike, with an adventure around every bend.

The United States is another heavyweight, with iconic spots like Moab, Utah, offering technical slickrock trails and jaw-dropping desert scenery. The U.S. also boasts the famous Colorado Trail, an epic cross-country challenge winding through the Rocky Mountains, as well as countless other regions offering varied terrain from coast to coast.

Ultimately, the “best” country depends on your preferences—whether it’s technical riding, epic scenery, or pure adventure.
