The 3 best trekking trips in Nepal

  • Everest Base Camp Trek

The Everest Base Camp Trek is a classic 12-16-day trek that takes you to the foot of the mighty Everest. It offers stunning views of Everest and other Himalayan giants, as well as unique insight into the life of the Sherpas in the Khumbu Valley.

  • Annapurna Circuit Trek

The Annapurna Circuit Trek is an extremely popular 14-21-day trek that circumvents the Annapurna massif and crosses a variety of landscapes, from lush valleys to arid plateaus, before crossing the highest pass in Nepal, Thorong La (5,416 m/ 17,769 ft).

  • Manaslu Circuit Trek

A less crowded alternative to the Annapurna Circuit Trek, the Manaslu Circuit trek takes you around the Manaslu massif, offering stunning views of Manaslu (8,163 m/26,781 ft ), the world’s eighth-highest mountain.

What do people think of Trekking in Nepal?

I will never forget that you believed in me when I didn’t believe in myself. For that, I will always be grateful.

The CTSS team went above and beyond every step of my journey, from when I booked my EBC trek to after I got home. Big Tendi Sherpa was a wealth of knowledge and thought if every little detail to ensure we made it to camp healthy. We stayed in the best tea houses along the way, and the amenities and service at EBC were next level, from the espresso bar to the massage tent.

Lorena Compean Casmiro

CTSS was an amazing guide. They provide all the support required to be able to achieve this big challenge. CTSS provide a lot of information prior and during the trekking to first ensure safety and to facilitate the successful completion of the trek.

The only drawback I had while engaging and interacting with Misty & Transformative Travel is the search for an accurate superlative. There are so many to choose from and picking just a few would not be right. Misty brings a wealth of knowledge and experience, and while it is not in your face, the breadth of his background is apparent. I thoroughly enjoyed the time I spent with him. His character is stellar and I am glad that our paths crossed.

Frequently asked questions about hiking in Nepal

  • Trekking in Nepal can vary in difficulty depending on the specific route chosen. However, the treks on average are on the difficult side, and here is why:

    • Altitude: Altitude sickness is a major concern in Nepal. The higher you go, the thinner the air gets, making it harder to breathe and exert yourself.  Gradual ascent for acclimatization is crucial.
    • Terrain: Trails can vary from well-maintained paths to rugged, uneven terrain with slippery rocks, scree, and even glaciers on some challenging treks.
    • Distance and duration: Longer treks with more daily walking hours will naturally be more demanding. Many hiking tours in Nepal include more than two weeks of consistent walking.
    • Weather: The weather in Nepal can be unpredictable, with frequent rainfall, snowfall, and temperature drops at higher altitudes. Be prepared for all conditions.

While trekking in Nepal is no walk in the park, with proper planning, training, and choosing a trek that matches your fitness level,  trekking in Nepal can be a rewarding and unforgettable experience.

  • Trekking in Nepal can be safe or dangerous, depending on your choices. Here are our 6 top recommendations for a secure and enjoyable Nepal trek:

    • Go with a (good) guide: Choose an experienced and licensed company with qualified guides trained in first aid and mountain rescue. Hiking Nepal’s national parks without a guide or porter is strictly forbidden, and it’s safer to have someone with you in case of emergencies or getting lost.
    • Bring the right clothes and gear: Ensure you have appropriate equipment for the specific trek and weather conditions, including sturdy footwear, warm clothes, and rain gear.
    • Accurately assess yourself: Be honest about your experience & physical fitness, and choose a trek that matches your abilities.
    • Grab travel insurance: Get travel insurance that covers medical emergencies, helicopter evacuation (if needed), and trip cancellation.
    • Follow established routes: Sticking to well-maintained trails on popular treks such as the Annapurna Circuit Trek minimizes the risk of getting lost or encountering dangerous terrain.
    • Acclimate appropriately: Altitude sickness is a serious risk. Ascending gradually and taking rest days at higher elevations is crucial.
  • The cost of trekking in Nepal can vary depending on several factors, including:

    • The specific trek you choose: The Everest Base Camp Trek will generally be more expensive than treks in less popular regions.
    • The type of package you choose: Guided packages with all meals and accommodation included will be more expensive than independent trekking, where you arrange everything yourself.
    • The duration of your trek: Longer treks, such as the Annapurna Circuit Trek or the Manaslu Circuit Trek, will naturally cost more.
    • The level of service you desire: Luxury lodges and helicopter transfers will significantly increase the cost.

We offer a wide range of itineraries for all budget levels, so we’re sure you’ll find one that fits your budget!

  • Most of the multi-day treks in Nepal are relatively challenging. Even if you’re not planning on summiting Everest, excellent fitness levels and prior high-altitude trekking experience are highly recommended.

That being said, if you’re new to trekking in Nepal, the Langtang Valley Trek is the perfect introductory trip.

This trek takes you through the beautiful Langtang Valley, known for its traditional villages and proximity to the Himalayas. With moderate climbs and a maximum altitude of around 3,800 m/12,467 ft, it’s the perfect intro to Himalayan hiking.

  • The Dhaulagiri Circuit Trek is famed for being the toughest hike in Nepal. Here are 4 reasons why it earned its reputation:

    • Remote location and camping: Unlike treks with lodges and teahouses like Annapurna, on the Dhaulagiri Circuit, you’ll be camping most of the way. This requires carrying more gear and dealing with potentially harsher weather conditions.
    • High altitudes and rough terrain: The trek traverses several high passes exceeding 5,000 m/ 16,400 ft like the French Pass and the Dhampus Pass. You’ll also often come across sections with challenging, physically draining features like rocky paths, moraines, and glaciers. Excellent fitness and experience handling high altitudes are crucial.
    • Technical sections: Some sections of the trek require basic technical skills like crampon or rope use, which adds another layer of difficulty.
    • It’s truly off-the-beaten-path: The route is less frequented than popular treks like the Annapurna Circuit or the Everest Base Camp Trek, so expect to encounter fewer amenities and support services.
