Best bike rides in the Alps

The Haute Route

  • A point-to-point journey from Chamonix, France, to Zermatt, Switzerland. It’s famed for its challenging climbs (made easier by e-bike), stunning scenery, and iconic mountain passes, including Col du Télégraphe and the Col du Galibier.

The Tour du Mont Blanc

  • This famous hiking route, also doable by bike, circumnavigates the majestic Mont Blanc, Western Europe’s highest peak. It traverses France, Italy, and Switzerland, offering a more relaxed pace and breathtaking panoramas of glaciers, valleys, and charming villages.

The Alps to the French Riviera

  • A ride that takes you from the heart of the Alps down to the glamorous French Riviera. You’ll cycle through picturesque Alpine villages, vineyards, and lavender fields, before you arrive at the sparkling Mediterranean coast.

The guided e-bike tour “Grand Tour Alps” through Switzerland, France and Italy was a great experience! The route led through beautiful landscapes and the routes were perfectly chosen. We really enjoyed the tour and can recommend it to anyone who enjoys riding an e-bike.

Exemplary organization, dream trails and landscapes, enchanting accommodation, tasty meals… A super dynamic team, always attentive, focusing on safety and offering constant technical support. The guides know how to adapt to everyone’s level. I did the Haute route des 3 pays (countries) and I was not disappointed by the technical level, challenges as I like them but well balanced, alternating with panoramic roads and walks through small villages. I’m already dreaming of a next adventure with E-Alps!! A big thank you to the whole team!!

Paradise for mtb. Very professional riders, excellent food, and you feel the love and passion the owners and the staff have for their clients and mtb. Beautiful place, it is a must visit!. Erick and Jess are very attentive, friendly and you feel this positive energy as soon as you get into their place.

Erik and Jess run an absolutely amazing place. It’s a perfect chalet in a wonderful setting with nothing less than remarkable food prepared by a charming and highly talented man named Lee. Erik, Jes and Ben are the best guides I’ve ever been with, whether it be on foot or on a bicycle. They go to enormous effort to make sure you have an astonishing mountain biking experience everyday you are their guest. I’ve been to a number of great bike hotels and MTB Verbier is at the very top of the list. I couldn’t have had a better time with the most fun, warm, welcoming and hyper-competent hosts/guides I’ve ever met.

More about cycling and mountain biking holidays in the Alps

  • Of course!

The Alps are a popular destination for mountain biking and cycling holidays, with routes designed for all experience levels.  There are even iconic cycling races that take place in the Alps, like the Tour de France.

  • Packing for a cycling trip in the Alps requires preparation for variable weather conditions and the demands of riding in mountainous terrain.

    • Bike: Ensure your bike is in good working order before your trip. Consider a tune-up and pack spare parts like tubes, tire levers, a pump or CO2 inflators, and a multi-tool for basic repairs.
    • Biking clothes: Pack breathable jerseys, bib shorts or padded cycling shorts, a windproof jacket, arm and leg warmers for adjusting to temperature changes, and long-fingered gloves. Also, bring a properly fitted helmet

Apart from this, standard rules apply: Bring moisture-wicking base layers, plenty of insulating gear, and some rain clothes. Each trip has its own demands, so make sure you check the “What do I need to bring?” section in the FAQ.

  • Training for your dream alpine cycling tour actually involves three elements:

    1. Building endurance: Gradually increase the distance of your rides, aiming for lengths similar to your planned Alpine stages. Climbs can get tough in the Alps, so find hilly terrain or use machines with simulated inclines.
    2. Improving strength & power: Include targeted exercises for core, legs, and upper body to improve power output and stability on the bike. Also, integrate high-intensity interval training (HIIT) sessions to boost your power and ability to handle short, steep climbs.
    3. Train with specificity: The best way to train for biking – is biking! If possible, train with the same bike and gear you plan to use in the Alps. This helps you get accustomed to the weight, handling, and shifting.
  • The Tour du Mont Blanc (TMB) can be biked, but it’s important to understand it’s not a traditional cycling route and requires some adjustments compared to a standard road bike path.

The TMB was originally designed as a multi-day hiking route, and some sections might not be suitable for cycling, particularly traditional road bikes. You’ll encounter unpaved sections, switchbacks, and potentially even some hike-a-bike portions, especially on steeper climbs.

Guided Tour du Mont Blanc bike tours usually circumvent these issues by offering alternative routes.

  • Of course, you can mountain bike the Haute Route. In fact, with an e-mountain bike, it’s more accessible than ever before!

The growing popularity of e-MTBs has opened up the Haute Route to a wider range of riders. E-bikes can assist with climbs, allowing you to enjoy the scenery and focus on technical sections. However, E-MTBs are still heavier than traditional bikes, so fitness and technical skills are still important.
