Mallorca (DWS Heaven): With its epic limestone cliffs rising straight out of the Mediterranean, Mallorca is the ultimate spot for deep water soloing. Skip the ropes and climb high above the crystal-clear water, knowing the sea will catch you when you take that thrilling fall.

Siurana (Technical masterpiece): Known for its razor-sharp crimps and steep overhangs, Siurana is a mecca for sport climbers. The routes here demand precision, balance, and endurance, offering some of the most challenging redpoint projects in Europe.

Anne Hormes

Just finished an unforgettable week on the advanced climbing course with Patxi and Jany, and wow – they were absolute magicians! Despite Spain dishing out some truly epic rain, these two always managed to find us a dry rock to climb on. They didn’t just adapt to the weather; they completely customized the training to match my goals, helping me level up in ways I hadn’t expected. Thanks to their incredible expertise and unbreakable spirits, I came out of this week feeling stronger, more confident, and more inspired than ever. Can’t recommend this duo enough – rain or shine, they’ll make it happen!

We were in Barcelona for a week and decided it would be nice to get out to Montserrat to climb. Not knowing the lay of the land we decided to get a guide. It was a great choice. It was a beautiful day and we had amazing views. Lisi was super helpful and walked us through our first multi-pitch route. It helps we’ve done a fair amount of sport climbing. I’d make sure anyone doing that has the basics down or sticks to single pitch.

Frequently asked questions about our Spain rock climbing trips

  • The best month for a rock climbing trip in Spain is definitely October

The temperatures start to cool down from the scorching summer heat, which makes comfortable for both sport and trad climbing. The rock is still warm from the sun, and you can enjoy longer days with less crowded crags since the summer tourists have thinned out. Plus, the fall foliage adds a stunning backdrop to your climbs, especially in areas like Siurana and El Chorro.

Whether you’re pushing for that hard project or just enjoying some leisurely climbs with friends, October strikes the perfect balance for a memorable climbing adventure in Spain.

  • Deep water soloing in Mallorca has achieved legendary status among climbers for a few reasons.

First, the island’s stunning limestone cliffs plunge dramatically into the crystal-clear Mediterranean, which creates an idyllic setting that’s hard to beat. The combination of aesthetic beauty and challenging routes makes every ascent feel like a true adventure.

Second, the variety of climbs available caters to all skill levels, from thrilling overhangs to more approachable routes. Everyone can experience the rush of climbing without the constraints of gear. You can scale the cliffs, push your limits, and then leap into the refreshing water below—all without a rope.

Lastly, the consistent weather in Mallorca means you can enjoy year-round climbing, but it’s in the warmer months that the magic really happens. The sense of freedom, the rush of climbing high above the water, and the stunning sunsets make deep water soloing here not just a sport, but an unforgettable experience.

It’s no wonder that climbers from around the world flock to Mallorca to test their skills and soak in the breathtaking views.

  • Absolutely, Spain is a hidden gem for trad climbers!

While the sport climbing scene gets a lot of attention, the trad routes here offer a wealth of adventure and challenge. Areas like Picos de Europa and Montserrat are iconic for their stunning rock formations and varied climbing styles.

In “the Picos”, you can find long multi-pitch climbs that weave through the dramatic limestone cliffs, which makes for both breathtaking views and technical challenges. Montserrat, with its unique conglomerate rock, is not only visually stunning but also home to some classic trad routes that will really test your gear placements and route-finding skills.

Then there’s Sierra de Guara, where you’ll encounter some incredible crack climbing and more traditional routes nestled in beautiful canyons. The variety is endless, from granite to limestone, and the sense of adventure is palpable as you seek out your next piece of gear placement.

Whether you’re looking for stunning scenery or technical climbs, Spain’s trad climbing is worth exploring. Just be prepared for a bit of a journey to find those less-trodden paths!

  • In Spain, the primary climbing grade system used is the French grading system, which is popular for sport climbing routes. This system ranges from 3 (easiest) to 9c (one of the hardest grades in the world). The grades often come with a “+” to indicate a route that is slightly more challenging than the base grade; for example, 6a+.

For traditional (trad) climbing, Spain also commonly uses the UIAA grading system. This system starts from I (easy) and goes up to X (very difficult).

  • Yes, you can definitely climb in Spain without a guide, but we’d always recommend for your first outing to be with a local expert

Spain is home to many well-established climbing areas with clear routes and plenty of information available. It’s feasible for experienced climbers to navigate independently.

But, while climbing without a guide can be rewarding, if you’re uncertain about the area or your climbing skills, joining a guided tour can provide valuable insights and enhance your experience. Plus, it’s always the safer option.
