Hiking in US National Parks

America's greatest wild places, on foot, with guides who know every trail, every season, and every secret worth finding.

America's parks, done right

Landscapes that rewrite the scale of everything

There’s no single America when it comes to hiking its national parks.

There’s the steaming, sulfur-tinged otherworldliness of Yellowstone. The silent immensity of the Grand Canyon at dawn. The cathedral-like hush of a Yosemite valley when the waterfalls are running and the granite walls rise 3,000 feet above you. The burnt sienna of the Utah desert, where hoodoos and arches look sculpted by wind rather than by time. The dripping, moss-covered rainforest of Olympic. The bone-dry Mojave, where Joshua trees stand like sentinels against the sky.

What unites all of it is scale—and a sense that you are small in the best possible way. America’s national parks are some of the last truly wild places on Earth, and hiking through them connects you to that wildness in a way no other mode of travel can. These are not sightseeing routes. They are proper adventures, where every day on the trail delivers something no highlight reel can prepare you for.

From first-timers to backcountry veterans

The beauty of hiking America’s national parks is that the trails don’t ask you to be anything other than curious. Whether you’re stepping onto a trail for the first time or you’ve got a dozen multi-day expeditions under your belt, there’s a trip here that fits.

Some journeys are gentle and accessible, meaning that they’re perfect for families, first-time multi-day hikers, or anyone who wants to move at a relaxed pace and still end the day somewhere breathtaking.

Others are longer, more demanding, and built for hikers who want to push further and sleep somewhere truly remote. And for those chasing a real backcountry challenge, there are expeditions that go deep into wilderness most people never reach.

Tap on any trip here, and it will clearly have its activity level and daily distances outlined, so you can find the right fit from the start—and trust that you’ll be appropriately challenged without ever being out of your depth.

The animals are part of the trip

Hiking America’s national parks means sharing the landscape with creatures most of the world only sees in documentaries. Grizzly bears fishing for salmon in Alaska. Bison herds crossing the road in Yellowstone. A black bear ambling through the Smokies at dusk. California condors riding thermals above the Grand Canyon’s south rim. Moose wading through Grand Teton lakes at first light.

This is wildlife in its fullest, most unfiltered sense—not in enclosures, not behind glass, but living out their lives in habitats that have barely changed in millennia. Having an experienced guide with you transforms these encounters from lucky accidents into informed, meaningful moments. They’ll know where to look, when to keep your distance, and what you’re actually witnessing when it happens. The wildlife alone is worth the trip. The hiking is the bonus.

The parks are bigger than any guidebook

America’s national parks are vast, complex, and—especially at peak season—logistically demanding in ways that catch first-timers off guard. Trail closures, permit lotteries, bear canisters, altitude acclimatization, wildlife protocol: the details matter out here, and they stack up fast.

Expert local guides cut through all of that. They know the parks not just from maps but from years of repeat visits. Beyond safety and navigation, they bring these landscapes to life through geology, ecology, and Indigenous history in a way no app or travel forum ever could. That depth of knowledge turns a great hike into an experience you carry with you long after the boots come off.

The logistics of US Parks are no joke

Hiking America’s national parks independently has become significantly more complex in recent years. Some required time entry reservations, some permits, some run a strict lottery, some need booking months in advance. And that’s before you factor in transport to remote trailheads, gear requirements for bear country, and the challenge of navigating multiple parks in one trip.

These guided adventures take all of that off your plate. Permits, reservations, transport between parks, accommodation, gear guidance, and daily logistics are arranged in advance by people who do this for a living. You show up, you hike, you sleep well, you do it again. The parks deserve your full attention—these trips make sure nothing gets in the way of that.

The Grand Canyon Challenge has been truly an amazing experience that I’ll remember for life! This is my first backpacking trip, and I’ve never carried a 30+lbs pack ever before. Looking back, I cannot believe I completed this challenge and can’t help but feeling so proud of myself. There so many things to remember for this trip – spectacular views, remote and rugged trails, awesome Team 4 Fab 5 members who supported me all the way through, and our guide who ensured my safety all along, cheered me up when I was pushing hard, and cooked awesome meals for all of us. I can’t wait to go out with TSX Challenge again for the next adventure!

Adventure was great. Classis Alaska experience. Exciting flights on small planes to get in and out of backcountry. And a wide variety of massive terrain features every day; tundra, river beds, and glacier travel. Jack is fantastic! We booked a 7 day backpacking trip in Alaska with Jack, and it was a great experience. All the logistics were seamless, and Jack\’s professionalism was outstanding guiding us through the Alaska backcountry. He greatly assisted us with pre-trip planning: gear selection, etc. And he customized the route and food to our preferences. Extremely well done from start to finish.

Frequently Asked Questions about hiking in US National Parks

  • Late spring (May–June) and early fall (September–October) are the sweet spots for most destinations—comfortable temperatures, trails in good condition, and summer crowds either not yet arrived or already thinned out.

Still, it all varies by park: Utah canyon country gets dangerously hot in summer; Alaska’s hiking window is June–August; the Smokies are stunning in October. Each trip includes clear seasonal guidance so you know exactly what to expect.

  • These are active trips, so a baseline level of fitness helps—but the range is wide. From gentle valley walks in Yosemite to demanding backcountry routes in Alaska, there’s a trip for everyone. Each trip clearly states its daily distances and elevation gain so you can find the right match. If you can comfortably walk several hours with a daypack and some elevation, you’ll be well-suited for most of the beginner-to-intermediate options.

  • Yes, every trip is led by a professional local guide with extensive knowledge of the specific park and terrain. These aren’t generalist tour leaders; they’re specialists who know their parks intimately—wildlife patterns, permit systems, trail conditions by season, and the hidden details that make a trip exceptional. They handle safety, navigation, and on-the-ground logistics, and they’re your best source for everything from wildlife identification to the geological history of what you’re standing on.

  • Some parks and specific trails do require permits, and the NPS has introduced timed entry systems for several high-demand destinations including Yosemite, Zion, and Acadia. Backcountry camping almost always requires a separate permit. The good news: when you travel with a guided tour, all of this is handled for you in advance. You don’t need to navigate the permit system yourself.
