I couldn’t imagine having a better experience than I did with CRST. The staff are so knowledgeable about all aspects of surfing, Samara and the surrounding area. Everything was so organized and the quality of our experience felt like it genuinely mattered to them. Jairo and Meg are there for you with any questions or concerns. Every day felt like a day in paradise. I will be back!!! 🙂

Costa Rica surf school gives an unparalleled experience in both learning the basics and progressing with your form. Our family of six ranged in experience age from 26 to 60. Each of us got up thanks to the patient instruction from people who truly wanted us to succeed. This is a small local business that deserves your support.

Frequently asked questions about Costa Rica tours

  • Costa Rica offers tons of exciting experiences for all sorts of travelers.

Hiking is a must, with trails through pristine national parks like Corcovado and Arenal Volcano, where you can encounter diverse wildlife and soak in natural hot springs.

For those drawn to the sea, surfing in Tamarindo and Nosara offers world-class breaks for all skill levels, with local schools ready to help novices catch their first wave.

White-water rafting on the Pacuare River provides an adrenaline rush amidst stunning scenery, where Class III and IV rapids await as you paddle through lush jungles.

Finally, ziplining through the canopy in Monteverde and Arenal delivers breathtaking views of the forest and its inhabitants, combining thrill with unparalleled beauty.

  • When planning a journey to the lush landscapes of Costa Rica, timing can significantly enhance your experience. The months you choose to visit can make all the difference.

The dry season, from December to April, is often hailed as the best time to explore. During these months, the weather is typically sunny with low humidity, which makes it ideal for enjoying the stunning beaches and biodiverse rainforests. This season also offers prime wildlife viewing, as sea turtles nest on the beaches and migratory birds flock to the region.

Conversely, the green season, from May to November, brings its own unique vibe. While this period sees more frequent rains, the landscape flourishes in vibrant hues, offering breathtaking backdrops for hikes and exploration. This is a time of fewer crowds and active wildlife, with swollen waterfalls creating stunning photo opportunities. Rain usually falls in the afternoons, allowing for sun-soaked mornings spent trekking or relaxing on the beach.

Ultimately, the best months to visit depend on your priorities. Whether you seek sun-soaked days or the raw beauty of lush landscapes, Costa Rica’s captivating charm and diverse ecosystems promise an unforgettable adventure year-round.

  • A well-rounded Costa Rica trip typically requires 10 to 14 days to fully immerse in the country’s diverse landscapes and vibrant culture. This timeframe allows travelers to explore both the Pacific and Caribbean coasts, starting in Arenal, where the iconic volcano offers hiking, hot springs, and thrilling activities like ziplining and white-water rafting.

A few days in the serene beaches of Tamarindo or Manuel Antonio provide opportunities for sunbathing, surfing, and snorkeling. For deeper exploration, extending the stay to two weeks enables visits to the Osa Peninsula or the cloud forests of Monteverde, known for their biodiversity.

While highlights can be experienced in as few as seven days, especially on well-planned guided tours, allocating 10 to 14 days allows for a more enriching journey.

  • Costa Rica is not the cheapest destination in Central America, but it offers options for various budgets, making it accessible for many travelers.

Accommodations range from luxurious eco-resorts to budget-friendly hostels, while dining options include everything from gourmet meals to affordable traditional casados at local sodas.

Activities reflect this diversity as well; some Costa Rica tour packages can be pricey, but numerous free or low-cost options exist, such as hiking in national parks and enjoying natural hot springs. Ultimately, Costa Rica strikes a balance between affordability and quality, allowing travelers to enjoy rich experiences without feeling overly constrained by their budget. With careful planning, you can explore this stunning country at a range of price points.

  • The rainiest month in Costa Rica is September, when the country experiences peak rainfall across both the Caribbean and Pacific regions. This month is marked by heavy afternoon downpours and increased humidity, transforming the landscape into a lush, vibrant paradise.

While September can pose challenges with muddy conditions that may limit access to some remote areas, it also offers advantages, including fewer crowds and a dramatic display of nature’s beauty as waterfalls swell and rainforests thrive. If you’re willing to embrace a little rain, this month provides a unique opportunity to experience Costa Rica’s rich biodiversity on more intimate excursions.

  • While Costa Rica is celebrated for its stunning landscapes and welcoming culture, you should keep a few considerations in mind for a safe and enjoyable journey.

Wildlife encounters can be thrilling yet potentially hazardous. From venomous snakes to sharp-beaked birds, caution is key when exploring natural areas. Wearing appropriate footwear and maintaining a respectful distance from animals will help mitigate risks.

The climate varies significantly across regions, with rainforests experiencing high humidity and sudden downpours, while higher elevations can be cool. Packing versatile clothing and waterproof gear is essential for adapting to changing conditions.

You should also be mindful of road conditions, especially in rural areas. While many roads are well-maintained, renting a 4×4 vehicle is often advisable for accessing remote destinations safely.

Lastly, while Costa Rica is generally safe, it’s wise to exercise standard precautions against petty crime, particularly in urban areas. Keep your valuables secure and stay aware of your surroundings for a worry-free adventure.
