I cannot tell you how much I enjoyed my Yosemite Grand Traverse trip. I saw Yosemite in such a way that will stay with me forever. The food, the guiding, the route and the views were all perfect! The best part of the trip was our guide Csuri Odry. She is by far in all my years of expeditions around the world, the finest guide I have ever had the privilege of learning from. She is a real gem and made the trip extremely fun, safe, memorable and one that I would recommend to anyone.

Just a quick note to say our trip in the Ansel Adams Wilderness with Gretchen was absolutely amazing—experience of a lifetime department! The itinerary was perfect, the equipment was great, food was awesome and Gretchen was completely amazing. Gretchen in particular made the trip really special, she connected with our girls so well and made everyone super comfortable. Happy to leave a review in the right place or tell you more, but as I jump back into the swirl of work I just wanted to say thanks for a really first-rate experience from start to finish.

We had an incredible experience with Lasting Adventures! It was our first visit to Yosemite and kicking off the trip with a guided hike was perfect. It was just our group of 4 (me, my husband, and 2 friends) which was great because we got to ask lots of questions and take the day at our preferred pace. Our guide, Michael, was absolutely wonderful – very welcoming and easy to get along with! He is so knowledgable about the park, its history, and the nature and wildlife. He came well-prepared with sunscreen, bug spray, and extra water and snacks for all. And he took a bunch of quality photos of our group! The hike included a great mix of epic sights from higher elevations, and provided us with a nice overview of Yosemite, as well as ideas for other hikes to do on our own during the rest of our trip. I highly recommend Lasting Adventures for your trip to Yosemite. We were blown away!

We were a group of 7 family members (ages 22-65 years old), for all of us was our first hiking/backpacking/camping experience. We all have such an amazing yet challenging experience, it was really worthy! Thank you so much to our guides Nicole and Jack for your cheers, your spirit, your cooking, your yoga time, your knowledge and for doing this family trip so great! We really enjoy it!!

Mara B

I chose the Hidden Yosemite trip and joined two other Washingtonians that I hike with regularly. What an incredible trip. First and foremost, our guides Will and Bella were awesome. They kept us well fed, educated on the history of Yosemite. Who knew that the white powder on an aspen tree could be used as sunscreen? They made the whole journey memorable. I can’t imagine a better way to experience this amazing place. A sincere thank you to Lasting Adventures and to Will and Bella!

Spent five nights last week on a Lasting Adventures trip in Yosemite. I couldn’t have dreamt of a better way to see the park. Our guide was amazing and was a wealth of knowledge on the geology, trees, and history of the park. Finished the trip with a summit of Half Dome on our last day. The only way to really get a scale of Yosemite is to spend a few days backpacking through the park. Amazing food, good company, and some of the best scenery on earth. I highly recommend going with the experts at Lasting Adventures as this is truly their backyard.

Recently finished a backpacking trip planned and guided by Lasting Adventures. This was my first trip to Yosemite and the trip far exceeded my expectations. The hiking was rigorous but the experience and the views were very much worth the effort. The tents, sleeping bags etc were all great quality and it was helpful to not have to tote our own stuff across country. Jenna Levy was our guide and she was terrific. She has a great personality and worked tirelessly to make our trip special. I have no reservation recommending Lasting Adventures to anyone interested in visiting Yosemite.

Completed the TSX Challenge 9/8-9/16. Wow. It is certainly worthy of being labelled “Challenge” but the views were greater. Our guide was exceptional; from his intimate knowledge of the trail, his logistical skills and people skills. I don’t think there will be any other guides who could measure up. You’re in good hands. The trail is not easy by any means; but you’re in wilderness that few people have gone. If you haven’t hiked in the Sierra Nevada this is an opportunity to experience a remote part of the range that you can’t get to by driving a vehicle or even with day hikes.

Jesse was a great guide on Adventure of Ten Lakes!! The trip was a refreshing disconnect! Jesse provided packing tips, prepared delicious meals, and knew so many great spots and views.

Lori M.

Steve, We so enjoyed our guided hike with you. You truly have a gift for bringing the nature, history and folklore of Big Sur to life. The hidden untrampled pockets you showed us and the entertaining and interesting stories made our time in Big Sur all the more magical.

I had very high hopes for this trip and they were more than exceeded! I’m a solidly “older” woman and had backpacked once prior about 30 years ago, so this was a bit of a leap. I did make sure to be in reasonably good physical shape to prepare (day hiking – some at altitude + strength/endurance training), but otherwise I had no idea what I was doing. From minute one, I was welcomed, coached, supported and guided into an unforgettable adventure. The route was fantastic – a ton of variation from lush forest to meadow to lake side to barren granite mountain tops with amazing views. Our camp sites were gorgeous, we swam in lakes almost daily and did some challenging hiking, both long and sometimes technical. And let’s not forget about the food! Biggest surprise of the trip was how delicious all the meals were! Challenge is the right word to describe this trip, because it is not easy. But it is an absolutely do-able challenge, especially with the team focus that TSX brings. And now I not only have amazing memories and pictures but I also have the confidence to go and do more backpacking and exploring. Can’t wait to do the next trip!

My nephew and I have been mainly climbing indoors and wanted to learn from a certified intructor on outdoor climbing. Our instructor Aaron was awesome and really tailored the class based on what we wanted to learn and at our level of climbing. We told him a little bit of our background and he selected a great area for us to climb and taught us skills that we were looking to get out of the class. Overall it was a great experience and I think courses can definitely benefit all levels of climbers. Already looking forward to taking another course next year. Thanks for teaching us proper and safe techniques and can’t wait to get outside on our own!

Casey Jordan

This was an incredible experience! I feel like we really got the best deal for the whole trip. We had salty, passionate, and knowledgeable guides give us as much information as possible in our Avalanche safety course. It honestly felt like we were being personally guided into their favorite spots in the backcountry and they were all truly passionate about the sport and all things outdoors. I highly recommend David, Caleb, and JB for your avalanche course or even just as your guides.

Rebecca Holstrom

Great Shasta summit experience with SWS! My family had a 5 person private climb with Kory and Jackson, and we couldn’t have asked for a better experience. One of our party had to turn around due to altitude sickness, so one guide ensured he made it to camp safely while the other made sure the rest of us got our boots on the summit! Summit aside (it’s optional, down safely is mandatory) the whole experience was educational, pushed us in all of the right ways, and one I’d love to do again!

David Petersen

Awesome experience backpacking to Half Dome with Jesse. He had everything ready to go and was an exceptional guide. Highly recommend you book your trip through Jesse and The Lamplighters Adventuring Society!

Nick Williams

I’ve gotten outside with Erik on two occasions. Both adventures were a complete blast and I learned a ton. Erik is safe, professional, and a damn good climber. If you’re in the Sacramento area and are looking to take your outdoor climbing to the next level, Vertical Pursuits is the way to go.

From registration to trip completion Lasting Adventures provided excellent service and truly a once in a lifetime experience. Thanks to our guide Trey for his professionalism, vast knowledge, hiking and cooking skills, flexibility, and adaptability. Trey’s back country experience allowed the group to experience and truly enjoy places and things we could not do on our own. Lasting Adventures did not cut any corners, the equipment and food were excellent! I highly recommend this guide service, they secured all the permits and communication was excellent. I can’t wait to go again!

I have summited some amazing peaks, but Mt. Whitney has stolen my heart.  From her diverse landscape, to the ever changing appearance of her face each hour of the day; she is a wild beauty not easily put out of your mind.  This Jersey girl hiked/climbed/scrambled-up/slid-down the Mountaineer’s Route, which was both physically and mentally challenging but, incredibly fulfilling.  My guide, Matt M., was confident, extremely knowledgeable and skilled, and I am pretty sure part mountain goat.  Best guide I have ever had, prettiest mountain I have ever been on; if you are considering this hike, I would say DO IT!

Brian S

Had a great day of climbing with Roger and Millena at Point Dume. Milena answered a bunch of questions prior to my booking and made me feel comfortable making the reservation. Roger is a good teacher and offered many tips on becoming a better climber. Looking forward to climbing again with them.

Kristin Forgrave

Sunny is such a wonderful leader! I have gone on two expeditions with AWE and both were fantastic. The small group was a lot of fun. Sunny encouraged and challenged us throughout the trek, and had a high level of awareness and flexibility that made our trip safe and successful even when obstacles came up. I would highly recommend Sunny and AWE.

Al Duke

Fun experience with multiple levels of climbing. Kyle was amazing, had a great time.

Cait Downey

Such thorough, safe planning! Real pros and really fun! Can’t recommend them highly enough!

Hands down the best, most reasonably priced guide co in Tahoe for Avy Courses and guided ski trips. Looking forward to taking Avy Rescue and AIARE 2 this winter!

Blackbird Mountain Guides is an amazing guide service! They tailor trips based on your individual preferences and abilities and are eager to help you develop new skill sets. The guides have extensive subject matter expertise and are extremely professional. I have done numerous climbs with Zeb specifically, including a recent trip a few weeks back – it was (as always) thoroughly enjoyable. There is a reason I keep coming back and climbing with Zeb – you always know you are in the best possible hands. Based on my past experiences, I am currently planning two more trips next year with Blackbird Mountain Guides. A top-notch company.

Fabi has done an awesome job of fostering and supporting new & experienced climbers with his guiding business. I have experience climbing but have been very cautious and always nervous. From the first day with Chillino in a group session, I felt comfortable and had a great time. In just a few community sessions and a field trip to Idyllwild I have gained more confidence in my climbing. Now, I get super stoked to go climbing rather than being over taken by fear and nervousness.

Fabi is friendly, technical and approachable. He does a great job of maximizing our time together by setting up multiple routes to climb and by talking through & teaching the technical details and theory of climbing.

Chillino has helped me love climbing even more.

Lindsay was super easy to work with ahead of our hike and provided all of the important details we needed for the excursion. At the hike, Lindsay was very friendly, knowledgeable, and a joy to be with for the afternoon. Our group had a great time with Lindsay!

We recently participated in back to back weekends in the Intro to Backcountry and AIARE level 1 courses. As total beginners to backcountry skiing, we both feel much more prepared to plan and execute a basic backcountry ski trip! There were participants in the AIARE course who weren’t new to backcountry, and they all seemed to also get a lot of the course too. Both instructors we had were well informed, managed time well, read the group dynamic very well, and were enthusiastic instructors who clearly love the mountains and want to share that love. It was also FUN – learning is always better when there is fun involved. One thing I had heard about the AIARE course is the last day is a full day backcountry tour – due to a variety of factors, most especially a crusty snow pack and my own ability, this wasn’t the case for our class. This was a disappointment, but also a good reality check about thinking what is actually possible given the conditions and group skill level. The office in Squaw is welcoming, with some cool folks who clearly are pretty stoked about what they do. They hooked us up with some high quality rental gear too, and were patient with me when I went through about 3 different boot sizes and ski exchanges. Overhearing some of the level 2 AIARE course work only inspired me to want to sign up for that course next year too, after getting some more experience. We enthusiastically recommend Alpenglow and would definitely return for another course in the future.

Signed up with SWS for a May attempt at Mt Shasta Avalanche Gulch, which ended in a successful summit. Our guide Eric was exceptional. I am convinced that without his expertise we would not have made it to the summit. He made several game time route decisions based on the weather that ended up being the right call. Will be using SWS again for future trips.

Belle J.

Absolutely loved working with Blackbird Mountain Guides. Zeb was an awesome guide, knowledgeable and experienced, would highly recommend!

Lynne Abbott

Nate of High Desert Guiding was truly amazing! Nate\’s decades of experience were obvious, and this helped me to learn so much more than I could have ever thought. Nate taught me to crack climb, slab climb and lead belay from the top of a mountain. I climbed higher than I ever imagined and learned to use a bunch of equipment that I had only seen in climbing stores. Nate was always a true professional having my safety first, so I could relax and climb my best.
Truly a 5 star experience!

Frequently Asked Questions About Adventures In & Around the Bay Area

  • Choosing the best & most scenic hike in the San Francisco Bay Area is a tough task, as there are too many to choose from. Here are some of our top picks:

    • Muir Woods National Monument: Hike among towering redwoods on various trails ranging from easy to moderate.
    • Tomales Point Trail: A moderate 6.1-mile trail through rolling hills and wildflowers, leading to stunning views of the Point Reyes National Seashore.
    • Lands End Trail: This moderate 3.4-mile round-trip trail traverses dramatic cliffs along the city’s western edge, offering stunning vistas of the Pacific Ocean, the Golden Gate Bridge, and the Marin Headlands, as well as potential encounters with sea lions & harbor seals.
    • Dipsea Trail: A challenging 6.8-mile trail with stunning ocean views and towering redwoods.
  • There are many spectacular hikes in Yosemite, but the most iconic & panoramic one has to be Half Dome via the Mist Trail.

This challenging 14-to-16-mile round-trip hike is an iconic Yosemite experience, offering stunning views of Yosemite Valley, waterfalls, and surrounding granite cliffs. Note that permits are required for the cables section leading to the summit.

  • Yes, beginners can definitely climb in Yosemite National Park, but with some important caveats.

First off, guided climbs are essential. Due to the unique climbing style, challenging terrain, and safety concerns, beginners are strongly recommended to climb with a qualified guide. Taking a beginner class is a fantastic option for learning the fundamentals and experiencing the thrill of climbing in a safe and controlled environment.

Also, the climbing in Yosemite is very specific. Yosemite climbing primarily involves cracks and slabs, unlike the varied holds typically found in gyms or some other climbing areas.

Also, The rock faces tend to be steeper and longer than typical beginner walls, requiring more endurance and mental strength.

Finally, Yosemite’s climbing grading system can be “sandbagged,” meaning some routes may feel harder than their designated difficulty due to the specific challenges mentioned above.

Keep all of this in mind and go with an expert guide, and your first Yosemite climbing adventure will go safely and smoothly.

  • Spring (March through May) and fall (September through November) are the best season for hiking in Joshua Tree.

They offer the most pleasant temperatures for hiking, with highs ranging from 70-85°F (21-29°C). Summers are scorching, reaching over 100°F (38°C), making strenuous hikes dangerous. Winter can be chilly, with occasional snow at higher elevations, but offers beautiful scenery and fewer crowds.

  • No, you don’t generally need a permit for climbing in Joshua Tree National Park as long as you’re sticking to established climbing routes and not engaging in specific activities that require permits.

However, if you plan to place new bolts (permanent anchors) or fix anchors, you do need a Bolting Permit. This applies to both established climbing areas and wilderness areas.

  • The best time of the year to hike in Big Sur depends on your priorities.

For pleasant weather and moderate crowds, choose spring (March-May). This is considered the shoulder season, offering comfortable temperatures, blooming wildflowers, and fewer crowds compared to the peak summer months.

For the best weather, choose late spring (June) and early fall (September-October). These months boast sunshine, warm temperatures, and minimal rain, making them ideal for enjoying the outdoors. However, these months also coincide with peak tourist season, so expect larger crowds and potentially higher prices.

For fewer crowds and wildlife watching, go in the fall (November-December). The crowds have thinned out significantly by this time, and the chance of rain increases. However, fall offers opportunities to witness migrating whales and elephant seals returning to the California coast.

  • Absolutely! Lake Tahoe is considered one of the premier skiing destinations in North America, and for good reason. Here are 4 reasons why:

    1. Diverse Terrain: With numerous resorts surrounding the lake, you’ll find a vast array of terrain catering to all skill levels, from gentle slopes for beginners to challenging steeps and glades for experienced skiers and snowboarders.
    2. Abundant Snowfall: The region receives an average of 480 inches of annual snowfall, ensuring a consistent and reliable snowpack throughout the winter season.
    3. Plenty of Sunshine: Despite receiving substantial snowfall, Lake Tahoe also boasts an average of nearly 300 days of sunshine annually. This translates to plenty of opportunities to enjoy bluebird days on the slopes.

Stunning Scenery: Skiing in Lake Tahoe means breathtaking views of the crystal-clear lake framed by the majestic Sierra Nevada mountains. The combination of snow-capped peaks and the deep blue lake creates a truly unforgettable experience.

  • While Mount Shasta isn’t technically impossible for beginners, it’s not recommended for those without proper preparation, training, and experience.

To start, Mount Shasta stands at 14,179 feet, making it a serious high-altitude climb. Beginners are more susceptible to altitude sickness, which can be very dangerous and even life-threatening.

Also, While some routes are considered non-technical, they still involve navigating snowfields, glaciers, and potentially steep inclines, requiring specific skills and equipment.

Finally, Climbing Mount Shasta is physically strenuous, demanding endurance, strength, and excellent cardiovascular fitness. Beginners might struggle with the long stretches of climbing and the thin air at high altitudes.

If you’re set on climbing Mount Shasta, strongly consider hiring a professional guide. They can provide essential training, equipment, and support to ensure a safe and successful summit attempt.
