A Spiritual Journey: Hiking the Camino de Santiago
Camino de Santiago is a sprawling 800-kilometer trail network that winds across the Iberian Peninsula, culminating at the sanctuary of Santiago de Compostela in Spain. Once traveled by kings and conquerors, then by pious pilgrims, it’s now revered by trekkers as one of the finest thru-hikes in Western Europe.
Every year, over 300,000 “peregrinos” tackle the 1,200-year-old trek on one of seven different routes. Some take to the coastal cliffs and vibrant villages of Northern Spain, others follow historic Roman vias and Moorish monuments, while others traverse the beaches and hills of Portugal. The network is a convoluted one, and untangling it alone feels like a leap of faith.
