The best routes to the roof of Kilimanjaro

Machame Route: Known as the “Whiskey Route,” Machame is the most popular path to Kilimanjaro’s summit. With varied landscapes and challenging terrain, it offers a more scenic and adventurous climb, perfect for those seeking a moderately tough trek with excellent acclimatization.

Lemosho Route: For trekkers wanting a quieter experience, the Lemosho Route delivers. Starting on the western side, it’s known for its lush forests and wide-ranging views. This longer route provides fantastic acclimatization and fewer crowds, ideal for those seeking a more remote and scenic journey.

Northern Circuit: The longest and least-traveled route, the Northern Circuit offers a unique, 360-degree experience around Kilimanjaro’s northern slopes. With the best acclimatization and breathtaking panoramas, it’s perfect for those who prefer a slower, more peaceful climb with unparalleled views.

I trekked Mt. Kilimanjaro with my dad for several days with this company, led by Abdala Huruvi, which was friendly, welcoming, and most of all, professional! He knew many facts about Mt Kili and the natural world. He also borrowed me and my dad some of his hiking clothes so we could climb on top of the mountain safely. The food they prepared during the trek was delicious and overall we had a great time spent with Abdala and his company!

I had an amazing time with Ekeney and her team. They took very good care of me the entire time I was in Tanzania. They ensured I was mentally ready for the hike and during the hike, pampered me, consoled me and encouraged me all the way to the summit.

I climbed Kilimanjaro with Ekeney for New year 2021 ! What an expedition, what an experience. It feels like we were sister going dancing macarena all the way to the top !! I highly recommend to make any trip with her. She is the African sun that will light up any excursion you will do.

If you are looking to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro I definitely recommend climbing with Eco-Africa. Kili had always been on my bucket list and Eco-Africa helped make that dream come true. We chose to do the 7-day Lemosho Trek and the experience truly exceeded expectations. From the time we arrived in Moshi until the day we left Eco-Africa made sure we were taken care of, even showing us around Moshi and eating at local spots. On the trek, the guides, chef & porters were all fantastic. Every meal was delicious (you will not be left hungry) and the chef even surprised my buddy with a cake on his birthday. Overall it was an unforgettable experience working with Frederick & the Eco Africa team. I highly recommend and look forward to reconnecting one day in the future

Frequently asked questions about our Kilimanjaro tours

  • Beginners can climb Kilimanjaro!

While it’s a challenging trek due to the altitude and the challenges that come with every multi-day hike, trekking Kilimanjaro doesn’t require any technical climbing skills. With proper preparation, a good level of fitness, and good route choice (choose one that allows for gradual acclimatization) even first-time trekkers can successfully reach the summit. The key is to take it slow, stay hydrated, and listen to your body. In fact, many beginners have done the climb with great success!

  • No, you don’t need any technical climbing experience to summit Kilimanjaro.

The trek is non-technical, meaning there’s no need for ropes, special equipment, or advanced mountaineering skills. While it’s a physically demanding trek due to the altitude and some challenging terrain, it is still just a long hike. As such, it requires stamina, good fitness, and proper acclimatization rather than technical expertise.

  • For successfully trekking Kilimanjaro, you will need endurance, strength, and mental stamina. Here are some tips on how to prepare:

    1. Regular hikes on uneven terrain are essential to simulate the Kilimanjaro experience. Start with shorter hikes and gradually increase distance and elevation gain.
    2. Cardio activities like running, cycling, or swimming help improve cardiovascular fitness, which is key for long hours of walking.
    3. Do some strength training with a focus on leg strength (squats, lunges) and core stability to handle the physical demands of the trek.
    4. If possible, hike at higher altitudes or use altitude training masks to acclimate your body to lower oxygen levels.
    5. Incorporate long-distance walks with a loaded backpack to get used to carrying gear for extended periods.
  • The best months to plan your Kilimanjaro trip are during the dry seasons: January to mid-March and June to October. These periods offer more stable weather, clearer skies, and better trail conditions.

From January to mid-March, the weather is generally warm, with fewer crowds, making it a great time to climb. Some rain is possible, but the views are often spectacular. June to October, on the other hand, is the most popular time for climbers due to the cooler, drier conditions and stunning vistas. However, trails may be busier during these months.

We recommend avoiding the heavy rains of April, May, and November.

  • Climbing Kilimanjaro typically takes 5 to 9 days, depending on the route and your acclimatization needs.

For the best chance of summiting successfully and safely, most trekkers choose a 7-9-day itinerary, which allows for proper acclimatization and reduces the risk of altitude sickness.
5-6 day express itineraries are possible, but increase the difficulty and risk due to less time for acclimatization. Longer routes, such as the Northern Circuit, offer a more gradual ascent, making them ideal for maximizing summit success.
