Best surf spots in Costa Rica

Tamarindo: A must-visit for surfers of all levels, with consistent waves, warm water, and a vibrant surf town atmosphere. Its famous right-hand point break is ideal for intermediate and advanced surfers, while the beach break offers plenty of room for beginners to practice.

Nosara: Known for its laid-back vibe and pristine beaches. The surf here is incredibly consistent, so it’s a favorite for both beginners and seasoned riders who love its clean, glassy waves, particularly at Playa Guiones.

Playa Grande: Located just north of Tamarindo, Playa Grande is famous for its powerful beach break and hollow barrels. A perfect pick for more experienced surfers chasing fast, steep rides.

I couldn’t imagine having a better experience than I did with CRST. The staff are so knowledgeable about all aspects of surfing, Samara and the surrounding area. Everything was so organized and the quality of our experience felt like it genuinely mattered to them. Jairo and Meg are there for you with any questions or concerns. Every day felt like a day in paradise. I will be back!!! 🙂

Frequently asked questions about surf camps in Costa Rica

  • When it comes to surfing in Costa Rica, the time of year can shape your entire experience, but the good news is: there’s never really a bad time to go.

The dry season, from December to April, offers warm weather, clear skies, and steady offshore winds, particularly along the Pacific coast. This is when places like Tamarindo and Nosara really shine, with consistent, clean waves perfect for all skill levels.

But if you’re chasing bigger, more powerful swells, May through October, the rainy season, is when Costa Rica delivers. The southern swells light up breaks like Playa Hermosa and Pavones, serving up more size and juice. Sure, you might get the occasional afternoon shower, but with it comes fewer crowds and some of the best waves of the year.

For the hardcore surf traveler, September and October are a hidden gem, with pumping waves and uncrowded lineups – just as long as you’re ready for the tropical weather. Whether you’re after mellow rides or epic swells, Costa Rica’s waves are ready year-round.

  • The Pacific coast is hands down the best for surfing in Costa Rica. Stretching from Guanacaste to the Osa Peninsula, it delivers consistent swells year-round, epic point breaks, and a laid-back surf vibe. From the famous breaks of Tamarindo and Nosara to the legendary left-hand point at Pavones, this side offers something for every surfer.

While the Caribbean has its moments—like the heavy waves of Salsa Brava—the Pacific wins for variety, accessibility, and consistent surf culture. If you’re chasing waves, this is the coast to be on.

  • If you’re heading to Costa Rica for a surf trip, where you fly into depends on which waves you’re chasing.

For the Pacific coast, where most of the action is, Daniel Oduber International Airport (LIR), also known as Liberia International Airport is your best bet. It’s just a short drive from Tamarindo, Nosara, and Playa Grande, putting you right in the heart of some of the country’s best surf spots. Plus, you’ll avoid the hustle of San José, saving precious hours you’d rather spend in the water.

That said, if you’re aiming for the southern Pacific breaks like Pavones or Dominical, or if you’re planning a multi-destination trip, San José’s Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO) offers more flexibility. It’s a longer haul to the coast, but still a solid option, especially if you’re willing to catch a quick domestic flight or drive through Costa Rica’s awesome landscapes.

If the Caribbean coast and the heavy waves of Salsa Brava are calling, SJO is also your gateway, followed by a few hours’ drive to Puerto Viejo. No matter where you fly into, Costa Rica’s waves are well worth the journey.

  • If you’re looking to learn how to surf in Costa Rica, you’re in one of the best places on the planet to do it

The Pacific coast is where most beginners start, and Tamarindo is often the first stop for surf lessons. This laid-back surf town offers consistent, gentle waves and plenty of surf schools and family surf camps catering to first-timers like you. The sandy bottom and warm water make it an ideal spot to get comfortable on a board.

For a more tranquil experience, head to Nosara, specifically Playa Guiones, where the waves are forgiving and the vibe is relaxed. It’s a quieter, less crowded alternative with great conditions for beginners year-round. Another standout is Santa Teresa, a bit further south, offering soft beach breaks and a more rustic, jungle-infused surf experience.

If you’re after a truly off-the-beaten-path experience, Playa Cocles on the Caribbean coast is a solid option. While it can get a bit punchier, there are stretches that are perfect for newcomers. Wherever you choose, Costa Rica’s friendly locals, warm water, and beginner-friendly beaches make learning to surf an absolute pleasure.

  • Your Costa Rica surf retreat can be as expensive or as affordable as you make it. For surfers, there’s a broad range of options depending on your travel style. In surf hubs like Tamarindo and Santa Teresa, you’ll find high-end beachfront hotels, gourmet restaurants, and stylish cafes catering to a more upscale crowd. But if you know where to look, you can still score budget-friendly accommodations, local sodas (family-run eateries), and cheap eats without sacrificing too much comfort.

Hostels, surf camps, and guesthouses are plentiful in towns like Nosara and Dominical, offering clean, simple lodging steps from the beach without breaking the bank. Prices rise during the high season (December to April), so if you’re flexible, visiting during the rainy season can mean lower rates and fewer crowds. Overall, Costa Rica isn’t the bargain it once was, but with a little savvy planning, you can still enjoy the Pura Vida life without draining your wallet.
