Hawke’s Bay Bike Tour in New Zealand: Ride, Wine & Art Deco

How about this: On New Zealand’s North Island, we’ll take you on a 5-day adventure where biking’s just the beginning. Apart from lush valleys and stunning back roads, we’ll taste the wines from this area and discover Napier’s fascinating Art Deco architecture. Along the way, we’ll hang out at cozy motels and stay at a historic homestead with enough character to tell its own stories. But that’s not all—think charming towns, amazing food, and more vineyards than you can shake a cork at. And just when you think you’ve seen it all, we’ll top it off with a visit to Te Mata Peak for views worth every pedal stroke. Sounds good? The roads are ready, and the wine is waiting. Let’s go!

Adventure highlights

  • The Grape Escape
It’d be a crime riding through wine regions without sampling the wine, so we’ll be doing a wine tasting at a boutique winery
  • History meets luxury
Stay at Wallingford Homestead, built in 1858, now an exquisite retreat described as “possibly the most welcoming place in the world”
  • Oh, the places you’ll go!
Ride to beautiful Central Hawke’s Bay beaches and alongside the stunning Tukituki and Tukaekuri rivers

Itinerary

Get ready to pedal through New Zealand’s best-kept secrets on a 5-day ride that’s more than just a bike trip. We’ll cruise through Crownthorpe’s farmland, explore Napier’s Art Deco charm, then pedal along riverside trails and past waterfalls and golden beaches. From there, it’s all about remote backcountry and a delightful stay at a historic homestead. Finally, we’ll take in sweeping views from Te Mata Peak before returning to Napier. With comfy accommodations, gourmet meals, a wine tasting, and a mix of relaxed and rewarding rides, this adventure is an unforgettable way to experience New Zealand. Ready to roll?

  • Welcome to Aotearoa New Zealand and your Hawke’s Bay Adventure! We’ll meet in the morning at a central location in Napier and start with a short briefing before heading inland to the rural Crownthorpe community. We’ll cycle through a stunning landscape of rolling limestone hills and vineyards, farmland, and orchards, all with views of the braided Ngaruroro River. We’ll stop for lunch at Hawke’s Bay’s only earth brick winery, where we’ll enjoy handcrafted wines in a rammed earth building. After our ride, we’ll transfer to Marine Parade in Napier and settle into our accommodation along the iconic seafront that connects the Art Deco city with the Pacific Ocean.

  • On a February morning in 1931, Napier was all but destroyed in New Zealand’s deadliest earthquake. When the city was rebuilt, Art Deco was all the fashion. Today Napier boasts one of the finest concentrations of Art Deco style anywhere in the world. After breakfast, we’ll enjoy a guided walk around this remarkable city with a professionally trained Art Deco Trust guide. Then we join the Hawke’s Bay cycle trail network, riding on smooth limesand surfaces through the Heretaunga Plains. The limesand surface is wide, smooth and mostly flat, perfect for enjoying the region’s mini Mediterranean climate.

The first stretch of our route follows the Tukaekuri River to the coast. We’ll enter the Waitangi Regional Park, a sanctuary for breeding birds and home to the impressive Star Compass. Following the coast, we then pick up the Tukituki River and ride through idyllic rural and riverside scenery. There are shorter and longer hillier ride options, but both take us beside the majestic Te Mata Peak and finish at our accommodation in Havelock North.

    Meals: Breakfast and lunch
Biking options: 40 km (24.9 miles) or 53 km (32.9 miles)
    Elevation options:+181 m (+594 ft) or +617 m (+2,024 ft)
    Terrain: Easy unpaved cycle trails
    Accommodation: Motel in Havelock North

  • Today we embark on a local favorite route to Waimarama’s golden beaches. Starting from Havelock, our journey takes us past award-winning vineyards, the limestone crags of Te Mata and Te Hau, and across the Tukituki River. We’ll continue past Lake Lopez, a water-bird haven, and the scenic Maraetotara Falls. The route continues past Te Aratipi Station, the site of at least two historic Maori battles, before we head to Matanginui Viewpoint for stunning views overlooking the Pacific Ocean and Bare Island.

We’ll detour to the beautiful surfing beach and park-like Domain before looping back to the settlement of Waimarama and the Tukituki River. In the evening, we’ll enjoy a group dinner in the delightful village of Havelock North.

    Meals: Breakfast and dinner
Biking options: 60 km (37.3 miles) or 69 km (42.9 miles)
    Elevation: +915 m (+3,002 ft) or +1,022 m (+3,353 ft)

    Accommodation: Motel in Havelock North

Tukituki Valley and Te Mata Peak in the distance
  • We venture into Southern Hawke’s Bay’s network of quiet back-country roads, heading toward the stunning East Coast. Our route runs through quintessential rural New Zealand on sealed and gravel roads, giving us a remote feel with scattered farms and settlements. We finish our standard ride at Te Paerahi Beach, a vast golden beach sheltered by large headlands at both ends.

There’s an optional extra ride to our night’s accommodation at the historic Wallingford Homestead, a former 34,000-acre (13,750-hectare) station transformed into a boutique lodge.

    Meals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner
Biking options: 57 km (35.4 miles) or 78 km (48.5 miles)
    Elevation options: +570 m (+1,870 ft) or +800 m (+2,625 ft)
Terrain: Mix of paved roads and easy gravel (20-28% gravel)
    Accommodation: Wallingford Homestead

  • We complete our Hawke’s Bay adventure riding across rolling limestone hills alongside the Tukituki River, making our way to Te Mata Peak. Steeped in Maori legend, the Peak is both a visual feast and an integral part of Hawke’s Bay’s history. We’ll head up to its summit by pedal power or motor and enjoy a picnic lunch at the peak’s summit with 360-degree views of the region we’ve explored.

After lunch, we’ll transfer in the van back to central Napier where our journey concludes. Depending on your plans, you’ll either be dropped off in the town center or at the airport (please book departure flights no earlier than 5pm).

    Meals: Breakfast and lunch
Biking options: 47 km (29.2 miles) or 52 km (32.3 miles)
