Thailand Heritage Cycling Tour: Bangkok to Chiang Mai

7 days | Easy to Moderate | 5.00

This ride packs more Thai history into a week than most people see in a month. Over 7 days from Bangkok to Chiang Mai, we follow routes once used by the kingdom builders themselves: brick stupas rising out of rice paddies, a stone Buddha head swallowed by banyan roots, and teak mansions from the trading days. We cycle from Ayutthaya’s toppled capital through Sukhothai’s ancient ruins and into Lanna’s jungle hills, finishing at a mountaintop temple over Chiang Mai. Along the way: river crossings, morning markets, and some of the best regional cooking in the country. It’s a cyclist’s way into a side of Thailand most visitors only read about.

Adventure Highlights

  • Easy pace, big rewards: Flat, well-paced riding (about 46 km / 29 mi a day on average) leaves plenty of time for markets, temples, and local life along the way
  • Riding through a lost capital: Sukhothai Historical Park’s paved, traffic-free paths let you cycle past the brick stupas and reflecting ponds of Thailand’s first kingdom, rather than just view them from a bus window
  • Thai food all day long: Ride straight into riverside markets for fresh-caught fish and just-picked produce, then spend a free evening grazing Phrae’s night market on your own terms

The adventure, day by day

This 7-day, 6-night guided cycling tour rides from Bangkok to Chiang Mai through the heart of Thailand's history. Over 278 km (173 mi) of gentle, mostly flat terrain, we pass through the UNESCO World Heritage ruins of Ayutthaya and Sukhothai, rural rice-paddy villages, teak-trade towns, and temple-studded hill country before finishing beneath Chiang Mai's Doi Suthep. Local guides lead every ride, with a support vehicle following along and hybrid bikes—e-bike upgrade available—provided for the whole trip. Six nights are spent in character-rich, cosy hotels, with most meals included along the way. It's a comfortable, culture-heavy introduction to central and northern Thailand by bike.

Day 1: Riding from Bang Pa-In Palace into Ayutthaya
bang pa in palace

We start with a transfer from Bangkok to Bang Pa-In Palace, a former royal summer retreat blending traditional Thai architecture with Chinese and European influences. From there, we cross the Chao Phraya River by ferry and ride through riverside villages where Buddhist and Muslim communities live side by side. By the 20 km mark, we reach Ayutthaya, Thailand’s former capital and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, largely destroyed in a war with Burma in the late 18th century. We weave through the ruins by bike, visiting Wat Mahathat—famous for its Buddha head entwined in tree roots—the three stupas of Wat Si Sanphet, and the grand Wat Chaiwatthanaram.

Meals: Lunch, dinner
Cycling: 41 km (25 mi)
Elevation: +92 m (+302 ft) / -89 m (-292 ft)
Accommodation: Pludhaya Resort, a boutique resort set among rice paddies near Ayutthaya

Day 2: Rice paddies and river villages to Wat Chaiyo

Leaving Ayutthaya—built on an artificial island between two rivers—we ride through rice paddies, canals, and villages on quiet secondary roads, then along the main road into Ang Thong before picking up a narrow lane that hugs the Chao Phraya for a stretch of riverside life in Thailand’s Central Plains. The ride ends at Wat Chaiyo, home to a colossal gilded Buddha statue. From there, a short transfer carries us to a lakeside resort in Uthai Thani, where we spend the night.

sukhothai kingdom

The day begins early with a ride to Uthai Thani’s morning market, a vintage riverside town known for its stalls of fresh fish, produce, and local curiosities. We continue along the Chao Phraya, stopping at a local knife-making workshop, before riding through the countryside toward Kamphaeng Phet. After 45 km, we transfer by van toward Sukhothai, breaking the journey with a stop at Kamphaeng Phet’s ruined military outpost, once built to protect the kingdom from invasion, before arriving at our hotel in the late afternoon.

Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner

This morning is spent riding through Sukhothai Historical Park, capital of Thailand’s first kingdom and one of the country’s premier UNESCO World Heritage Sites, whose legacy still shapes Thai culture, language, and religion today. Well-paved, lightly trafficked roads connect temple ruins, fortifications, moats, and ponds, with stops at Wat Si Chum and Wat Mahathat, Sukhothai’s royal temple with its towering brick stupas. In the afternoon, we transfer to Phrae, a town built on the old teak trade, with time to visit a restored 19th-century teak mansion. Dinner isn’t included tonight, leaving you free to explore Phrae’s night market.

We ride through Lamphun province, Thailand’s top producer of longan fruit, passing orchards on the way to the moated old town and Wat Phra That Hariphunchai, one of the oldest continuously worshipped Buddhist temples in northern Thailand. From there, the route follows the Ping River floodplain to Wiang Kum Kam, the ruins of a city that predates Chiang Mai, before finishing at a riverside hotel just outside town. In the evening, we head out for dinner aboard one of Chiang Mai’s red trucks, stopping along the way to take in the city at dusk.

From there, we descend to Wat Umong, a 700-year-old forest temple built around tunnels once meant to keep a restless monk from wandering off. A farewell lunch wraps up the tour before transfers to onward hotels or the airport.

Wonderful combination of interesting and varied terrain, great guides and drivers, and excellent fellow cyclists. Very much enjoyed the many temples, and the thorough introduction to Thai food. We couldn’t have looked after better by Mr. Korn and Mr. Yo, our guides.

We have done a number of “out of the way” tours with other operators. This tour was very good, at least as good as any we have done. Guides were interesting, rivers were terrific and fun; everything was pretty much as promised. Culturally sensitive. Food was plentiful and tasty. Snacks were often, lots of water – an essential here! Accommodation was odd/good to superb. (Not all rural towns support superb!) Would recommend to anyone able to cycle in warm humid. (not that hard!)

  • The riding on this Thailand cycling tour is predominantly flat, with a few inclines along the way but no sustained climbs. Daily distances average around 46 km (29 mi), leaving plenty of time for sightseeing and rest along the route. Expect a mix of surfaces—mostly smooth tarmac, with stretches of narrow village lanes, bumpy country roads, and the odd section of hard-packed dirt or gravel. None of it is technical, but it does call for some basic bike handling.

Most of the route runs along quiet countryside roads with light traffic, though you’ll share the road with cars, motorbikes, and buses on a few unavoidable stretches near cities and popular attractions. Rides generally go ahead rain or shine, with your guide adjusting the route as needed for safety or comfort. The biggest challenge is less the terrain than keeping up stamina over back-to-back riding days in Thailand’s tropical heat—the pace is leisurely, with frequent refreshment stops, and a support vehicle is always nearby for anyone who needs a break.

  • Here’s a list of the equipment you need to bring:

      • Day pack large enough for a water bottle, camera, and daily essentials

      • Reusable water bottle (2L capacity)
      • Lightweight rain jacket
      • Sunhat and high-SPF sunscreen
      • Sunglasses
      • Toiletries (sunscreen, hand sanitizer, insect repellent, tissues, etc.)
      • Casual evening clothes
      • Camera — optional (but recommended)

Dress comfortably and for the weather in clothes you can move in. We suggest bringing clothing appropriate for the season. Layers are best and don’t wear jeans.
