  • Today’s the real start of our trip. You may have to wake up early for a drive to the airport to catch your flight to Lukla. Flying into the famous Tenzin Hillary airport is a thrilling experience in itself. You’ll see a small airstrip sprawled out in front of you as you approach. Lukla is fascinating—while walking through its bustling streets, you can smell the incense in the air, and some really good coffee, and see yaks and donkeys. As soon as we exit Lukla, it’s a whole different place. We’ll pass prayer wheels and lush green forests, and cross a big suspension bridge just before we reach the Phakding village (at 8,563 feet / 2,610 meters). Take time to explore the village or relax in the common room.

  • Make sure you get a good hearty breakfast—we have a big day ahead of us today. The trail to Namche Bazaar is one of the most iconic and strenuous ones on the trip. We’ll pass a checkpoint at Monjo where we’ll enter the Sagarmatha National Park. We’ll cross the Dudh Koshi river, by far the world’s highest, and stop for lunch at Jorsalle. Enjoy lunch beside the rapid water. We’ll walk through pine forests where we may get a glimpse of Mt. Thamserku (6,608 m), if the weather permits. Once we reach the clearing on the top of the hill, we’ll be able to see the gateway to Everest. Namche Bazaar is a horseshoe-shaped town which is right in front of the Kongde Ri peak. Settle into your room and enjoy the view.

  • As we gain altitude, it’s important to take time to adjust and prevent altitude sickness. So, we will have an acclimatization day at Namche. This village has a lot to offer, from souvenir shops to cafes and bars. You can choose to rest and explore the village or hike up to the Everest View Hotel which is an hour away and enjoy the panoramic Himalayan view. There is also a Sherpa museum and some Buddhist monasteries in the area, if you are up for it.

  • After a good night’s rest, we’ll have breakfast and walk towards Tengboche. On the way up, we’ll see street vendors with handmade jewelry and home décor items. You can stop for a tea break and shop for souvenirs. It’s hard not to feel the spirituality of the area, as we cross over silent flowing streams over wooden bridges. We’ll get chances to see some wild animals such as monkeys and musk deer.

  • After breakfast, we’ll hike towards Dingboche. It’s a very pleasant trail with great mountain views all the way up. Depending on the time of the year, you might see rhododendrons, Nepal’s national flower, in pink, white, and red. If we’re lucky, we may also spot danphe, Nepal’s national bird, adorned with multicolored feathers. This is a perfect trail to take pictures and to charge your solar batteries. Our lunch destination is Somare. The village is decorated with prayer flags. There are old houses and delicately painted prayer wheels. As you move towards Dingboche, the terrain becomes increasingly barren as you ascend above the tree lines. The houses are made of stones and wood with stonewall fences. The tea houses are usually family owned. You can enjoy some warm soup and popcorn near the heater and interact with the locals.

  • There are several things you could do today. You can climb up to the Nangkartshang hill or hike up to the ridge overlooking the village, with an excellent view of the mountains and the valley. If you are feeling up for it, you can hike up to the Chukhung Village. From both the ridge and Chukhung, you’ll be able to see Makalu, the fifth highest peak in the world, as well as Cholatse, Island Peak, Baruntse, and more. For those who want to rest and acclimatize, you can go on a village tour and enjoy the rest of the day sunbathing. There is an amazing café nearby and you can treat yourself to some delicious food.

  • After a proper Sherpa breakfast, we’ll start the day. We’ll climb up a hill and move up the Thukla ridge and onto the moraine, towards the Khumbu Glacier. Down the valley, you can see a small village of Pheriche. As you gain altitude, it’s important that you walk slow and steady. Thukla is our lunch stop for the day. Basking under the warm sun, you will refuel your body with food and drinks. Right after lunch, there is a 200 meter climb, but it will feel like it is much more than that. The trail is full of rocks and boulders and there are yaks and donkeys around. We’ll take our time and walk comfortably. On top of the hill lies the Everest Memorial Ground, the highest graveyard in the world. The place is full of chortens built in memory of people who lost their lives on Everest. We’ll rest and look around a bit. Our destination for the day is Lobuche. Getting there alone is a feat so, once there, we will eat and rest for the day.

  • Today, we’ll have an early start. It’s a short day in terms of the walking hours but with the altitude, it is going to be a challenge. We’ll start our walk to Gorakshep, where we will drop our bags off and have lunch. After lunch, those of us who feel like going to the Everest Base Camp will head out. (Those who want to stay at the lodge and acclimatize can enjoy the wonderful view just outside the doorstep.) On the way to the Base Camp, we’ll continue along the side of the Khumbu Glacier. After walking for an hour, we will step on to the glacier itself. In the spring season, the base camp will look like scattered flowers in a garden; climbing tents in red, blue and orange. When we get there, we can take turns taking pictures of each other. This is what we are here for! Sure, it was tiring at times, but you have finally made it. We’ll have a small celebratory party with drinks and snacks. And then, we’ll slowly return to Gorakshep. The return trip takes about two hours.

  • Another early start. After some warm drinks, we will head towards the Kala Pattar to catch the sunrise view. We’ll need to stock up on some sugar bars and snacks. Keeping the altitude in mind, the hike to Kala Pattar is not an easy one. But no worries. We’ll take breaks and look out for each other. Kala Pattar, translated to Nepali, means “black rock” and it lives up to its name. It is draped with colorful prayer flags and khadas, religious silk scarves. The view from the top is absolutely spectacular. You’ll be standing so close to the mountains, you’ll feel you could almost touch them. We’ll enjoy the 360-degree views of Himalayan giants like Khumbutse, Changtse and Lhotse, with Everest peeking over the shoulders of other mountains. You can also see the Everest Base Camp and an icy glacial lake down below.

Recent hiking and/or backpacking experience is highly recommended, as is excellent physical condition—you’ll be hiking for 2 weeks, 3-9 hours per day. During your trekking days, there will be some steeper and more challenging ascents along the way. There will be less arduous days reserved for acclimatization and rest. (Please note: hiking times in the itinerary are estimations; the actual hiking can take more or less time than noted.)

You will need to prepare for a cardio workout and consult with your doctor before joining the trip given the high altitude reaching up to almost 6,000 m / 20,000 ft. You will be required to familiarize yourself with the hazards and risks of high-altitude trekking, and sign a liability waiver and terms & conditions forms. However, this is a supported trek; hence, you only carry a daypack with your essentials (porters are hired to carry your belongings). You will be staying in teahouses each night.
