This was a highlight of our trip! Nejc planned an amazing ride for us and was so kind, flexible, and communicative. This is a great way to see Slovenia and the route is through very well-kempt gravel roads with minimal cars so it felt very safe. He gave great recommendations for dining and points of interest along the way.

Najc made us feel very welcomed to his country Slovenia. We experienced and learned the Slovenia culture while biking and hiking through the country. We were treated as family everywhere we went. The accommodations, hand picked by Nejc, were excellent. I would strongly recommend Hour Away Bike Tours to anyone who is traveling to Slovenia wanting to experience the country through the outdoors!!

Frequently asked questions about our active holidays in Slovenia

  • Slovenia is this little adventure-packed gem tucked right between Italy, Austria, Hungary, and Croatia.

It’s basically where the Alps, the Mediterranean, and the Balkans all collide, which means you get wild mountains, crystal-clear rivers, rolling vineyards, and even a slice of coastline—all in a country smaller than most U.S. states.

The best part? It’s way less crowded than its famous neighbors, so you get those epic Alpine peaks, legendary cycling routes, and insane kayaking rivers without the tourist mobs. Whether you’re climbing Triglav, biking through the Julian Alps, or sipping wine in a tiny hilltop village, Slovenia somehow manages to feel both off-the-radar and packed with adventure for active holidays. It’s one of those places where you can do everything—you just have to decide what to send first.

  • Slovenia is packed with things to do if you’re into active adventures—epic mountains, insane landscapes, and just enough off-the-radar vibes to keep things feeling wild. If you’re heading there, here are five must-dos:

    1) Climb Mount Triglav – If you’re up for a challenge, Triglav (9,396 ft) is the big one. It’s got everything—ridge scrambling, jaw-dropping views, and a legit sense of accomplishment when you hit the summit. Just know that locals have a tradition of giving first-timers a little “baptism” up there… you’ll see.

    2) Cycle through the Julian Alps – Whether you’re into scenic valley rides or grinding up big climbs, this is cycling heaven. The roads are smooth, the views are next-level, and you’ll hit spots most people never see. Bonus: You can mix in some gravel routes if you’re feeling adventurous.

    3) Kayak the Soča River – This river is unreal—bright turquoise water, steep canyon walls, and some super fun rapids if you want to spice things up. Even if you just float through the calm sections, it’s one of the most beautiful places you’ll ever paddle.

    4) Hike & wine taste in the countryside – If you need a break from the high-adrenaline stuff, hike through rolling vineyards, stop at tiny farmhouses, and sip some of the best (and most underrated) wine in Europe. Pair it with homemade cheese and fresh-baked bread, and you’ve got the perfect slow day.

    5) Take a chill day at Lake Bled – Sure, it’s famous, but it’s famous for a reason. Reserve a part of your holidays for Lake Bled; rent a paddleboard, hike up to a castle, or just sit by the lake and eat way too much kremšnita (Bled’s famous cream cake). If you want fewer crowds, head over to nearby Lake Bohinj—just as stunning, way quieter.

Honestly, Slovenia has so much packed into such a small country, perfect for an active holiday. You can be climbing mountains one day, kayaking through gorges the next, and sipping wine in the countryside by evening. Just get out there and explore—it won’t disappoint.

  • The best time for trips to Slovenia? Depends on what kind of active holiday you’re after!

Summer (June–September) – Peak season for hiking, biking, and all things outdoors. The weather’s warm, the trails are in prime condition, and the rivers (like the Soča) are perfect for kayaking. Just expect more people, especially around Lake Bled and Triglav National Park. If you want long days in the mountains, this is your time.

Fall (September–November) – Absolute golden season for hiking and cycling. The little crowds there are thin out, the forests explode with autumn colors, and the weather is still solid—just cooler, which is actually perfect for long days on the trail. Plus, it’s harvest season, so if you’re into wine and local food, this is when Slovenia really shows off.

Winter (December–March) – If you’re into skiing, Slovenia has some underrated spots, especially around Kranjska Gora and Vogel. Plus, the Julian Alps get coated in snow, making for some unreal winter hikes and ski touring. And if you’re more about cozy vibes, the mountain huts and villages feel like something out of a snow globe.

Spring (April–June) – A total wildcard. The lower valleys turn lush and green, and it’s an awesome time for cycling and wine country hikes. Higher up, some trails might still have snow, but that’s what makes it cool—you can hike in a T-shirt one day and be snowshoeing the next. Rivers are also at their most powerful, so if you’re into whitewater kayaking or canyoning, this is when the action is big.

Honestly, Slovenia’s got something rad happening year-round.

  • Slovenian (or slovenščina) is the official language, and it’s got some wild Slavic roots—lots of funky letters like č, š, and ž.

But here’s the thing: almost everyone speaks excellent English, especially if you’re in cities, tourist areas, or out adventuring with local guides.

If you want to earn some extra smiles, learn a couple of basic words—hvala (thank you) and živjo (hi) go a long way. But really, you’ll have zero trouble communicating. Whether you’re ordering a post-hike beer, asking for trail directions, or chatting with locals about the best secret spots, you’ll get by just fine.

  • Yeah, Slovenia is seriously one of the safest places you could spend your holidays in. It’s got that chill, welcoming vibe where people are friendly, crime is super low, and even in the mountains, the trails are well-marked and well-maintained. You can wander through tiny villages, take solo hikes, or bike remote alpine roads without worrying—it just feels easy to travel here.

Of course, if you’re heading into the backcountry or tackling something big like Triglav, you still need to respect the mountains, check the weather, and know what you’re doing (or go with someone who does). But overall? Slovenia is the kind of place where you can focus on the adventure, not on watching your back.
