What do people think of Hiking & Walking Holidays in the Canary Islands?
René Louman

This is the second time I have been out with Canary Hiking. Once again well organised. Fantastic locations to stay overnight. I’m going again in March.

Jelena Casier

We did the GR 131 in Gran Canaria. We are very pleased that we chose Canary Hiking to book this trip. Everything was very well organised, luggage transport went without any problems. Jeanne is always easily accessible for questions and does her best to respond to all wishes. Recommended!

De Baets Dierk

An unforgettable trip with beautiful views. Well organized (individual walking with a perfect luggage transfer).

If you are the type of person to trust in the universe to provide you with a pathway then these are the people who can help you achieve your way forward. I truly believe that by walking you make your path, and these walks are truly inspiring. The routes are at times challenging but remember it’s just one foot in front of the other. Your luggage and a hot shower waits for you at the end of an inspiring day walking. Great company, wonderful life experience. I recommend the trecks with the care and love of a great team.

Born and raised in Helmond, Mauk left the Netherlands for Tenerife in 1998. There, his passion for mountains and nature flourished, embracing activities like trail running, climbing, and canyoning. Crossing paths with the company in 2021, he transitioned from guiding underground volcanic tunnels to becoming a certified Spanish hiking guide. With a focus on sustainable tourism and local support, he, along with Canary-Hiking, aims to share the beauty of hiking while fostering personal connections and supporting the local economy.

Jeanne van den Reek
Jeanne is the founder of Canary Hiking, which she founded when she was in search of a more positive mindset while battling cancer. She created a website and walked all routes (more than 600 km!), later on going to the Canary Islands with a campervan to truly discover the islands. Jeanne also ran the New York Marathon after diabetes diagnosis, and whichever obstacles she comes across in life, she always finds the beacon of light and hope. Her hope is to transfer her enthusiasm and love for the Canary Islands to her clients.

Frequently asked questions about walking holidays in the Canary Islands

  • The best month for walking holidays in the Canaries depends greatly on what type of weather you want, but March to May and September to November are often ideal.

During these months, the islands enjoy pleasant weather, fewer tourists, and great conditions for hiking and walking. Temperatures are mild without the peak summer heat, which makes outdoor adventures more comfortable. Also, spring and fall offer vibrant landscapes and less crowded trails.

  • Both Tenerife and Gran Canaria are excellent for walking, but they offer very different experiences:

    • Tenerife is ideal for walkers seeking dramatic volcanic landscapes. The standout feature is Mount Teide, Spain’s highest peak, with challenging mountain treks and stunning views. It also offers diverse ecosystems, from pine forests to coastal paths.
    • Gran Canaria is better for variety, with its mix of rugged ravines, green mountains, and desert-like dunes. The island’s routes cover more contrasting terrains, making it a great choice for hikers who want diverse scenery in one trip.

Ultimately, if you’re after awesome volcanic hikes, Tenerife is the winner, while Gran Canaria offers more diverse environments for your money.

  • For a well-rounded experience in the Canary Islands, 7 to 10 days is ideal.

This allows you to explore multiple islands, enjoy diverse hiking routes, and experience each island’s unique landscapes without rushing. You could spend 2-3 days on each of the top islands, like Tenerife, Gran Canaria, La Gomera, or Lanzarote.

If you’re focusing on just one island, 5-7 days is enough to cover most of the key trails and sights comfortably.

  • The cheapest months to hike the Canary Islands are typically January and February, as well as November (excluding the Christmas holiday period).

These months fall within the low tourist season, which means lower flight and accommodation prices. The weather is cooler compared to summer, but it’s still mild and pleasant, which makes it a great time for walking and hiking without the crowds.

  • We believe that La Gomera is the least touristy destination for walking holidays in the Canary Islands. It offers a peaceful, off-the-beaten-path walking experience with fewer resorts and more focus on nature. Known for its quiet villages, ancient laurel forests, and incredible hiking trails, La Gomera doesn’t usually attract traditional tourists – it attracts visitors who are looking for serenity and unspoiled landscapes, far from the larger crowds of islands like Tenerife or Gran Canaria.
