Walking Holidays in Slovenia: From the Alps to the Adriatic Coast

Slovenia is smaller than you think and better than you expect. Somehow, this country has fit the Alps, two UNESCO sites, an emerald river beloved by kayakers, and a stretch of Venetian coast into a space you can drive across in two hours. We walk across the good bits in 8 days: mountains and glacial lakes to start, limestone caves and wine country later, Adriatic at the end. Small group, local guide, cheese tasting at altitude, wine tasting near the coast. Come for the lakes, stay for the fromage.

The adventure, day by day

Experience a week-long guided walking holiday through the best of Slovenia, from the Kamnik-Savinja Alps to the Adriatic coast. We start in Ljubljana and work our way through the country's most rewarding landscapes: the traditional shepherd's plateau of Velika Planina, the trails and lakes of Triglav National Park, the dramatic switchbacks of Vršič Pass, the emerald gorges of the Soča Valley, and the underground drama of Škocjan Caves. Along the way, there's a cheese tasting at a high-altitude shepherd's hut, wine in the Karst region, and a final evening in the medieval town of Piran.

Day 1: Welcome to Ljubljana
Ljubljana city view

We arrive in Ljubljana, Slovenia’s compact and thoroughly charming capital, and spend the afternoon exploring at our own pace: cobblestone streets, baroque facades, the Ljubljanica riverfront, and a hilltop castle watching over the whole scene. In the evening, we meet our guide and fellow travelers over dinner as the week ahead takes shape over the table.

Accommodation: Hotel in Ljubljana

Day 2: Velika Planina
Velika Planina in Slovenia

We drive up to Velika Planina, a high-altitude alpine plateau at around 1,500 m, scattered with traditional wooden shepherd’s huts that have been here for centuries. We hike through lush meadows with sweeping views of the Kamnik-Savinja Alps, learn about the region’s pastoral traditions from our guide, and stop at a shepherd’s hut to sample handmade alpine cheese before returning to Ljubljana for the evening.

Meals: Breakfast
Accommodation: Hotel in Ljubljana
Hiking: 8-9 km (5-5.5 mi), 3-4 hrs
Elevation: +300 m (+985 ft)

Day 3: Pokljuka plateau, Triglav National Park & Vintgar Gorge
Triglav hike in Slovenia

We head into Triglav National Park, Slovenia’s only national park, and hike from the Pokljuka Plateau through enchanting spruce forests before ascending to a summit with glacial valley views and a full panorama of Mount Triglav. We stop at a traditional mountain hut for lunch before descending. In the afternoon, we visit Vintgar Gorge, where wooden walkways suspended above crystal-clear water lead past waterfalls and sheer limestone walls.

Meals: Breakfast
Accommodation: Hotel in Bled
Hiking: 10-14 km (6.2-8.7 mi), 4-5 hrs
Elevation: +600 m (+1,970 ft)

Day 4: Mount Vogel & Lake Bohinj
High hiking in Slovenia

We hike up to Mount Vogel for sweeping views over the Julian Alps and the entire Bohinj basin spread out below. After the ridge, we descend to Lake Bohinj, the largest and most pristine lake in Slovenia, sitting at the heart of Triglav National Park. The afternoon is free: take a swim, walk along the shore, or simply sit on the grass with no agenda whatsoever.

Meals: Breakfast
Accommodation: Hotel in Bled
Hiking: 10 km (6.2 mi), 4-5 hrs
Elevation: +600 m (+1,970 ft)

Day 5: Radovna Valley, Peričnik Waterfall & Slemenova Špica
Pericnik waterfall

We drive through the tranquil Radovna Valley and stop at Peričnik Waterfall, one of Slovenia’s most dramatic cascades, where a natural ledge lets you walk directly behind the curtain of water. From here, we wind up the 50 hairpin bends of Vršič Pass, Slovenia’s highest mountain road, and hike to Slemenova Špica, a grassy viewpoint at 1,911 m with panoramic views over the Julian Alps and the striking silhouette of Mount Jalovec. We descend the southern side of the pass and continue to Bovec for the evening.

Meals: Breakfast
Accommodation: Hotel in Bovec
Hiking: 10 km (6.2 mi), 4-5 hrs
Elevation: +400 m (+1,310 ft)

Day 6: Soča Trail & free afternoon in Bovec
Soca hikers Slovenia

We hike along the Soča Trail, following the emerald-green Soča River through forests, over suspension bridges, and across open meadows. The pace is more relaxed than the alpine days, with the turquoise water keeping things scenic throughout. After the hike, the afternoon is free in Bovec: rafting and canyoning are on offer for those who want more action, or a quieter wander through town for everyone else.

Meals: Breakfast
Accommodation: Hotel in Bovec
Hiking: 12 km (7.5 mi), 3-4 hrs
Elevation: +300 m (+985 ft)

Day 7: Goriška Brda & Škocjan Caves
Skocjan caves

The morning brings a scenic walk through Goriška Brda, Slovenia’s answer to Tuscany: rolling vineyards, hilltop villages, and the quiet pleasure of a landscape built entirely around wine. In the afternoon, we go underground at Škocjan Caves, a UNESCO World Heritage Site where vast chambers, a subterranean canyon, and a hidden river create a sense of scale that is genuinely hard to describe from above ground. A wine tasting in the Karst region rounds out the day before we drive on to Piran for our final night.

Meals: Breakfast
Accommodation: Hotel in Piran
Hiking: 7 km (4.3 mi), 3 hrs
Elevation: +200 m (+655 ft)

Day 8: Piran & departure
Piran departure

The final morning belongs to Piran, one of the most beautifully preserved medieval towns on the Adriatic. We explore the Venetian-inspired old town, climb the church tower for views over the bay, or find a spot by the water for a last coffee. After checkout, we transfer to the departure point.

Nejc made our trip so personal, we felt so welcomed everywhere! The country is truly beautiful. Through Nejc, it seemed we got to experience many things that the average traveler would not be able to experience. Even the accommodations were wonderful, we never wanted to leave!!

The tour is scheduled so every day was different and often they had surprises for us throughout the day. Having two guides we were able to split into different levels of challenges so some would take a more difficult route and some would go with something more comfortable for them. I can’t even begin to put into words how wonderful this trip was.
