All-Women Isle of Skye Tour: 7 Days of Hiking in Scotland

Skye feels like the Scotland you picture before you ever set foot there. Think castles on the shoreline, Highland cows grazing by the road, and peaks disappearing into low cloud before reappearing in golden evening light. It’s one of the most dramatic islands in Europe, and walking is the best way to take it in. On this all-women tour, we spend five days hiking its most iconic spots, from the landslip terrain of the Quiraing to the grassy hillocks of the Fairy Glen. Our base for the week is a small hotel on Loch Dunvegan, reserved just for us, where dinner is cooked over fire.

The adventure, day by day

This 7-day all-women hiking tour is based on the Isle of Skye, with five full days of moderate walking across the island’s most striking corners. Starting in Inverness, we travel by minibus to Skye and settle into a small hotel on Loch Dunvegan, where we stay all six nights. That means no packing and unpacking. The walks follow coastal paths, old tracks, and some loose rocky trails, steering clear of high mountains and ridges. Breakfast and dinner are included every day, along with transport to every trailhead. Weather on Skye changes quickly, so your guide plans each day around the conditions and briefs the group every evening.

Day 1: Meet in Inverness and travel to Skye
inverness gloomy

Arrive in Inverness, where we’ll all meet at 12 pm outside the train station. From there, we set off by minibus across the Highlands toward the Isle of Skye. The drive takes about four hours, including a few stops along the way. Once on the island, we check in to our home for the week: a six-room hotel on the shore of Loch Dunvegan, used only by our group. After settling in, we raise a welcome drink and sit down to our first dinner together, cooked over fire with ingredients grown on site or sourced locally.

Meals: Dinner
Accommodation: The Dunvegan

Day 2: The Quiraing and a scenic drive
women only hiking skye

Our first walk takes us to the Quiraing on the Trotternish peninsula, one of the most unusual landscapes in Scotland. It was formed by the largest landslip in Britain, which left behind a jumble of pinnacles, cliffs, and hidden grassy plateaus. The walk is short but dramatic, and it’s a good way to get a feel for Skye’s terrain and for the group’s pace. Afterward, we round off the day with a scenic drive before heading back to Loch Dunvegan for dinner and a briefing on tomorrow’s plan.

Meals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner
Hiking: 7 km (4.3 mi)
Elevation: +440 m (+1,444 ft) / -440 m (-1,444 ft)
Accommodation: The Dunvegan

Day 3: Rubha Hunish, the northern tip of Skye
Image 5

Today we walk a circuit to Rubha Hunish, the most northerly point of the Trotternish peninsula. The cliff-top path opens up long sea views, and on a clear day we can see much of the Outer Hebrides, including Lewis, Harris, and Uist. The old coastguard lookout here is now a bothy, and it’s a good spot to watch for whales, which are sometimes seen offshore. On the way back, we stop at an old castle and the Skye Museum of Island Life, and we may also meet some Highland cows.

Meals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner
Hiking: 7 km (4.3 mi)
Elevation: +200 m (+656 ft) / -200 m (-656 ft)
Accommodation: The Dunvegan

Days 4-6: A selection of hikes
Old Man of Storr, Scottish Highlands

For the next three days, your guide picks the walks based on the weather and the group, and shares each plan the evening before. Here’s what we may get up to:

    • The Old Man of Storr: On this 5.7 km (3.5 mi) walk with +267 m (+876 ft) of ascent, we take the moderate route along the Storr Trail and skip the ridge. The trail leads to a rock pinnacle about 55 m (180 ft) tall, the remains of volcanic activity around 60 million years ago.
    • Boreraig and Suisnish: We walk to two villages that were cleared in the mid-19th century during the Highland Clearances. The route passes waterfalls, remote beaches on Loch Eishort where sea eagles are sometimes seen, and old industrial remains among wildflowers and orchids. We stop at a café on the way back.
    • MacLeod’s Maidens and Dunvegan Castle: A walk through a birch wood and along Loch Bracadale leads to the sea stacks known as the mother and her two daughters. Nearby is Dunvegan Castle, the ancestral seat of Clan MacLeod.
    • Loch Coruisk: If the sea is calm, we take a scenic boat trip from Elgol to one of Scotland’s most remote lochs, tucked beneath the Cuillin mountains, and return by boat.
    • The Fairy Glen: A wooded walk near Uig takes us among small grassy hillocks, past the rocky outcrop known as Castle Ewen and stone spirals laid out by visitors, with views back over Uig Bay.

Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner

Day 7: Breakfast and transfer back to Inverness
view of dunvegan

Enjoy a final breakfast together on the shore of Loch Dunvegan, then we load up the mini bus and drive back across the Highlands. We expect to reach Inverness Train Station around 1 pm, so book your onward travel for late afternoon to give yourself plenty of room. Plenty of time on the road to swap photos and trade notes on which walk was the favourite.
