Run the Balkans: 8-Day Trail Running Through Albania & Montenegro

8 days | Challenging

The mountains connecting Albania and Montenegro are one of Europe’s last wild corners. Not because they’re hard to reach, but because the rest of the world simply hasn’t caught on yet, and that’s exactly why we run here and why we keep coming back. Over 8 days, ancient shepherd paths lead through limestone gorges and high alpine passes into villages where the food is hearty and the hospitality genuine. A boat ride down the Crnojevića River and a rafting trip on the Tara sit between the running days, and six runs take us from coastal fortress trails above the Bay of Kotor deep into the Accursed Mountains—crossing the Albania-Montenegro border three times on the wildest day of the week.

Adventure Highlights

  • Europe's last wild running frontier: Albania and Montenegro see a fraction of the traffic of their neighbors—trails here are remote, dramatic, and largely unrun by anyone outside the local communities who built them
  • A real taste of the Balkans: Home-cooked meals in family guesthouses, fresh coastal seafood, a boat ride down the Crnojevića River, and a whitewater rafting trip on the Tara—the running is only half the story
  • Three border crossings, one trek: The Accursed Mountains day takes you across the Albania-Montenegro border 3 times, with alpine lake swims, technical rocky terrain, and 3,750 ft (1,150 m) of gain packed into a day

The adventure, day by day

Come join our 8-day guided trail running tour across Albania and Montenegro, covering 6 runs through coastal fortresses, river deltas, and the high passes of the Accursed Mountains! The trip is based in a mix of alpine homesteads, restored farmhouses, and boutique hotels, moving from the Bay of Kotor inland to Skadar Lake, then into the Albanian Alps before finishing in Montenegro's Grebaje Valley. Distances run from 5 to 19 km (3 to 12 mi) per day with multiple route options most days. A boat tour along the Crnojevića River and a rafting trip on the Tara River fill out the rest days between the bigger mountain stretches.

Day 1: Arrival in Dubrovnik and transfer to Perast

Špela
Špela combines a passion for trail running with deep roots in Slovenia's outdoor community. Her background in outdoor education and natural interpretation brings genuine cultural and environmental depth to every route she leads—helping runners understand not just where they are, but why it matters.
Alain
5.00
Alain
Born and raised in Santiago de Chile, Alain discovered an incredible passion for nature, sustainability, and his new favorite sports: rock climbing, scuba diving, and trail running. He traveled to Europe, Australia, and New Zealand, becoming even more excited about running as an amazing way to discover different places. Back in Chile, he had the chance to become a guide in Torres del Paine National Park. He’d spent several years working in Patagonia, a perfect playground for trail running and a place that increased his love for the sport, sustainability, and the natural world, and led him to this opportunity to continue running, traveling, and creating new experiences.
Matt

Matt
A ski patroller and running and climbing guide based in Reno, Matt spends his time exploring every corner of the Sierra Nevada year-round—often with his avalanche rescue dog, Kazak. A runner since middle school, he's drawn to how the sport strips things back to basics and brings together all kinds of people through movement and shared landscapes.
Heini
5.00
Heini
A Finnish biologist who followed a love of Arctic environments all the way to Iceland, Heini built his guiding career leading groups on glaciers before trail running became his defining sport. He rounds out his training with biking, skiing, and climbing, and brings the mindset of a true explorer, equally at home on familiar trails or completely new terrain.
Michael
5.00
Michael
Michael's running story started with a questionable decision: training for a marathon in 30 days. What began as a lapse in judgment became a lasting obsession. Years of road racing eventually gave way to something more meaningful—running as a way to explore cities, cultures, and landscapes. A run through Tokyo crystallized it. With a decade-plus background in media and events, he found his way into the running travel industry and now leads the company with the enthusiasm of someone who genuinely can't imagine doing anything else.
Kiana

Kiana
Raised on O'ahu, Kiana's love of the outdoors began in the ocean before expanding into mountain sports during her Sports Medicine studies in California. With over a decade in the outdoor industry, including guiding and management roles in Yosemite National Park, she brings a deep commitment to helping adventurers become thoughtful stewards of the wild places they explore.
Kara

Kara
A Canadian-raised ecotourism graduate, Kara has spent nearly a decade guiding international running and travel adventures while living across the globe. She blends trail running, yoga, sustainable travel, and outdoor leadership into experiences rooted in curiosity and movement. Her unconventional path—studying ecotourism, then building a life of full-time travel and guiding—has shaped a deeply personal approach to sharing the outdoors with others.
Ciarán
5.00
Ciarán
Ciarán has spent over a decade guiding across disciplines: rock climbing, mountaineering, whitewater kayaking, sailing, and commercial diving. Trail running is his connective thread—a way to move through landscapes with freedom and flow, and to experience new cultures and environments on their own terms. Few guides bring as much range to the mountains.

  • In order to join this Montenegro and Albania running tour, excellent fitness is required, as well as some experience trail running or hiking in mountain terrain.

The most you’ll cover within a day is up to 19 km (12 mi), with up to 1,150 m (3,750 ft) of elevation gain, on the biggest day—which is a hike, not a run. On the running days, the longest distance is around 14 km (9 mi) with significant elevation gain, with multiple shorter distance options also available.

Two days are point-to-point mountain hikes rather than runs: Day 5 (16 km / 10 mi) and Day 6 through the Accursed Mountains (19 km / 12 mi). These hiking days require the fitness to complete the full route, or the option to transfer by van to the next stop instead. You’ll be moving through mountain terrain on consecutive days, so comfort with sustained elevation changes day after day matters more than raw speed.
