Steam rises off volcanic ridges, hot springs wait at the finish line, and Iceland’s wildest running trails unfold underfoot for six days straight. We lace up in Reykjavík and push into Hengill’s steam valleys, tackle highland routes across raw, remote terrain, and finish strong along Heiðmörk’s backyard trails, with Golden Circle icons and South Coast giants filling the days in between. Distances flex to match the group, recovery comes built into every stop, from thermal soaks to a hot spring lagoon finale, and each stride lands somewhere worth catching your breath for.

The adventure, day by day

This 6-day Iceland trail running tour blends genuine competition trail routes with rest days built around Iceland's iconic sights. Based in Reykjavík for the full week, we run Hengill's steam valleys and volcanic ridges, tackle a highland route through Kerlingarfjöll or the Mýrdal area, and finish with a scenic run through Heiðmörk Nature Reserve. Distances flex each day, with shorter and longer options so runners of different levels can choose their challenge. Golden Circle and South Coast sightseeing fill the recovery days in between, and the week wraps up with a soak in the Sky Lagoon before departure.

Day 1: Arrival
Reykjavik on a sunny day

In Reykjavík, we’ll meet our guide and the rest of the group for the first time. After settling into our hotel, we spend the afternoon exploring Reykjavík at an easy pace, getting a feel for the capital before the running begins. The evening brings everyone together to swap stories, compare gear, and get ready for the week ahead.

Accommodation: Arctic Comfort Hotel, Reykjavík

Day 2: Hengill trail run
Iceland woman running

We lace up for our first real test, a run through Hengill’s steam valleys and volcanic ridges, one of Iceland’s most iconic trail routes. Runners choose the shorter or longer distance depending on how much ground they want to cover. Geothermal vents hiss along the trail, and the terrain shifts constantly underfoot. We finish the day soaking in the Laugarvatn Fontana geothermal baths, letting the heat work into tired legs before heading back to Reykjavík.

Meals: Breakfast
Running: 12 km (7.5 mi) or 25 km (15.5 mi)
Accommodation: Arctic Comfort Hotel, Reykjavík

Day 3: Golden Circle experience
Gulfoss waterfall in Iceland

Today is a recovery day, and we trade running shoes for sightseeing along Iceland’s classic Golden Circle. We walk through Þingvellir National Park, watch Geysir erupt on schedule, and stand before the thundering wall of Gullfoss. A stop at Kerið volcanic crater and the geothermal greenhouses of Friðheimar round out the day before we head back to Reykjavík to rest up for tomorrow’s run.

Meals: Breakfast
Accommodation: Arctic Comfort Hotel, Reykjavík

Day 4: Kerlingarfjöll or Mýrdal trail run
Iceland girl runner

We head into the highlands for our second running challenge, tackling a route through Kerlingarfjöll’s geothermal terrain or the Mýrdal area, depending on conditions. Weather plays a role in deciding the exact course, adding an element of adventure to the day. Expect panoramic highland views, colorful volcanic rock, and a proper test of endurance across raw Icelandic terrain.

Meals: Breakfast
Running: 12 km (7.5 mi) or 22 km (13.7 mi)
Accommodation: Arctic Comfort Hotel, Reykjavík

Day 5: South Coast adventure
Black sands in Iceland

Today we recharge along Iceland’s legendary South Coast, taking in Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss, the black sands of Reynisfjara, and the glacier tongue at Sólheimajökull, finishing near the village of Vík. It’s a day for sightseeing rather than running, with plenty of stops to take in some of Iceland’s most photographed scenery before we head back to Reykjavík for a relaxed evening.

Meals: Breakfast
Accommodation: Arctic Comfort Hotel, Reykjavík

Day 6: Heiðmörk trail and Sky Lagoon
Iceland man running and trees

We lace up one final time for a scenic run through Heiðmörk Nature Reserve, Reykjavík’s green backyard wilderness, closing out the week on familiar, easy terrain. Afterward, we head to the Sky Lagoon to soak, stretch out, and reflect on six days of Icelandic trails before transferring to the airport for departure.

Meals: Breakfast
Running: 12 km (7.5 mi)
