Your usual running route called—it’s jealous. Why pound pavement when you could be running peaks in Italy? The Dolomites are one of the great trail running destinations on the planet: UNESCO-listed, stunningly varied, and lined with mountain huts that serve goulash and local cheese at exactly the right moment. We offer two trips—a 6-day version that nails the essential routes, and a 7-day that adds an extra running day and opens with a transfer straight from Venice. Same guides, same rifugio night, same multi-course dinners. Just more of it if you want it.

The adventure, day by day

The 6-day version is based in and around San Martino di Castrozza, a compact village on the southern edge of the Dolomites that makes a great base for the first days, before the trip moves to Cortina d'Ampezzo. Over 5 days of running, we tackle Cima Rosetta, the Cinque Torri loop, the happy valley at Passo Rolle, and the legendary Tre Cime circuit. One night is spent in a rifugio. The trip starts and ends in Venice.

Day 1: Arrival in San Martino di Castrozza
Lakeside View of San Martino di Castrozza, one of the best places to stay in the Dolomites

We meet in Venice in the early afternoon for a group transfer to San Martino di Castrozza, our base for the first few days. Once settled into the boutique hotel in the center of town, we stretch our legs with a stroll to a local vinoteca for aperitivo and introductions. That evening, the first of many great dinners sets the tone for the week, and we run through the plan for tomorrow morning’s first run.

Meals: Dinner
Accommodation: Boutique hotel

Day 2: Cima Rosetta
Start of the run

Today’s objective is Cima Rosetta, the local classic that starts right from town. Don’t be deceived by the numbers—this is a steep, occasionally exposed mountain trail that lights up your lungs and your sense of wonder in equal measure. We hike most of it, reach the otherworldly moonscape of the summit, then descend to the mountain hut below for lunch before heading back to town by gondola. The afternoon is yours to rest before we share a feast together.

Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner
Running/hiking: 8 km (5 mi), 1,200 m (4,000 ft) gain; single-track mountain trail with exposure towards the top
Accommodation: Boutique hotel

Day 3: The happy valley
Runners waving

After breakfast, we drive to Passo Rolle—the start of a pleasantly runnable loop through a bucolic valley ringed by the imposing walls of the lesser-visited Pale di San Martino range. The run finishes at an alpine hut atop a lush plateau, where a lunch of the valley’s celebrated local cheeses awaits. We take a relaxed walk back to the vans, then head to a mountaintop rifugio between San Martino and Cortina. Our crew handles the overnight bags; the evening is ours to soak in the scenery, explore nearby WWI relics, and commune with fellow rifugio guests over drinks and dinner.

Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner
Running: 15 km (9 mi), 500 m (1,600 ft) gain; dirt road and single-track trail
Walking: 2.5 km (1.5 mi) to vans after lunch
Accommodation: Mountain rifugio

Day 4: Cinque Torri
Runner on a mountain

We set out from the rifugio after breakfast for a technical loop around the iconic Cinque Torri—five dramatic rock towers that rank among the most photographed formations in the Dolomites. We finish with a hearty lunch at a mountaintop rifugio with panoramic views, then have the afternoon free to soak in the scenery and explore the surrounding WWI relics before our crew transports us to Cortina d’Ampezzo. Tonight’s dinner is on your own, with restaurant recommendations from the guides.

Meals: Breakfast, lunch
Running: 13 km (8 mi), 1,000 m (3,300 ft) gain; single-track trail
Accommodation: Boutique hotel

Day 5: Tre Cime
Multiple runners on a trail

We’ve saved the grand finale for last. The Tre Cime loop is one of the most iconic routes in the Dolomites—not off the beaten track, but utterly unmissable. Rolling hills, a runnable pace, and views of the three famous rock spires at every turn make for a satisfying send-off to a big week. The run finishes at a small alpine hut famous for its goulash, which we sample thoroughly. We then hike back to the vans and return to Cortina for some downtime before one last feast at a local farm on the outskirts of town.

Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner
Running: 12–16 km (7–10 mi), 720–1,000 m (1,600–3,000 ft) gain; dirt road and single-track trail
Walking: 2.5 km (1.5 mi) to vans after lunch
Accommodation: Boutique hotel

Day 6: Departure
Venice town in Italy

One last breakfast together, then we pack up and transfer back to Venice for onward flights or travel.

Meals: Breakfast

The full 7-day adventure opens in Venice and gives us an extra day and run before the 6-day itinerary begins. After the Venice transfer, we're based in Cortina d'Ampezzo for the first part of the trip, then move south to San Martino di Castrozza. Five days of running cover Cima Rosetta, the Cinque Torri loop, the happy valley at Passo Rolle, a stunning point-to-point traverse from Passo Giau to the base of Monte Pelmo, and the Tre Cime circuit. One night is spent in a rifugio.

Day 1: Arrival
Cortina in summer

We meet in Venice in the early afternoon for a group transfer to Cortina d’Ampezzo—the most celebrated resort town in the Italian Alps and our base for the next few days. After checking into our boutique hotel right in the pedestrian-only town center, we walk over to a local vinoteca for aperitivo and introductions. That evening, the first of many great dinners gets the week off to a proper start, and we run through the details for tomorrow’s first run.

Accommodation: Boutique hotel

Day 5: Passo Giau to Pelmo traverse
Walking on a trail

If your legs are starting to feel the week’s cumulative effort, today delivers a rewarding mix of challenge and charm. After breakfast, we head out on a point-to-point run from Passo Giau toward the dramatic base of Monte Pelmo, one of the Dolomites’ most iconic peaks. The route winds through rolling alpine terrain with ever-present views of the mountain, with a mix of runnable sections and steady climbs. We finish at Rifugio Venezia for a well-earned lunch beneath towering rock walls. Since no vehicles are allowed in the valley, a long walk follows lunch; once we reach the vans, it’s back to Cortina for a free evening to rest and explore.

Meals: Breakfast, lunch
Running: 20 km (12 mi), 700 m (2,300 ft) gain, 975 m (3,200 ft) descent; dirt road and single-track trail

Born and raised in Santiago de Chile, Alain discovered an incredible passion for nature, sustainability, and his new favorite sports: rock climbing, scuba diving, and trail running. He traveled to Europe, Australia, and New Zealand, becoming even more excited about running as an amazing way to discover different places. Back in Chile, he had the chance to become a guide in Torres del Paine National Park. He’d spent several years working in Patagonia, a perfect playground for trail running and a place that increased his love for the sport, sustainability, and the natural world, and led him to this opportunity to continue running, traveling, and creating new experiences.

On the biggest days, you’ll cover up to 20 km (12 mi) with up to 1,200 m (4,000 ft) of elevation gain.

      • The 6-day itinerary covers roughly 56 km (35 mi) and 3,660 m (12,000 ft) of total elevation gain across 4 running days.
      • The 7-day covers roughly 72–76 km (45–47 mi) and 4,300 m (14,000 ft) across 5 running days.

This is not a beginner-friendly trip. Everyone is expected to carry mandatory gear, handle exposure on steep mountain trails, and be prepared to complete the full distance each day. The guides set a comfortable, non-competitive pace and expect hiking on the ascents—but the terrain is demanding regardless.

  • Both trips cover the Dolomites’ best trails with the same guides, the same rifugio night, and the same standard of accommodation and food. Here’s how they differ:

      • 6-day Classic: Based primarily in San Martino di Castrozza, then Cortina d’Ampezzo. Four running days covering Cima Rosetta, the happy valley at Passo Rolle, Cinque Torri, and Tre Cime. Roughly 56 km (35 mi) and 3,660 m (12,000 ft) of total elevation gain. All dinners included except none.
      • 7-day Full Loop: Opens with a transfer from Venice and spends more time based in Cortina d’Ampezzo. Five running days—the same four routes plus a point-to-point traverse from Passo Giau to the base of Monte Pelmo. Roughly 72–76 km (45–47 mi) and 4,300 m (14,000 ft) of total elevation gain. One dinner in Cortina is on your own.

If you have the time and the legs, the 7-day is the fuller experience. If you’re working with a tighter schedule or want to ease into the distance, the 6-day hits all the essential routes without anything left to complain about.

  • Here’s a list of the equipment you need to bring:

      • Day pack large enough to carry all the items listed (around a 25-40L bag)
      • Water bottle or hydration bladder (2L capacity)
      • Trail running shoes
      • Comfortable running clothes
      • Spare clothes for layering
      • Waterproof rain jacket
      • Sunhat
      • Toiletries (sunscreen, hand sanitizer, bug spray, toilet paper, etc.)
      • Sunglasses
      • Camera — optional (but recommended)

Dress comfortably and for the weather in clothes you can move in. We suggest bringing clothing appropriate for the season. Layers are best and don’t wear jeans.
