Grand Canyon and Sedona: 7-Day Women’s Hiking Tour with Hotel Stays

You don’t need a heavy pack or a night on the canyon floor to really know the Grand Canyon. On this trip, a small group of women hikes below the South Rim by day, following historic trails down past rock layers more than a billion years old, then heads back up to a hot shower and a real bed. From there, we trade the canyon for Sedona’s red rock country, with slickrock trails, wide-open views, and time to slow down by the pool. Great hikes, good food, and plenty of shared laughter make this a more personal way to see Arizona’s canyon country than the typical visit.

The adventure, day by day

This seven-day, women-only trip is built for hikers who want to experience the Grand Canyon without carrying a backpack or camping below the rim. It takes in three very different landscapes: the ponderosa pine forests of Flagstaff, the Grand Canyon's South Rim, and the red rock country around Sedona and Oak Creek Canyon. We spend two nights at a lodge within walking distance of the rim, with day hikes down the historic Grandview and Hermit Trails, then three nights in Sedona hiking Brins Mesa and Airport Mesa. Six nights in hotels and a national park lodge are included, along with all meals from the first dinner through the final breakfast, except one lunch. The daily plan may shift with weather and group interests.

Day 1: Welcome to Flagstaff and a night at the observatory
Flagstaff Arizona route 66

Arrive at Flagstaff Pulliam Airport, where the group meets up by 4 pm. From there it’s a short hop to our lodging, tucked among tall ponderosa pines at around 7,000 ft (2,134 m), which gives everyone a head start on acclimatizing. We’ll sit down together for our first dinner, swap introductions, and talk through the week ahead. Then comes the part people tend to remember: a guided visit to Lowell Observatory under Flagstaff’s famously dark skies. You’ll look at stars and planets through powerful telescopes and hear how this place earned its spot in astronomy history, Pluto’s discovery included.

Meals: Dinner
Accommodation: Little America Flagstaff (or similar)

Day 2: Desert View Watchtower and the Grandview Trail
Desert View Watchtower and the Grandview Trail — Hiking in Grand Canyon | Arizona

We get an early start and drive about 1 hour and 40 minutes north to the Grand Canyon. First stop is Mary Colter’s Desert View Watchtower, a pretty great spot for your first look into the canyon. Then we dig into mining history on the Grandview Trail, built by prospector Pete Berry, who struck a copper vein out on Horseshoe Mesa and founded the Last Chance Mine. Pete and his wife Martha later opened the trail to early tourists, which paid better than copper. Hiking out to Coconino Saddle, it’s only 3.5 km (2.2 mi) round trip, but it’s steep, rocky, exposed in places, and all switchbacks. Tonight we check into Maswik Lodge.

Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner
Distance: 3.5 km (2.2 mi)
Elevation: +366 m (+1,200 ft) / -366 m (-1,200 ft)
Accommodation: Maswik Lodge (or similar)

Day 3: Hermit Trail to Santa Maria Spring
Hermit Trail to Santa Maria Spring — Hiking in Grand Canyon | Arizona

Another early start, which becomes the pattern here as we chase the cooler morning hours. Today we head to the far end of the South Rim and drop in from Hermits Trailhead down to Santa Maria Spring, where a small hut gives us shade and a seat before the climb back out. Like Grandview, this is one of the quieter trails on the rim, though crowds weren’t the point: it was built to haul people, pork chops, and bottles of Porto to Hermit Camp, a luxury tourist camp that predated Phantom Ranch by a decade and closed in 1930. We’ll also fit in another Mary Colter building, before or after the hike. Prefer an easier day? There’s a rim walk to Yavapai Point instead, 6.4 km (4 mi) round trip.

Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner
Distance: 8 km (5 mi)
Elevation: +536 m (+1,760 ft) / -536 m (-1,760 ft)
Accommodation: Maswik Lodge (or similar)

Day 4: Free morning at the canyon, then on to Sedona
sedona downtown

After three days on the trails, a slower morning feels good. Spend it however you like: walk a stretch of the rim, sit in on one of the daily ranger programs, drop by the Visitor Center or the Yavapai Geology Museum, or just find a quiet spot and stare at the canyon for a while. Once we regroup, we load up the vans and drive about two hours south to Sedona, trading pine forest for red rock. There’s time to settle into our rooms at the Sky Rock Inn before we head out for dinner and our first evening in town.

Meals: Breakfast, dinner
Driving: About 2 hours
Accommodation: Sky Rock Inn (or similar)

Day 5: Red rock views on the Brins Mesa Trail
Red rock views on the Brins Mesa Trail — Hiking in Grand Canyon | Arizona

Sedona sits ringed by red rock buttes, steep canyon walls, and pine forest, and today we get right into it. The Brins Mesa Trail starts at the edge of town, so there’s barely any driving before boots hit dirt. The path opens up quickly and gives us wide, unobstructed views of the formations that made Sedona and Oak Creek Canyon famous. Our route takes in Soldier’s Pass and covers about 8 km (5 mi) with 183 m (600 ft) of elevation change, including a few stretches of slickrock underfoot. We’re back in town with plenty of time to clean up before dinner.

Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner
Distance: 8 km (5 mi)
Elevation: 183 m (600 ft)
Accommodation: Sky Rock Inn (or similar)

Day 6: Optional Airport Mesa loop or a free day in Sedona
Optional Airport Mesa loop or a free day in Sedona — Hiking in Grand Canyon | Arizona

Today is yours to shape. Anyone who wants to keep moving starts at the Airport Mesa Vortex, one of Sedona’s famous energy spots, then carries on around the Airport Mesa Loop, a 5.6 km (3.5 mi) circuit with an optional 1.6 km (1 mi) out-and-back spur and yet more red rock views. If you’d rather give your legs a break, Sedona makes it easy: spa treatments, art galleries, and shopping are all close at hand, and plenty of people swap boots for a massage after a week of trails. Hike first and browse later, or skip the trail entirely. Either way, we come back together in the evening for a final dinner as a group.

Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner
Distance: Optional 5.6 km (3.5 mi) loop, with an optional 1.6 km (1 mi) spur
Accommodation: Sky Rock Inn (or similar)

Day 7: Farewell to canyon country
Hiking in Grand Canyon | Arizona

We share one last breakfast together before saying goodbye to canyon country. The drive from Sedona back to Flagstaff takes about 45 minutes, and we’ll have you at the airport by 10:30 am, so book flights out any time after 12 pm.

Meals: Breakfast

The guides were so friendly and made everyone feel comfortable and confident. I appreciated their flexibility in wanting to meet everyone’s desires throughout the week (providing alternative hikes, dropping folks off at the shopping center….) The rooms were all comfortable, and there was no way you could go hungry!

This was almost like 3 trips in one! Flagstaff, The Grand Canyon and Sedona were all uniquely beautiful. Guides Carrie and Linda were particularly knowledgeable about everything on this trip pointing out rocks, plants and history. I came home with a list of books to read – some about the areas we visited and some from interesting discussions over dinner with engaging companions. Communication is one of the strengths of this company – before, during and after the trip. Two changes had to be made to the itinerary due to trail closures and permitting changes. We were advised of these changes before the trip began. Options were offered on this trip to allow us to make it the best trip for each of us. That was really appreciated by all.

The camaraderie that developed among the women on this trip was special. We had amazing guides in Carrie and Linda; very comfortable lodging; and delicious meals. The Southwestern US is an especially beautiful part of this country and to be able to explore it in the company of enthusiastic and appreciative women was a pleasure.

I liked the organization and the communication of it. Linda and Carrie kept us in the know- verbally and through text. I liked the options that were given. I enjoyed the option of viewing the sunrise over the Grand Canyon and going to the Lowell Observatiory. In addition, I felt safe. I liked how the Guides kept reminders to hydrate and take it easy. The respect and understanding and patience that was given by all.

  • In order to join this Grand Canyon hotel hiking tour, good fitness is required, and you should be comfortable hiking on steep, rocky terrain. The most you’ll hike within a day is up to 8 km (5 mi), with up to 536 m (1,760 ft) of elevation gain.

While the overall mileage isn’t high, don’t underestimate the heat, the elevation changes, and the challenge of back-to-back hikes into the Grand Canyon. Canyon trails have significant elevation gain and loss, with rocky, partly unmaintained sections and steep drop-offs. Sedona’s trails are well maintained but include lots of stair-stepping. Flagstaff and the South Rim sit at around 2,134 m (7,000 ft), so the start of the trip helps with acclimatization. In the weeks before the trip, aim for 30 to 45 minutes of aerobic exercise like hill walking, jogging, or stair climbing, three to four times a week. Trekking poles are required for this trip.

  • Most Grand Canyon hiking trips mean carrying a heavy pack and camping below the rim. This one is built around day hikes, so you get to hike down into the canyon on historic trails like the Grandview and Hermit Trails, then head back up to a hot shower and a real bed every night. Two of those nights are at a lodge on the South Rim, within walking distance of the canyon’s edge. The trip also goes beyond the canyon itself, pairing it with Sedona’s red rock trails, an evening at Lowell Observatory, and the Desert View Watchtower. With a small, women-only group of up to nine and free time built in, it’s a more relaxed and personal way to experience the Grand Canyon.

  • Gear:

      • Day pack (25-40L)

      • Hiking poles (optional, but helpful on the steep, rocky descents into the canyon)
      • Headlamp with fresh batteries for the early starts and the observatory evening

    Clothing & footwear:

      • Sturdy hiking boots or trail shoes with good grip for rocky trails and slickrock
      • Moisture-wicking hiking layers, plus a warm mid-layer for cool mornings at 7,000 ft (2,135 m)
      • Waterproof rain jacket
      • Sunhat with a brim and sunglasses
      • Comfortable clothes for dinners and town time in Sedona
      • Swimsuit for the pool and Jacuzzi in Sedona

    Other:

      • Electrolyte mix or salty snacks to keep up with the heat
      • Any personal medications and a small personal first-aid kit
      • Camera (optional, but recommended)

Dress comfortably and for the weather in clothes you can move in. We suggest bringing clothing appropriate for the season. Layers are best and don’t wear jeans.
