Death Valley National Park: All-Women Hiking Tour

Winter in the desert means something different in Death Valley: sunny skies, mild days, and trails that feel almost otherworldly. This five-day, women-only hiking tour trades the gray months for wide-open badlands, salt flats, and canyon light, with a route that hits the park’s icons—Rhyolite ghost town, Badwater Basin, Golden Canyon—plus quieter corners most visitors skip. Your guides bring the geology, ecology, and human history of the valley to life along the way, so every stop means more than just a photo op. Between hikes, evenings unwind at a historic desert ranch, with good food and a group of women who showed up for the same reason you did.

The adventure, day by day

This five-day women-only hiking tour explores Death Valley National Park at the most comfortable time of year to visit—winter, when the desert trades summer's extreme heat for sunny days in the 60s and 70s. Based out of Las Vegas, the trip moves between the park's most iconic spots and its quieter corners: ghost towns, salt flats, canyons, sand dunes, and a volcanic crater, with the historic Oasis at Death Valley as home base for three nights. Guides handle all the logistics and share their knowledge of the valley's geology and history along the way, while the group's small size keeps things personal. It's an excellent trip for novice hikers looking for a supportive introduction to multi-day hiking.

Day 1: Arrive in Las Vegas and welcome dinner

Arrive in Las Vegas anytime before 5 pm. After settling in at the hotel, we meet at 5:30 pm to get acquainted, go over trip details, and share our first group dinner together. The rest of the evening is yours—rest up for the adventure ahead or maybe wander the Strip for a little Las Vegas vibe.

Meals: Dinner
Accommodation: Tuscany Suites and Casino (or similar), Las Vegas

Day 2: Drive to Death Valley via Rhyolite and Badwater Basin
Drive to Death Valley via Rhyolite and Badwater Basin — Hiking in Death Valley National Park | California

We leave Las Vegas, heading toward Death Valley National Park with a stop at the quirky Rhyolite Ghost Town. Entering through Hell’s Gate, we’ll get our first taste of the park’s wild geology on the drive in. After a picnic lunch and visit to the visitor center, we check in at Oasis at Death Valley—our home base for the next three nights. There’s still time for a walk on Badwater Basin’s vast salt flats before dinner, taking in the lowest point in North America.

Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner
Accommodation: The Ranch at Death Valley (or similar)

Day 3: Golden Canyon-Gower Gulch hike and Mesquite Dunes sunset

We start the day hiking the Golden Canyon-Gower Gulch Loop—4.5 miles (7.2 km) of rolling, ever-changing scenery beneath Manley Beacon and along dramatic cliffs. Lunch is on the trail, grabbing a view under Manly Peak’s golden mudstone hills. The afternoon is relaxed, whether you want another mini-adventure or downtime. As sunset nears, we regroup for a playful wander through the Mesquite Dunes—maybe capping things off with a dose of stargazing under pristine desert skies.

Day 4: Ubehebe Crater rim walk and Salt Creek pupfish
Ubehebe Crater rim walk and Salt Creek pupfish — Hiking in Death Valley National Park | California

We get an early start for the northern reaches of the park, stopping first at the 600-ft-deep (183 m) Ubehebe Crater left by a volcanic blast centuries ago. Walk the crater rim and check out Little Hebe and other smaller craters—about 2.4 km (1.5 mi) on foot. After a picnic lunch, stroll the Salt Creek boardwalk to spot the tiny endangered pupfish. Once back at the ranch, take your pick—dip in the pool, lounge in the shade, check out the Borax Museum, or head out for a short hike. In the evening, appetizers and a group dinner wrap up our day.

Day 5: Zabriskie Point, Amargosa Opera House, and return to Las Vegas

On our final day, we swing by Zabriskie Point for one last panoramic look, then make our way back toward Las Vegas. There may be stops at the famous Amargosa Opera House or the Ash Meadows National Wildlife Refuge for a last glimpse of pupfish, if timing allows. We plan to reach Las Vegas Airport by 3 pm—plenty of time to catch an evening flight or keep the adventure rolling.

I feel like the “little train who could” although I suffered from earlier misgivings and doubts. Well, I could and I did! Yay! But much of my “success” was due to the understanding, guidance, encouragement, and expertise of our wonderful guides. Success is nearly always from the top down. And it was due to the wisdom, kindness, patience and insight of Chris and Deb that our group hung together, supported each other, and truly enjoyed getting to know each other.

I really enjoyed everything about the trip, would consider doing it again someday.
