All-Women Bernese Oberland Hiking Tour: 6 Days in Wengen

6 days | Moderate to Challenging
From $3,521 ()
Book a call

In June, the meadows above Wengen are full of wildflowers, and the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau still hold plenty of snow. It’s one of the best times of year to walk in the Bernese Oberland. On this all-women hiking tour, our base is Wengen, a car-free village reached by a small mountain train and one of Switzerland’s earliest tourist destinations. Each morning, we step out of the hotel door and use trains, buses, and cable cars to reach the trails, from the ridge over the Faulhorn to the waterfalls of the Jungfrau-Aletsch area. Evenings are spent back at our hotel, with the three peaks right outside the balcony.

Adventure Highlights

  • Four classic alpine hikes: Schynige Platte to First, the Eigergletscher route, a UNESCO waterfall valley, and a Mürren loop (and, of course, we pass beneath Eiger!)
  • A car-free base with a view: We spend all five nights at a long-running hotel in Wengen, where each room has a balcony looking out to the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau
  • Women-only, locally guided: Small-group hiking with a guide who knows these valleys inside out, plus a lift pass covering the whole Jungfrau region

The adventure, day by day

Six days based in one hotel, so you unpack once. We meet in Wengen on Friday afternoon for a welcome briefing and dinner together, then settle into an easy rhythm: breakfast between 7.30 and 9 am, out on the trail by 9.30, back at the hotel between 4 and 5 pm. Four full hiking days follow, each reached by cable car, train, or bus on our included lift pass, covering the Faulhorn ridge, the Eiger, the Jungfrau-Aletsch waterfalls, and Mürren. Evenings are spent over dinner in the hotel. We say goodbye after breakfast on the final morning.

Day 1: Arrival in Wengen, welcome briefing, and dinner
Arrival in Wengen, welcome briefing, and dinner — Hiking in Wengen | Switzerland

Travel in via Zurich or Geneva, then connect by train to Interlaken and up to car-free Wengen on the little mountain railway. Your guides can advise on routes and help you get your tickets sorted. Meet at Wengen train station at 5 pm to head to the hotel together, or arrange a pickup at a time that suits you. Everyone needs to be in by 6 pm for the welcome briefing in the lounge, where you’ll hear how the week will run. Dinner together at the hotel follows at 7 pm. Your room has a balcony looking straight across at the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau.

Meals: Dinner
Accommodation: Hotel Belle Vue, Wengen

Day 2: Schynige Platte via Faulhorn to First
Schynige Platte via Faulhorn to First — Hiking in Wengen | Switzerland

After breakfast between 7.30 and 9 am, we set off for one of Switzerland’s most iconic panoramic hikes. From Schynige Platte we walk out through alpine meadows thick with wildflowers, then climb steadily to Faulhorn at 2,681 m (8,796 ft), home to one of the country’s oldest mountain hotels and a 360-degree view of everything around us. It’s a good spot to stop, catch your breath, and take it all in. From there we drop down along a scenic ridge path to First, with the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau keeping us company most of the way. We aim to be back at the hotel between 4 and 5 pm for dinner together.

Meals: Breakfast, dinner
Distance: 15 km (9.2 mi)
Elevation: +700 m (+2,297 ft) / -500 m (-1,640 ft)
Accommodation: Hotel Belle Vue, Wengen

Day 3: Männlichen to Wengen via the Eigergletscher
Männlichen to Wengen via the Eigergletscher — Hiking in Wengen | Switzerland

Today is all about getting close to the Eiger and understanding why this wall of rock has pulled people here for generations. We start high at Männlichen and traverse towards the Eigergletscher, with the north face looming above us and more flower-filled meadows underfoot. The long descent back down to Wengen is the real work of the day, so poles are worth having. Pick up something from the bakery before we leave, or we may stop at a mountain restaurant for a snack along the way. Back at the hotel by late afternoon, with dinner together in the evening and a briefing for tomorrow.

Meals: Breakfast, dinner
Distance: 16 km (10 mi)
Elevation: +500 m (+1,640 ft) / -1,200 m (-3,937 ft)
Accommodation: Hotel Belle Vue, Wengen

Day 4: Jungfrau-Aletsch and the waterfall valley
Jungfrau-Aletsch and the waterfall valley — Hiking in Wengen | Switzerland

Today we head into the UNESCO World Heritage region of Jungfrau-Aletsch for a high, spectacular hike with views into the Sefinen Valley. The trail takes us through the remote mountain scenery around Obersteinberg, where the peaks feel wonderfully close and the crowds disappear. From there it’s a long, steady descent past a string of famous waterfalls, saving the best for last with the Talbachfall. Lunch is whatever you’ve picked up from the bakery or packed in your rucksack, eaten somewhere with a view. We aim to be back at the hotel by late afternoon, in good time to put your feet up on the balcony before dinner together.

Meals: Breakfast, dinner
Distance: 14 km (8.6 mi)
Elevation: +600 m (+1,969 ft) / -1,200 m (-3,937 ft)
Accommodation: Family-run hotel in Wengen

Day 5: Mürren circular hike via Allmendhubel
Mürren circular hike via Allmendhubel — Hiking in Wengen | Switzerland

For our last full day of walking we cross to the other side of the valley and start in Mürren, another car-free village with a front-row seat to the big peaks. The route loops up via Allmendhubel and takes in plenty of variety, from gentle alpine meadows still full of flowers in June to well-maintained paths that keep the views coming the whole way round. It’s a scenic, satisfying finish to the week, with time to enjoy it rather than rush. Expect to be back at the hotel in the late afternoon, then a final dinner together to toast four long days in the Alps.

Meals: Breakfast, dinner
Distance: 12 km (7.4 mi)
Elevation: +700 m (+2,297 ft) / -700 m (-2,297 ft)
Accommodation: Family-run hotel in Wengen

Day 6: Breakfast together and departure
Breakfast together and departure — Hiking in Wengen | Switzerland

One more buffet breakfast together, a last look at the Eiger from the balcony, then we leave Wengen around 10:30 am for the train station and onward connections to Zurich or Geneva. Check-out is at 12 noon, so there’s no need to dash off if you’d like a slower morning. Your guides can advise on the best routes home and help sort your tickets. If you have the time, staying on and travelling further by train through Switzerland is well worth it, and the Bernina Express experience that follows this trip can be requested in the notes when you book.

  • In order to join this Bernese Oberland hiking tour, good fitness is required as well as basic hiking experience. The most you’ll hike within a day is up to 16 km (9.9 mi), with up to 700 m (2,297 ft) of elevation gain and up to 1,200 m (3,937 ft) of descent.

These are long alpine days of up to six hours of walking, heading up to high viewpoints and ridges. The focus is on endurance rather than speed, and we keep a steady pace with time to stop for the wildflowers. You’ll need strong knees and ankles, stamina, and a good level of fitness, especially for the long descents. Hiking poles are worth bringing for those. As a guideline, you should be able to:

      • Walk 13 km (8 mi) easily
      • Keep moving for 3–4 hours and feel tired but not exhausted
      • Walk uphill without gasping for breath, such as climbing 20 flights of stairs without stopping

To prepare, your guides recommend a weekly hike of 13 km (8 mi), with a longer one once a month, plus regular uphill walking on hills and stairs. Your guides may adjust the program depending on the weather.
