Difficulty
This adventure is tailored for experienced hikers with great fitness, who are comfortable with demanding treks on uneven terrain while carrying their own gear (approximately 9kg / 19lbs).
Check out the itinerary to learn about day-by-day distances and elevation changes, but in general, daily hikes span about 20 km (13 mi), requiring 5-8 hours of trekking each day, with no marked trails, river crossings, and stays in basic mountain huts. This will total in over 150 km (93 miles) over 12 days. The volcanic landscape can be challenging, and the weather can be unforgiving. If you’re seeking a challenging hiking adventure and are ready for multiple full-day treks, the rewards are immense.
The landscapes are so epic they make Yellowstone look like child’s play, with paths strewn across challenging volcanic terrain, over rivers and past glaciers. Hike all day among vibrant mountains, vast lava fields and moss painted valleys. Authentic mountain huts allow you to rest after long hikes spent trekking under the midnight sun. Some nights you’ll even rest under sleeping volcanoes! To top it off, weather conditions can have you experiencing all four seasons in just a few short hours, making this the ultimate adventure test and one you’ll be reminiscing about for years to come.

Spend the day surrounded by beautiful pink and white flowers growing in the desert soil, and witness the breathtaking Myrdalsjökull glacier just a few kilometers away. The glacier sitting on top of the explosive volcano Katla is the fourth largest ice cap. It covers nearly 600 square kilometres, and the blue ice streaked with different shades of white will leave you breathless. From the desert plain and escorted by the Hattafell volcano, descend to the vicinity of the Emstrur canyon where the refuge is located and spend the night.

Truly the HIDDEN TRAILS of Iceland, we spent almost all of our time by ourselves, away from the crowds on the Laugevegur Trail, out of sight of humanity and signs of civilization. Every step of the way, every step for ten days, our view was NatGeo worthy: glaciers, volcanoes, lava rock and sand, moss covered hills, hot springs and river crossings. Stark landscape yielded stunning photos; this was an EPIC hut to hut hike, truly the best trip I've ever taken!

The scenery is extraordinary both in terms of its rugged beauty and exquisite colours - the pics in brochure are very accurate. The hike had everything - river crossings, mountains, plains, naked swims on ice lakes and soaking on hot pools - truly fabulous

I am so glad we did this trip rather than just the Laugevegur. We spent days seeing no one else, hiking trails that brought view after incredible view. The group was great—everyone was helpful, kind and supportive.

This Iceland adventure was truly the experience of a lifetime, taking us deep into the remote Highlands through landscapes, colors, rivers, mountains, and volcanic terrain that photographs simply cannot capture. The journey challenged me physically and pushed this Alabama flatlander well outside his comfort zone, but every difficult climb, river crossing, and mile was rewarded with scenery unlike anything I have ever experienced. If you're sitting at home wondering whether you should sign up, my advice is simple: do it—you don't have to thank me, just be thankful you did!

It was way more than expected (honestly, wasn’t sure what to expect). The change in topography, elevation, and difficulty was daily. Especially for the first 8 days. The amount of hiking per day was spot on. The adventure was a lifetime highlight reel.

This is a challenging trip that pays off in great rewards. Leaving the crowded more common trails behind you will adventure into breathtaking landscapes that are lightly explored. You get the experience of the small rustic huts along with a few larger huts as you come to appreciate everything this wild place has to offer. Excellent guide, plentiful food and lots of laughter.

The Hidden Trails in the Highlands of Iceland with Amarok Adventures was so incredibly unique! The rocky volcanic landscapes with neon green moss defining the slopes were so colorful! Rushing cascading streams, huge pounding waterfalls, and glacial lakes at every turn were breathtaking. We were so lucky to go off busy trails and explore the back country for big glacier views. Our guide, Albert, is super competent in guiding groups, arranging huts, all logistics, describing the varied geology, communication, safe river crossings, and cooking delicious meals. The hiking days were arranged to build up to longer days, with an active rest day in the middle. I loved staying in the cozy dry huts rather than tenting in Iceland's variable weather. It was great not to carry a full backpack load of tent, stove and food. Our group shared many smiles, memories and fun laughs with our guide. I highly recommend Amarok Adventures for a spectacular adventure of a lifetime off busy trails with unforgettable scenery.

A very unique hike across the hidden places of Icelands highlands. We came across pristine lakes and waterfalls that it seems only sheep usually frequent. We climbed mountains and walked down valleys, just us!

Just an incredible trip. Most definitely loved the “off” trail and less touristy portion of the hike, even if that meant no showers. I loved the 2 smallest huts the best given the cozy nature and all the damp clothes and gear hanging everywhere. The views were spectacular and it was such an amazing and memorable experience.

The trek was amazing and the scenery was mind-boggling. At the end of each day you thought that the next day couldn't possibly be better than this, but somehow it was. I think our entire group felt honored to be able to go places and see things that few others have ever seen. Iceland is beautiful, but those that don't go into the highlands have no idea just how beautiful it really is.

It’s been more than 20 years since my first visit in Iceland. And the same amount of years since I was dreaming about returning one day to explore parts not included in the tourists maps; finally that moment arrived…. Pictures are supposed to tell the story, but I am afraid they will do no justice to the fairy tale landscape I’ve walked, seen and touched. More than half of the 160 km walked were on wild parts of the highlands, away from any souls, but full of Icelandic tales, sheep (thanks for the tracks to help us navigate) and the amazing nature. None of these would have been possible without the fabulous support of Amarok Adventures. There are no words to thanks enough our guide Alberto Ojembarrena for leading the way, taking care of us in any situation, astonishing meals cooked in the middle of nowhere and for your friendship. All I dream about now is to come back soon… I know you have a lot to still show us….

I sincerely offer the highest praise for Amarok Adventures and the Hidden Trails of Iceland. I participated in the July 24 to Aug 4, 2024 group, led by Albert Ohembarrena, and the adventure exceeded my expectations in every regard. The adventure is extraordinary, trekking for days through the remote highlands and into areas where there are no marked trails. The scenery is, of course, spectacular and as varied as you can find. The adventure is organized so as to build confidence and strength as the days progress. I found that by the end I was confidently and competently traversing terrain that early on I found intimidating. This was an experience of a lifetime, and I was in no way disappointed! I can unconditionally recommend Amarok Adventures and look forward to joining them in another adventure soon.

The scenery was amazing as was the route used - you do get off the busy trails (but you’re never really isolated in truth) seeing far more than if you only did the Laugavegur trail. The small huts in the remote areas were great, but some of the larger busy huts were overcrowded and not so great. The large hut at the end was very good.

This is the ultimate hiking trip in Iceland! The 12 day "Hidden Iceland" Hut to Hut Hiking Tour wound through some of the most beautiful scenery to be found in Iceland. This is a trip for people that have a sense of adventure. Participants walk barefoot across lush moss meadows, wade knee deep in cold clear mountain streams, and sleep in historic shepherd's huts. The food is fabulous, prepared by the guide. For me, it was a trip of a lifetime!

I did not know exactly what to expect of our group adventure. I was initially a little concerned about group synergy with 12 strangers coming together to join in a trip of level 3 challenge. I was pleasantly surprised on how things turned out with participants of various backgrounds and abilities come together on a daily basis to make things work out. Trip leaders can only do so much to encourage and support this type of behavior. This key element was definitely the best part of our adventure where individuals got to know and support each other. That’s five star rated in my book.
