We begin our journey in Lisbon and drive west to the dramatic Peninha Sanctuary, perched high above the Atlantic. From here, we start our hike, descending along coastal trails toward Guincho Beach, where wind, waves, and wide-open views define the landscape. Continuing onward, we walk through the protected Cresmina Dunes, a striking meeting point of ocean, sand, and sky, before stopping for lunch near the dunes. In the afternoon, we transfer to the seaside town of Cascais to check in, refresh, and gather for a welcome dinner together.

We descend to the beach to explore the sands before transferring to Sagres on the Algarve coast, a place deeply tied to Portugal’s Age of Discoveries. Those opting for a shorter walk enjoy a relaxed countryside lunch stop before rejoining the group. We gather for dinner in Sagres.

Our final day offers an optional coastal hike beginning directly from our hotel in Sagres. We follow high clifftop paths above a wild, largely untouched shoreline, eventually descending to Zavial Beach, a sheltered bay perfect for a relaxed farewell lunch. Those preferring a slower morning may rest at the hotel before meeting the group later. In the afternoon, we transfer back to Lisbon, where our journey along Portugal’s dramatic Atlantic coast comes to an end.

We recently took the Atlantic Coast Short Break tour, hiking the Atlantic coast of Portugal and visiting the sights of Sintra and surroundings. We were recommended the guide by two sets of friends who did two separate trips, and we will recommend this to keep this chain going. The combination of outdoors, culture, history, and food made the trip densely packed and perfectly balanced. Our guide, Manuel, was a walking encyclopedia. He fielded questions with knowledge from a wide breadth of topics. There was much discussion on native and invasive plants, since this is an interest of my wife. Manuel was very patient with my history questions as I tried to sort out the sequence of invaders that included Romans, Moors, Spanish, French, etc. He was even well-versed on Portuguese literature (fiction, non-fiction, and poetry) to fill any gaps for us after the trip. We had a great time!
A truly memorable adventure! From start to finish, the Portugal Coastal Hiking Tour was everything I hoped for. As a first-time visitor to Portugal (and Europe), our guides took excellent care of all of us, we stayed in beautiful accommodations, ate amazing food like there was no tomorrow, and hiked on trails in spectacular areas on the coast. We had just enough on-our-own time for strolling villages, and our hiking was carefully mixed in with visits to unique historical sites, and all the way along, our knowledgeable guides gave us information geological, historical, biological, and cultural. Amazing vacation!
This Spring I took a trip along the coast of Portugal, not really knowing what it would be like. Before the trip I was worried about the availability of showers after hiking. I needn’t have worried. All the accommodations, meals and logistics were first class. We finished every day in a very comfortable hotel. The meals were wonderful and, region by region, the guides showed us the local cuisine and wines. They were generous with both.
The coast of Portugal is magnificent and left me with good memories of our walks. But what made the trip truly fantastic were the guides. They knew the history, culture, regional differences, geology, plants and birds. They took us on beautiful hikes and showed us how the parts we saw fit into the larger picture of coastal history and geology. Best of all was just hiking in their company. The starting point of your Portugal coastal hiking tour is Lisbon. To get there, most people fly into Lisbon Airport (LIS). From there, you can take a shuttle service or public transport to reach downtown Lisbon.
You will meet your guide on the morning of Day 1 in Lisbon. Please note that the accommodation prior to Day 1 is up to you.
