What do people think of Portugal Walking & Hiking Tours?
Martha Schrader

One of our most memorable trips with our kids.

k.kirk.silva

We enjoyed every minute of it. Very well organized. Easy walking in low lying coastal Algarve, staying in the same hotel throughout. We enjoyed having the same driver, Antonio, for airport transfers and journeys to the start of daily walks.

David Langley

I have done two trips to Portugal with PGT – DMC and they were outstanding both times. Great choices of hotels and food, guides who thoroughly know their stuff, and all details taken care of so that I could focus on enjoying the experience. I recommend them wholeheartedly!

Mariana Novaes

I have already had the opportunity to participate in two tours organized by the company and both experiences were great. I can have fun, walk around and learn a little more about the history and culture of Portugal. Extremely serious, creative, dedicated and passionate professionals in what they do. I highly recommend it.

Frequently asked questions about our Portugal walking & hiking tours

  • Yes, Portugal is a fantastic destination for hiking and walking trips!

You’ll find a wide range of trails that cater to all levels of experience. The country boasts diverse landscapes, from dramatic coastal cliffs and sandy beaches to rugged mountains and lush forests. Here are some highlights:

    1. Coastal Hikes

      • Rota Vicentina: A network of trails along the southwestern coast, including the famous Fishermen’s Trail, with stunning views of cliffs, beaches, and traditional fishing villages.
      • Algarve: Known for its beautiful coastline, the Algarve offers hikes with dramatic sea vistas, including the popular Seven Hanging Valleys Trail.

    2. Mountain Hikes

      • Madeira: A hiker’s paradise with its levada walks (irrigation channels) and challenging mountain hikes like the Pico do Arieiro to Pico Ruivo trail.
      • Serra da Estrela: Portugal’s highest mountain range on the mainland offers a variety of trails, including those leading to Torre, the highest peak.

    3. National Parks

      • Peneda-Gerês National Park: Portugal’s only national park in the north. You’ll find diverse trails through ancient forests, waterfalls, and traditional villages.

    4. Islands

      • Azores: The Azores archipelago will treat you to volcanic landscapes, crater lakes, and lush green scenery. The Sete Cidades hike on São Miguel Island is particularly popular.

    5. Cultural and Historical Hikes

      • Sintra: Near Lisbon, Sintra offers forested trails that lead to historic sites like the Moorish Castle and Pena Palace, blending nature with history.
Portugal’s mild climate allows for year-round hiking, with spring and autumn being particularly pleasant. Plus, many trails are well-marked and accessible.
  • The Pico do Arieiro to Pico Ruivo hike in Madeira is arguably the most famous hike in Portugal.

This trail connects two of the island’s highest peaks, with soaring views of the mountainous landscape. The hike is challenging, with plenty of steep ascents, tunnels, and ridges, but push through and you’ll be rewarded with dramatic scenery, including especially spectacular sunrise views.

  • The Rota Vicentina is the longest hiking trail in Portugal.

The trail stretches over 450 kilometers (about 280 miles) along the southwestern coast, from Santiago do Cacém to Cabo de São Vicente. This trail is divided into the Historical Way and the Fishermen’s Trail, offering diverse landscapes, including coastal cliffs, sandy beaches, and rural countryside. It can be hiked in sections, which makes it doable for hikers of varying skill levels.

  • While you might not always need heavy hiking boots, especially if you’re planning on doing Portuguese walking holidays sturdy footwear is recommended depending on the terrain and trail difficulty:

      • Mountain and rugged trails (e.g., Pico Ruivo, Peneda-Gerês): Hiking boots with good ankle support and grip are advisable, especially for rocky or uneven paths.
      • Coastal trails (e.g., Rota Vicentina): You might get away with sturdy hiking shoes or trail runners, but boots are still recommended if you plan on covering longer distances or if the terrain is rocky.
      • Urban and easier trails (e.g., Sintra, levada walks in Madeira): Comfortable hiking shoes or even sneakers with good tread should suffice.
  • The best months to plan your Portugal hiking tours are April to June and September to October. During these months:

      • Spring (April to June): The weather is mild, and the landscapes are lush and blooming, especially in regions like the Azores and Madeira.
      • Autumn (September to October): The temperatures are cooler after the summer heat, which makes longer hikes more comfortable, particularly in inland areas like the Algarve or Serra da Estrela.

Avoiding the peak summer months (July and August) is wise, especially for coastal or exposed trails, as temperatures can get very hot. Winter can be rainy in some regions, though Madeira and the Algarve remain relatively mild.
