This self-guided Dolomites hiking trip is all about big views without the usual hassle. Based in the Carezza area, you’ll explore the dramatic landscapes of the Latemar and Rosengarten massifs on a series of varied day hikes, from high balcony trails and rocky passes to forest paths and alpine lakes. Each day brings something different, but the rhythm stays simple: head out with a light daypack, follow well-planned routes, and return to the same base each evening. With routes, logistics, and navigation taken care of, you’re free to focus on the scenery, the trail, and the experience, with hearty breakfasts and great regional dinners waiting for you each day.

Day 1: Arrival in Nova Levante
Nova Levante in Dolomites

You arrive in Nova Levante, your base for the entire trip. After checking in (2 pm onwards), the rest of the day is yours to settle in, take in the fresh alpine air, and ease into the rhythm of the Dolomites. As the light softens, the surrounding peaks begin to glow, setting the tone for what’s to come. In the evening, you sit down to your first taste of the region and get ready for the days ahead.

Day 2: Rosengarten
Rifugio Paolina in Dolomites

You kick things off with a panoramic day beneath the towering Rosengarten cliffs. After a short bus ride, you take a cable car up to Rifugio Paolina (not included in the price) and step straight into high alpine terrain. Following the UNESCO Geo-Trail, you hike beneath dramatic rock walls toward Rifugio Rosengarten, then climb to Col de la Coronelle for sweeping views. The route continues across high passes and airy balcony trails before descending back to Rifugio Paolina. From here, you take the cable car down (not included in the price) and return to your hotel by bus.

After a short bus ride to Passo Costalunga, you set out on a loop around Mount Gronton, following rugged trails through rocky terrain and steady climbs with wide-open views. As you circle back, the landscape shifts into the surreal Latemar labyrinth, a maze of stone and scree with constant views of the Rosengarten. The day finishes on a softer note, descending through forest to Lago di Carezza, where emerald waters mirror the surrounding peaks. Take your time here before returning to your hotel by bus.

After a short transfer to Niger Pass, you hike up to Rifugio Haniger, perfectly positioned beneath the jagged Rosengarten peaks. From here, the trail rolls through wide alpine meadows toward Plafötsch Alm, a traditional mountain hut surrounded by open views. The route then descends to San Cipriano before a final climb brings you back to Niger Pass. A private transfer returns you to your hotel, wrapping up a full and rewarding day in the mountains.

  • This Dolomites self-guided hiking tour is best suited for hikers with a good level of fitness. The trails are not technically demanding, but you should feel comfortable walking for several hours a day on varied terrain, including rocky sections, forest paths, and alpine trails.

    You’ll be hiking up to 14.8 km (9.2 mi) and 7 hours per day, with up to 915 m (3,010 ft) of elevation gain. Some days include steady climbs and longer descents, but nothing overly technical or exposed.

    What makes this trip flexible is the range of options available. Many days offer shorter routes, alternative paths, or the possibility to use cable cars (not included in the price), so you can easily adjust the effort to match how you’re feeling.

  • Clothing:

      • Hiking boots/shoes — waterproof, sturdy molded sole, deep tread and ideally well broken in
      • Hiking socks — one pair for every day or two days of the trip (hiking/sport specific padded socks, no cotton please)
      • Sun hat — wide brimmed hat or baseball cap/bandana combo
      • Warm hat & gloves — lightweight beanie and light-to-mid weight fleece or wool gloves
      • Hiking shirts — non-cotton, breathable short sleeve and/or long sleeve shirts
      • Warm top — mid-weight sweater or pullover of wicking material such as merino wool, fleece or polypropylene
      • Insulating jacket — down-fill or synthetic-fill insulated “puffy” jacket or warm, heavy weight fleece jacket
      • Hiking pants & shorts — nylon pants and shorts, zip-offs or leggings
      • Base layer/long underwear — 1 pair of wicking tops and bottoms that are lightweight to midweight, synthetic wicking materials such as polyester, polypropylene, merino wool, etc.
      • Rain gear — waterproof jacket and pants or high-quality poncho, breathable fabric such as Gore-Tex® or coated nylon (for the pants look for side zippers that will easily allow pulling them over footwear)
      • Casual clothing & footwear – comfortable clothes and shoes to wear in the evening after activities.

      • Backpack — a 30–45 liter sized comfortable pack with a waterproof cover for use day-to-day while hiking
      • Personal luggage — small duffel bag, rolling suitcase or backpack
      • Hydration system — 2+ liters capacity, either water bottles or bladder/hose system and an additional water bottle
      • Trekking poles — telescopic/adjustable poles to help reduce the impact on joints and support hikers in steep and/or rocky terrain (strongly recommended)
      • Headlamp — preferably with an L.E.D. bulb that works with AA or AAA batteries
      • Picnic/lunch kit — knife, plate or bowl, box with closeable lid, utensils, etc.
      • Phone, charger, power bank

By joining this Dolomites self-guided hiking tour, we take care of lodging, breakfasts and dinners, private transfers to and from Niger Pass, telephone support, and more. 

    Rather than joining a guided group, you’ll navigate the tour yourself, using resources provided by the tour operator. For a hassle-free journey with everything arranged for you in advance, there’s no better option!

    Digital travel package includes documents available in English, French, and German, sent by email, and provides access to a smartphone travel application for navigating hikes and accessing local maps (available in English only). It also contains the list of booked accommodations, and all the detailed information needed for a successful trip. If desired, a printed version of the travel package can be provided for an additional fee; it will be ready and available at the first accommodation of the itinerary, including maps, a topo guide, and a travel folder—you can add this at checkout.

    As a self-guided tour is built around your preferred travel dates, your guide will take care of arranging accommodations and details after you book.   • Group sizes and pricing

    • It takes a minimum of 2 people for this tour to operate. The maximum group size is set at 8 participants.

    Min. age requirements

    • If you are older than 18, you’re good to go.
    • Minors younger than 18 may be permitted to join the Dolomites self-guided hiking tour on a case-by-case basis, but must be in the presence of a parent or legal guardian.

    If your group has participants under the age of 18, contact us prior to booking to make arrangements.

  • The price for this Dolomites self-guided hiking tour is based on twin-share rooms, but a single occupancy room can be arranged at an additional fee. You can add it to your booking at checkout.

  • The starting point of your Dolomites self-guided hiking tour is Nova Levante. To get there, most people fly into Bolzano Airport (BZO), Innsbruck Airport (INN), or Verona Airport (VRN). From there, you can take a train or a bus, or rent a car to reach Nova Levante.

    Check-in at the hotel is from 2 pm onwards.

    Booking fees are non-refundable after a 48-hour grace period. During checkout, however, you can choose one of 57hours’ flexibility options—Basic, Flexible, or Super Flexible. Depending on which one you choose, a different cancellation policy will apply to your booking.

      • If cancelled within 48 hours of booking, a full refund will be issued.
      • If cancelled 90 or more days before departure, a 70% refund of the total trip price will be issued.
      • If cancelled within 89 days of departure, no refund will be issued.
