Expect to be on the trail for 4 to 6 hours per day, covering between 8.6 and 14 km ( 5.3 to 8.7 mi ). The most demanding day brings 750 m ( 2,461 ft ) of elevation gain on Malga Mondent Alta, right on Day 1 after the transfer from Milan. Day 5 offers a welcome rest with a mostly flat lakeside walk around Lago di Ledro. Trekking poles are recommended. We spend the first half of this guided hiking week deep in the Brenta Dolomites above Trento, working through high pastures, ridgelines, and up to a mountain hut tucked beneath sheer limestone walls. Then we cross south to Riva del Garda, where the terrain eases into olive groves and lakeside trails, and the week builds to Monte Altissimo di Nago. From its summit, Lago di Garda spreads out in full Mediterranean blue, Italy’s largest lake framed by a fjord-like sweep of hillsides and lakeside towns. Pine forests give way to open ridgelines. Ridgelines give way to summits. And summits in the Brenta Dolomites above Trento give way to views that feel almost architectural: grey limestone spires rising from alpine meadows like something designed, not formed. We spend the first half of this guided hiking week up here, climbing through some of Italy's most dramatic scenery with a local expert who knows every trail. Then we transfer to Riva del Garda, and Monte Altissimo di Nago changes everything. One summit, and the whole of Lago di Garda appears below: Italy's largest lake, impossibly blue, ringed by olive groves, warm in a way the Dolomites never quite manage. Small group of 8, comfy hotels with breakfast, and an expert guide, all included.

Day 1: Arrival in Trento and into the Brenta Dolomites

We transfer from Milan to Trento, then head straight into the Brenta Dolomites on the route to Malga Mondent Alta. The trail traverses ridgelines and high-altitude pastures where local shepherds graze their livestock in summer, with the iconic vertical rock faces and spires that make this mountain range unlike anything else in Europe shifting perspective at every turn. It’s a lighter introduction to the terrain, easing us in gently after a full day of travel.

Day 2: The spirit of Mt. Agnello

We tackle a steady ascent up Mount Agnello, climbing through ancient woodland before the trees give way to open grassy slopes and switchbacks that ease the gradient. The climb is continuous but manageable, and as we near the summit the landscape opens dramatically: a full 360-degree panorama of jagged peaks and deep-cut valleys in every direction.

Day 3: Into the heart of the Brenta massif

We start the day on the shores of Lago di Molveno, taking a cable car up to the Pradel plateau to save our legs for the climb ahead. From the top station, a trail carved straight into the rock face leads us deep into the heart of the Brenta massif, ending at Rifugio Croz dell’Altissimo, a mountain hut tucked beneath towering limestone walls. After a break taking in the scale of the rock faces, we descend back to Molveno entirely on foot.

Day 4: Tre Cime del Bondone and transfer to Riva del Garda

We tackle the Tre Cime del Bondone loop, climbing through fragrant pine and fir forest before opening onto alpine meadows dotted with wildflowers. The final stretch delivers a panoramic sweep over the Adige Valley, the city of Trento, and the rugged grey spires of the Brenta Dolomites in the distance. After descending, we transfer south to Riva del Garda, where the Mediterranean climate takes over.

Day 5: Lago di Ledro's shoreline

We walk around Lago di Ledro, a glacial lake tucked into the mountains above Garda. The trail winds along the forested shoreline and passes the Pile-Dwelling Museum, a UNESCO World Heritage site preserving remnants of prehistoric lakeside settlements. The afternoon is free to explore Riva del Garda, stroll the promenade, or relax by the hotel pool.

Day 6: Monte Altissimo di Nago

Monte Altissimo di Nago is the most celebrated summit in the northern Lago di Garda area. We climb through olive groves and small hilltop villages before the trail opens onto the exposed upper slopes. From the top, the entire northern lake basin spreads out in its striking fjord-like shape, with terraced hillsides, lakeside towns, and mountains plunging into the water below.

For the first three nights we stay at Hotel al Dos in Trento: a comfortable hotel with daily buffet breakfast and easy access to the Brenta Dolomites trailheads.

From Day 4, things get considerably more scenic. Ecohotel Primavera in Riva del Garda is an eco-certified property built entirely from certified wood and natural materials, with elegant rooms featuring private balconies, Italian sheets, and great showers.
