Line of hikers on a narrow path across a steep grassy slope below jagged rocky peaks in Dolomites

The Original Dolomites Crossing: Alta Via 1 & 2 Hut-to-Hut Trek

Most hikers pick one Alta Via and spend two weeks on it. We take the best of both and fit them into 6 days. Starting on the Alta Via 1, we hike past Lake Coldai and the 1,200-meter (3,937-foot) wall of the Civetta. Then we cross the Moiazza range, a quiet stretch most trekkers miss, and finish on the Alta Via 2 beneath the Marmolada, the highest peak in the Dolomites. It’s three of the range’s biggest sights in one trek, without the time and planning of a full Alta Via. Our bags travel ahead, the rifugios handle dinner, and we start and end at a spa hotel.

Adventure Highlights

  • Two legendary routes, one crossing: We link the Alta Via 1 and Alta Via 2 in a single trek, from Civetta’s “Wall of Walls” to the south face of the Marmolada
  • Sleep under the giants: three nights in historic high-mountain huts, including one at the foot of the Marmolada’s 1,000 m (3,281 ft) wall
  • Light pack, easy logistics: private transfers from Venice, a mid-trek luggage swap, spa hotels at the start & end, & your bags waiting at the finish

The adventure, day by day

We meet at Venice airport and transfer into Selva di Cadore for a first night and a welcome dinner below Mount Pelmo. Day 2 climbs through Val Fiorentina to Coldai Lake and traverses the Civetta's north-west face. Day 3 crosses the wilder Moiazza range, and on Day 4 we drop to the valley for lunch, swap luggage, and transfer to the Marmolada side. The final walking day follows the old Shepherd's Way over a 2,490 m (8,169 ft) pass to San Pellegrino Pass, where a spa and a gala dinner are waiting. A private transfer returns us to Venice on Day 6.

Day 1: Arrival in the UNESCO heart and welcome dinner
Two cows with ear tags and a bell graze on an alpine meadow below a rocky peak at sunset in Dolomites

Arrive at Venice Marco Polo Airport, where our driver meets the group for the private van transfer up to Selva di Cadore, right in the middle of the UNESCO World Heritage Dolomites. It’s about two hours and 140 km (87 mi) of steadily better scenery. Check into the hotel, step outside, and you’ve got Mount Pelmo, the Civetta, and the spires of Cernera lined up in front of you. Before dinner, your host and hands you a 40-liter backpack, trekking poles, and a sleeping bag liner for the days ahead. Then it’s a first dinner together, with a full guide briefing in the morning.

Meals: Dinner
Accommodation: Spa hotel in Selva di Cadore

Day 2: Into the giant's realm: Coldai Lake and the Wall of Walls
Wooden trail signs for two huts and a closed dangerous path, with rocky slope and cliffs behind in Dolomites

After breakfast and the briefing, we walk straight out of the hotel and start climbing through the conifer forests and pastures of Val Fiorentina. On the Col dei Baldi ridge the view opens up in every direction: the Marmolada glacier, Croda da Lago, and Mount Pelmo keeping an eye on us. We join a spectacular variant of the Alta Via 1 and stop at a historic hut for a traditional lunch, then a short climb brings us to the turquoise Lake Coldai at 2,172 m (7,126 ft). The afternoon traverses the base of the “Wall of Walls”, the Civetta’s northwest face, 1,200 m (3,937 ft) high and 5 km (3.1 mi) wide. Tonight we sleep right in front of it.

Meals: Breakfast, dinner
Distance: 15 km (9.3 mi)
Elevation: +1,300 m (+4,265 ft) / -480 m (-1,575 ft)
Accommodation: High-altitude mountain hut, 4-bed dorms

Day 3: The wild heart of the Moiazza range
Green alpine lake with clear shallows and rocky shore below mossy slopes and steep limestone cliffs in Dolomites

Today we leave the busier trails behind and cross into the Moiazza range, where it’s mostly just us, the rock, and the silence. We begin with an easy descent into Val Civetta, winding past ancient rock, alpine shrubs, and green pastures, with the towers of the Civetta massif looming over us the whole way. A hut tucked into the woodland makes the perfect refreshment stop, and the views from there of Torre Venezia and Torre Trieste are the stuff of climbing legend. From there we push on to Forcella Col dell’Orso at 1,823 m (5,981 ft) and follow the flanks of the towers before a last climb through pine forest to our hut, dinner, and the peaks turning pink at sunset.

Meals: Breakfast, dinner
Distance: 15 km (9.3 mi)
Elevation: +720 m (+2,362 ft) / -1,100 m (-3,609 ft)
Accommodation: High-altitude mountain hut, shared dorms

Day 4: The great crossing toward the Marmolada
Sunlit orange limestone cliff and jagged ridge above a scree slope, with a pale moon in a blue sky in Dolomites

After a hearty breakfast, we drop down a long panoramic descent to the valley floor, where our driver meets us with your main luggage. Swap in clean clothes, then settle in for a relaxed lunch in the valley before a short private transfer takes us to the start of the next stage. From there we walk into the enchanting Valle Ombretta, where the south face of the Marmolada, the Queen of the Dolomites, takes over the horizon. Along the way we pass the totem marking the exact geographical center of the Dolomites UNESCO site. Tonight we sleep in a historic refuge right under the Marmolada’s 1,000 m silver wall.

Meals: Breakfast, dinner
Distance: 14 km (8.7 mi), about 5 hours of hiking
Elevation: +650 m (+2,133 ft) / -1,100 m (-3,609 ft)
Transfer: 32 km (20 mi), about 40 minutes
Accommodation: Historic mountain hut at the foot of the Marmolada, shared dorms

Day 5: Alpine meadows and the Shepherd's Way
Hikers with backpacks walk a misty slope covered in yellow, white and blue wildflowers in Dolomites

Our last full day on the trail starts at the base of the silver walls, climbing steadily to a high pass at 2,490 m (8,169 ft). The views over the surrounding massifs from up there are the kind you stand still for. We then drop down the old High Shepherd’s Way, a quiet path through centuries-old woodland and high pastures where marmots and ibex are regular company. While we walk, the team moves your main luggage ahead, so your bags are in your room when you reach Passo San Pellegrino. Saunas, sensory showers, and hot baths await, then a gala dinner to toast the week. Your guide says goodbye here.

Meals: Breakfast, dinner
Distance: 17 km (10.6 mi), about 7 hours of hiking
Elevation: +800 m (+2,625 ft) / -1,100 m (-3,609 ft)
Accommodation: Spa hotel at Passo San Pellegrino

Day 6: Arrivederci Dolomites
Wood-clad and stone mountain hotel above a meadow of yellow flowers, with rocky peaks behind in Dolomites

Enjoy one more relaxed breakfast with the peaks in the window. Your driver will meet you at the hotel for a comfortable, scenic private transfer back down the valley and on to Venice Marco Polo Airport, timed for your onward flight. The exact pick-up time is confirmed with you the day before, with arrival at the airport estimated by about 1 pm, traffic depending. Arrivederci!

Meals: Breakfast
Transfer: 160 km (99 mi), about 2.5 hours

This trip exceeded all expectations. Our trip felt like it was designed by a local, because it was. Miki has a deep love for her home in the Dolomities and she takes great pride in providing the most authentic experience for her guests. Along the way, we ran into more locals enjoying the region than tourists. She’s selectively chosen charming and well-appointed accommodations in places you would have been unlikely to choose yourself. Guides are experts in the activity of the day, they provided an education about the region as well as guidance and support throughout the day. The days were intentionally paced – coffee/snack and lunch stops all in picturesque locations, providing multi-course menu options that embody the local cuisine. The scenery was dramatic and jaw-droppingly beautiful. All details were coordinated and communicated clearly and often for you, leaving you the ability to just enjoy. Overall, it was a trip that I will take with me for a lifetime.

We just had the most incredible time being guided around one of the most beautiful places in the world. The hikes were challenging but really well balanced and we got to see such a variety of scenes all of which are mind blowing – amazing peaks and stunning walls through to beautiful pine forests and green valleys. Every day was different and amazing. The Refugios were also pretty incredible – food was amazing! Our guide Chiara was absolutely great, taught us all about the place as we went along but also was just amazing about reading the group and stopping for rest and photos. Finally the group was incredible – we all made lots of new memories with new friends. Could not recommend this enough.

I found the experience to be brilliant. The schedule was thorough and well thought out. The host was approachable and accommodating. The places to stay were beautiful and amazing food (breakfast and dinner) also were included.
The host was able to make adaptions depending on suitability. I would highly recommend this trip for people who love outdoors and a good level of fitness.

Expect four full trekking days of roughly 5 to 7 hours on the trail, with long descents of up to 1,100 m (3,609 ft) that ask as much of your legs as the climbs do. You’ll carry a 40-liter pack with what you need for the days and the huts, since your main luggage is moved for you until day 4 mid-trek. Trekking poles are provided and they make a real difference on the steeper sections.

Want to see what else is there in the area? Discover our collection of Dolomites hiking tours!

  • Your host provide a 40-liter backpack, trekking poles, and a sleeping bag liner, so you don’t need to bring those. For the hut nights you only carry what you need on the trail, and your main bag travels separately.

    Luggage:

      • One duffle bag or soft suitcase as your main luggage, max. 15-23 kg (33-51 lbs) per person for the transfers

      • Waterproof rain jacket and rain pants
      • Insulating layer (fleece or light down jacket) for cool evenings at altitude
      • Hiking pants or shorts and quick-dry shirts

      • Toiletries (sunscreen, lip balm, hand sanitizer, bug spray)
      • Personal first aid kit and any medication you need
      • Cash, since the mountain huts can’t always take cards for lunches, drinks, and shower tokens
      • Phone with WhatsApp to stay in touch with your host and the group

Dress comfortably and for the weather in clothes you can move in. We suggest bringing clothing appropriate for the season. Layers are best and don’t wear jeans.

  • Your guides recommend bringing one duffel bag or soft suitcase per person on this Dolomites Alta Via 1 & 2 trek, weighing no more than 15–23 kg (33–51 lbs). Your main luggage is stored once the trek starts and handed back to you in Agordo on Day 4 for a quick gear swap. It’s then taken ahead to Passo San Pellegrino and will be waiting for you at the hotel on Day 5.

If you’re traveling with extra luggage, for example on a longer trip, your guides suggest using the left luggage service at Venice Airport for the duration of the trek.

  • Group sizes and pricing:

      • This Dolomites Alta Via 1 & 2 trek runs on set departure dates with a small group led by an expert, local, English-speaking senior mountain guide.
