Luxury Annapurna Trek in Nepal: Gurung Heritage Trail

Gurung villages don’t get much more storybook than Ghandruk and Landruk, stone houses stacked into hillsides with Annapurna South and Machapuchare filling the skyline behind them. We’ll spend 9 days in Nepal, weaving through both, trading Kathmandu’s temple bells for terraced fields and rhododendron forest, then trading the trail for lodges built for exactly this kind of comfort. Porters carry the weight, a private vehicle handles the transfers, and a guide who’s walked this route over a hundred times handles everything else.

Adventure Highlights

  • Big peaks, bigger comfort: Trek past Machapuchare and Annapurna South, then unwind in luxury lodges with hot showers and gourmet meals
  • Gurung culture, up close: Walk through stone-built Gurung villages, visit the Ghandruk museum, and experience a traditional dance performance
  • Zero logistics: Permits, transfers, lodging, and porters are all sorted in advance

The adventure, day by day

We trade the standard teahouse trek for something a little more comfortable, without losing a step of what makes the Annapurna region worth walking through. Nine days in Nepal take us from Kathmandu's temples and stupas to the Gurung heartland of Ghandruk and Landruk, along trails lined with rhododendron forest and terraced fields, with Machapuchare and Annapurna South rarely out of view. Porters carry the load, a guide who's completed this trek over a hundred times leads the way, and every night ends in a proper bed with a hot shower and a good meal. Add a lakeside stay in Pokhara and a full day of Kathmandu sightseeing, and this becomes less a trek and more a complete introduction to Nepal, minus the parts that usually wear people down.

Day 1: Arrival in Kathmandu
Kathmandu arrival

Upon arrival in Kathmandu, you’ll settle into a 5-star hotel. This first day is all about resetting after the flight and adjusting to the time zone before the trip properly begins, since the city has a rhythm of its own compared to the quiet trail days ahead.

Meals: Breakfast
Accommodation: 5-star hotel, Kathmandu

Day 2: Kathmandu heritage sites and Thamel evening
Monkey temple in Kathmandu

We spend the day exploring Kathmandu’s UNESCO World Heritage Sites, including the Swayambhunath Stupa, also known as the Monkey Temple, the Boudhanath Stupa, and Kathmandu Durbar Square. Each stop adds a different layer to the city’s cultural history, from Buddhist architecture to royal palace complexes. The evening is free, with an optional dinner in Thamel to try traditional Nepali dishes before we head for the mountains.

Meals: Breakfast
Accommodation: 5-star hotel, Kathmandu

Day 3: Pokhara and trek to Birethanti
Birethanti trek

We travel to Pokhara, then continue by private vehicle to Dhawa before hiking around 3 hours to Birethanti, right on the edge of the Annapurna Conservation Area. It’s a small, friendly village that marks the true start of the trek, and we settle into our first mountain lodge as the Himalayas start to feel a lot closer.

Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner
Accommodation: Luxury lodge, Birethanti

Day 4: Trek to Ghandruk
Ghandruk Nepal

The trail to Ghandruk winds through terraced rice fields and dense forest, where Himalayan tahr and various birds are often spotted along the way. As we climb, the Annapurna Range and Machapuchare’s fishtail peak start to reveal themselves. After 5 to 6 hours of trekking, we reach Ghandruk, a Gurung village known for its stone architecture and mountain views, with time in the evening to visit the Gurung Museum and learn about local customs and heritage.

Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner
Hiking: 5-6 hrs
Elevation: 1,940 m (6,365 ft)
Accommodation: Luxury lodge, Ghandruk

Day 5: Trek to Landruk
Landruk in Nepal

We descend from Ghandruk through rhododendron forest, past waterfalls and small farming communities, reaching Landruk after around 5 hours on the trail. Landruk is another traditional Gurung village, known for its terraced fields and sweeping views of the Annapurna Massif. The evening often includes a traditional Nepali meal and, when available, a local cultural dance performance.

Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner
Hiking: 5 hrs
Accommodation: Luxury lodge, Landruk

Day 6: Trek to Majhgaon
Annapurna conservation area

Today’s trail is gentler, winding through bamboo and rhododendron forest deeper into the Annapurna Conservation Area, crossing small rivers and streams along the way. After about 4 hours, we reach Majhgaon, a small village perched on the valley slopes with wide views over the surrounding hills, a quieter setting that makes for a more intimate look at local life.

Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner
Hiking: 4 hrs
Accommodation: Luxury lodge, Majhgaon

Day 7: Trek back to Pokhara
Phewa lake

The final trekking day takes us back toward Pokhara through forest, terraced fields, and small villages, taking around 5 to 6 hours. Once we arrive, we check into a luxury hotel and have the rest of the day free, whether that means a boat ride on Phewa Lake, a visit to the World Peace Pagoda, or just a slow wander along the lakeside.

Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner
Hiking: 5-6 hrs
Accommodation: Luxury hotel, Pokhara

Day 8: Fly or drive back to Kathmandu
Stupa in Kathmandu

We return to Kathmandu, either by a scenic flight over the Himalayas and Nepal’s rolling hills, or by road. The rest of the day is free for last-minute shopping in Thamel, relaxing at the hotel, or a farewell dinner featuring a mix of Nepali and international cuisine, with a final briefing from our guide before departure.

Meals: Breakfast
Accommodation: 5-star hotel, Kathmandu

Day 9: Departure from Kathmandu
Kathmandu aerial

We booked the Annapurna circuit trek, and the views the whole way were incredible. Narayan was so knowledgeable, helpful, friendly & made our trip so much fun! We truly couldn’t have asked for a better guide or porter. Would highly recommend both of them, so please request them by name if you have the opportunity! Thanks for making our first trip to Nepal so special!

They patiently answer all the questions. Lots of support before and during the track. Everything went smoothly. Even when something goes not according to the initial schedule – they adjust to the current situation and offer the best option.
