Greenland Hiking Tours

Ice-free tundra, glaciers the size of small countries, and trails where you're more likely to spot a musk ox than another hiker.

Off the map, on foot

Not your typical hiking destination

Forget everything you picture when you hear “Greenland.” Much of its coast is actually ice-free in summer—tundra, wildflowers, rivers you’ll wade through more than once. It’s a strange, striking landscape most people never expect.

What you’ll actually run into out there:

    • Musk oxen, arctic foxes, and reindeer, often closer than you’d think
    • Icebergs the size of buildings, drifting past your camp or your kayak
    • Rivers with names you can’t pronounce, crossed the old-fashioned way—on foot

West vs. East: pick your Greenland

West Greenland is the easier entry point. Kangerlussuaq and Nuuk have real infrastructure at either end, and trails like the Arctic Circle Trail let you get seriously remote without needing a boat to do it.

East Greenland is another level entirely. Reached through Kulusuk or Tasiilaq, it’s sparsely populated and largely boat-dependent—which is exactly why hikers who’ve already done the west keep circling back for it.

Guides, gear, and everything in between

Getting yourself to Greenland already takes some planning. Once you land, that’s where your job ends.

Your guides know this terrain inside out, whether that’s years spent leading expeditions across these exact fjords or a career built on Arctic trekking elsewhere. That knowledge isn’t a nice-to-have out here, it’s the whole reason things run smoothly. They’re the ones who know which river crossing to tackle at 7am while the current’s still gentle, where the musk oxen tend to graze, and how to rework a route on the fly when the weather turns, which, out here, it does more often than not.

From there, they take care of the rest of it too:

    • Tents, huts, or a boat cabin, depending on the route
    • Meals, cooked over a camp stove or plated on deck
    • Boat transfers between fjords that no road will ever reach
    • Permits, safety gear, and satellite communication for the truly remote stretches

You show up. They handle the logistics of moving a group through some of the least forgiving terrain on the planet. All that’s left for you to do is hike.

How much suffering do you want?

Not every trip here demands a 20 kg pack and a 13-day trek. Some genuinely don’t:

    • Basecamp-style trips with sauna tents and paddleboarding between hikes
    • Multi-day expeditions with real daily mileage and wild camping every night
    • Sail-and-hike combos, splitting your days between deck and trail
    • Women-only departures, for a different kind of group dynamic

Whatever your appetite, there’s a version of Greenland built for it.

We loved the trek from Karale to Tasiilaq fjord. It was challenging but deeply rewarding, and we came away feeling changed. “Greenland showed me things about my life,” I now say and my husband agrees. He credits the trip for helping him make a long overdue decision to go back to university.

Frequently Asked Questions About Hiking in Greenland

  • Yes—every trip here is led by an experienced guide well-versed in Greenland’s terrain, weather, and wildlife. Beyond navigation and safety, they’re your best shot at spotting musk oxen or finding the right wild camping spot before dark.

  • Depends on the trip. Guide, accommodation, and most meals are usually covered. What’s typically not included:

      • International flights
      • Alcohol
      • Travel and medical insurance

Always check the individual trip page before booking, since the specifics shift from tour to tour.

  • This varies a lot depending on the trip. Some tours cap daily hiking at a manageable 5-8 km, fine for most people with a decent fitness base. Others expect you to carry a heavy pack for hours at a time or cover 20+ km on uneven terrain with real elevation gain. If you’ve never done multi-day trekking before, start with something moderate; if you’re chasing a genuine expedition, Greenland has that waiting for you too. Check the difficulty rating on each trip page to see where it falls.

  • West: Easier flights (Kangerlussuaq, Nuuk), established trails, huts and tents.

East: Reached via Kulusuk or Tasiilaq. Boats are often the only way in. Days can pass without seeing anyone outside your group.

    Same country, genuinely different trips.

  • June through early September, no real exceptions—that’s the ice-free window, and it’s when practically all of these tours run. Late August into September also gives you your best shot at the Northern Lights, weather permitting.

  • Good odds, though nothing’s promised. On land: musk oxen, arctic foxes, reindeer, snow hares. On the water: whales, seals, sometimes narwhals. Guides know where sightings tend to cluster, but Greenland’s animals don’t check anyone’s itinerary.
