Icefjord Hiking Adventure in Greenland

Seven days. That’s all it takes to fall in love with Greenland’s wilderness. Hike across landscapes so untouched they might as well be from another planet. Set up camp beside astounding icefjords, climb mountains with views that punch through the clouds, and fish in crystal-clear lakes where Arctic char swim free. Feel the Arctic air on your face as you forage for dinner ingredients like a modern Viking. Take a dip in a lake that’s as ancient as Viking lore or stroll its shores in the midnight sun. Each trail will lead us to something extraordinary, and every night will be a fireside celebration of this wild, untamed place. Greenland doesn’t do subtle—and neither should we.

Itinerary

Immerse yourself in Greenland’s untamed beauty on this 7-day hiking adventure. From icefjord shores to mountain summits, we’ll traverse rugged trails where wildlife roams free and history whispers in the Arctic breeze. We’ll camp beneath vast skies, fish for Arctic char, and brave the chill of glacier-fed lakes. Each step brings us closer to Greenland’s raw wilderness, with opportunities to forage wild ingredients, spot reindeer, and discover the secrets of this otherworldly land.

  • The tour begins with a 2-hour transfer from Nuuk to Kapisillit in a cabin boat. This is not just a boat ride, it’s a boat ride through the world’s second largest fjord system in the world. If we are lucky, we might see whales, seals, and different kinds of seabirds.

We will dock in the inner bay of Kapisillit (Kangerlupiluk), and from there, we will hike towards our basecamp on pretty even terrain to our camping spot, which will be on a peninsula by the beautiful icefjord (Kangersuneq). The rest of the day will be used to settle in and soak in the scenery.

    Meals: Lunch, dinner
    Hiking: 3 km / 1.8 miles, 1-2 hours
    Accommodation: Tent

    Boat ride in Greenland
  • After breakfast, we will pack a day pack and go hiking towards the mountain massif Niggu. We will seek out a good lunch spot a bit up the mountain. If everyone is willing to push on a bit, we can try and reach the summit to get a bird’s-eye view of the area we are going to be covering the following days. We might be lucky to see some wildlife such as reindeers, snow hares, foxes, and eagles.

Back at the basecamp, we can go fishing in order to catch the dinner and collect some local herbs, mushrooms, and berries. The evening will be used to prepare for the next two days, a hike inland with a sleepover at lake Qajartoriarsuaq.

    Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner
    Hiking: 5-10 km / 3.1-6.2 mi, 5-7 hours
    Accommodation: Tent

Hiking in Greenland on a sunny day
  • This day will be a full day of exploratory hiking towards the inland lakes in pristine Greenlandic nature. The hike will be in varying terrain, with a good share of time to soak in the views and surroundings.

Reaching our camp site, we will set up the camp. Fishing for arctic char will be a possibility in the evening. For the ones who do not fear cold waters, a dip in the lake should prove quite refreshing. Another option is to go on a stroll alongside the lake in the evening sun.

    Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner
    Hiking: 5-10 km / 3.1-6.2 mi, 5-6 hours
    Accommodation: Tent

    Hikers on a rock
  • After packing up the camp, we will backtrack a bit before we turn toward the mountain massif and leave the lowlands behind us. The target of the day will be a hidden gem of a viewpoint, a cone-shaped mountain top. Surrounded by lakes and with a high chance of catching a glimpse of some wildlife, this will also be our lunch spot.

Later, we will work our way back to basecamp and prepare a feast. Filled with amazing experiences and stories to pass on, we’ll go to sleep.

    Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner
    Hiking: 10-15 km / 6.2-9.3 mi, 5-6 hours
    Accommodation: Tent

View from the camp in Greenland
  • This day will be a hike to a lake (or natural pool) where the Norse used to take their baths in the summer. The pool is hidden among bushes and rocks with a stunning view over the bay. Feel free to take a cold dip in the pool, just to let your mind wander a thousand years back and imagine how life would have been back then.

The most northerly sheep farmer is located nearby, and this would be a good chance to go and say hi, and also hear a bit about life as a sheep farmer in this remote place.

    Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner
    Hiking: 7-10 km / 4.3-6.2 mi, 6-7 hours
    Accommodation: Tent

Chunks of ice on the shore
  • We will follow some tracks and paths used by the reindeer and locals for decades. They will lead us up on higher grounds onto a plateau with several options for exploration. With amazing views along the icefjord, there will be another good chance of seeing wildlife such as snow hares and reindeer.

    Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner
    Hiking: 7-11 km / 4.3-6.8 mi, 6-7 hours
    Accommodation: Tent

    Whale spotting in Greenland
  • Today, we will take down the basecamp and follow the southside of the bay in Kapisillit until we reach the river close to the village of Kapisillit. This is the only river in Greenland where the salmon come to spawn. Here we will have a short stop to see if we might catch arctic char in an alternative way—by hand! The method is commonly used by the local guide.

After the fishing, we’ll go on our last hike to Kapisillit and have a look around in this traditional Greenlandic village. There will be time to chit-chat with locals before our pick-up and boat ride back to Nuuk.

    Meals: Breakfast, lunch
    Hiking: 8-10 km / 5-6.2 mi, 6-7 hours
