The adventure, day by day

This self-guided bike tour follows the Main, Rhine, and Moselle rivers from Frankfurt to Trier across 7 riding days, covering approximately 343 km (213 mi). Route materials, maps, GPX files, and daily luggage transfers are all included—just show up and ride. You stay in handpicked 4-star hotels in historic town centers throughout, with departures running April through October so you choose the dates that work for you.

Day 1: Frankfurt to Mainz
mainz view

You set off from Frankfurt along the Main River, passing through Höchst—a medieval district with a well-preserved old town once tied to the Archbishopric of Mainz. After a leisurely break, perhaps with a glass of Ebbelwoi (local apple wine) or a plate of Handkäs mit Musik, the route continues through vineyards and charming riverside towns to the confluence of the Main and Rhine. You arrive in Mainz, a city with over 2,000 years of history—don’t miss the magnificent Romanesque cathedral and the Gutenberg Museum, dedicated to the man who invented the printing press right here.

Meals: Breakfast
Cycling: 42 km (26 mi)
Accommodation: Hilton Hotel (4-star), Mainz

Day 2: Mainz to Oberwesel
rudesheim am rhein

The longest day of the tour is also one of its most rewarding. You ride through Eltville, known for its rose gardens and half-timbered houses, before reaching Rüdesheim am Rhein—a world-famous wine town where a chairlift ride up to the Niederwald monument offers a sweeping panorama over the Rhine Valley. Crossing the river, you enter the UNESCO-listed Upper Middle Rhine Valley, passing terraced vineyards, romantic castles, and the beautifully preserved medieval town of Bacharach. The day ends in Oberwesel, where the imposing Schönburg Castle rises above the town on a wooded hill.

Meals: Breakfast; dinner at Burghotel Schönburg
Cycling: 64 km (40 mi)
Accommodation: Burghotel Schönburg (4-star), Oberwesel

Day 3: Oberwesel to Koblenz
vier seen blick

The first part of today’s ride is dominated by the legendary Loreley Rock—a towering slate cliff rising above the Rhine’s narrowest and most treacherous stretch, steeped in German folklore. You continue through Boppard, where an optional chairlift to the Vierseenblick (Four Lakes View) offers one of the valley’s most spectacular panoramas. Arriving in Koblenz, a cable car carries you up to the Ehrenbreitstein Fortress above the city. Down below, the Deutsches Eck—the dramatic point where the Rhine and Moselle converge—is one of Germany’s most recognizable landmarks.

Meals: Breakfast
Cycling: 45 km (28 mi)
Accommodation: Hotel Mercure (4-star), Koblenz

Day 4: Koblenz to Cochem
germany cochem town

Leaving the Rhine behind, you follow the Moselle River south through vineyard-covered slopes and half-timbered villages. The route passes through picturesque Winningen and the charming Kobern-Gondorf before a scenic detour leads to Eltz Castle—a fairytale medieval fortress nestled in the forested hills above the Moselle near Moselkern. You arrive in Cochem, a town crowned by the majestic Reichsburg castle, well worth a wander through its fortress and historic lanes.

Meals: Breakfast
Cycling: 49 km (30 mi)
Accommodation: Hotel Villa Vinum (4-star), Cochem

Day 5: Cochem to Traben-Trarbach
traben trarbach river

Today the Moselle reveals some of its most dramatic scenery. You pass the Calmont vineyard—Europe’s steepest—before winding through traditional wine villages and past the imposing Marienburg castle. The route takes you through the picturesque Moselle loop at Zell and the baroque streets of Zeltingen before arriving in Traben-Trarbach, an elegant twin town straddling the river, known for its exceptional Art Nouveau architecture and some of the finest wine cellars on the Moselle.

Meals: Breakfast
Cycling: 55 km (34 mi)
Accommodation: Romantik Jugendstilhotel Bellevue (4-star), Traben-Trarbach

Day 6: Traben-Trarbach to Piesport
moselle bike path

A quieter, more meditative day along the Moselle as you pedal through gentle wine villages and vineyard-carpeted hillsides. The river meanders along its unhurried course, and the pace of the day invites you to stop, look around, and perhaps duck into a local Straußwirtschaft for a glass of Riesling. You arrive in Piesport, a small village with outsized wine fame—its Goldtröpfchen vineyard is one of the most celebrated Riesling sites in all of Germany.

Meals: Breakfast
Cycling: 40 km (25 mi)
Accommodation: Weinhotel Piesporter Goldtröpfchen (3-star), Piesport

Day 7: Piesport to Trier
trittenheim moselle loop

You set off through Neumagen-Dhron—Germany’s oldest wine village—where Roman wine ship sculptures hint at centuries of viticultural tradition. The route continues past the vineyards of Trittenheim and across one of the Moselle’s oldest bridges, where preserved ferry towers recall an earlier era of river transport. The day’s destination is Trier, Germany’s oldest city, founded by the Romans over 2,000 years ago—spend the evening exploring the Porta Nigra, the Cathedral of Saint Peter, and the Imperial Baths, then raise a glass of Riesling to a great week on the bike.

Meals: Breakfast
Cycling: 48 km (30 mi)
Accommodation: Hotel Park Plaza (4-star), Trier

Day 8: Departure from Trier
trier city square

Your cycling adventure comes to a close in Trier. If you haven’t had the chance yet, the morning is perfect for a final stroll past the city’s Roman monuments—the Porta Nigra, the Cathedral of Saint Peter, the Imperial Baths, and the Electoral Palace are all within easy walking distance of the center. Head home when ready, or extend your stay to explore more of Germany’s most historically layered city.
