You arrive in Mainz, a city with over 2,000 years of history—don’t miss the magnificent Romanesque cathedral and the Gutenberg Museum, dedicated to the man who invented the printing press right here.

You ride through Eltville, known for its rose gardens and half-timbered houses, before reaching Rüdesheim am Rhein—a world-famous wine town where a chairlift ride up to the Niederwald monument offers a sweeping panorama over the Rhine Valley. Crossing the river, you enter the UNESCO-listed Upper Middle Rhine Valley, passing terraced vineyards, romantic castles, and the beautifully preserved medieval town of Bacharach. The day ends in Oberwesel, where the imposing Schönburg Castle rises above the town on a wooded hill.

Arriving in Koblenz, a cable car carries you up to the Ehrenbreitstein Fortress above the city. Down below, the Deutsches Eck—the dramatic point where the Rhine and Moselle converge—is one of Germany’s most recognizable landmarks.

You pass the Calmont vineyard—Europe’s steepest—before winding through traditional wine villages and past the imposing Marienburg castle. The route takes you through the picturesque Moselle loop at Zell and the baroque streets of Zeltingen before arriving in Traben-Trarbach, an elegant twin town straddling the river, known for its exceptional Art Nouveau architecture and some of the finest wine cellars on the Moselle.

    • A quieter, more meditative day along the Moselle as you pedal through gentle wine villages and vineyard-carpeted hillsides. The river meanders along its unhurried course, and the pace of the day invites you to stop, look around, and perhaps duck into a local Straußwirtschaft for a glass of Riesling. You arrive in Piesport, a small village with outsized wine fame—its Goldtröpfchen vineyard is one of the most celebrated Riesling sites in all of Germany.
