Hiking Coyote Gulch

Hiking Coyote Gulch: Utah Canyon Backpacking Adventure

Most deserts don’t do water, shade, and towering sandstone all at once. Coyote Gulch does, and it does it ridiculously well. We hike in with everything on our backs, earning every step through sand, creek crossings, and rugged terrain, but the payoff keeps stacking up. We’re talking Stevens Arch stretching impossibly wide, Coyote Natural Bridge carved to perfection, waterfalls spilling out of sheer rock, and a green ribbon of life winding through a place that should be dry. Cottonwoods, pools, sculpted walls that glow at sunrise and burn red at sunset, and camps tucked beneath cliffs that feel almost unreal to wake up under. Hard work? Absolutely. But every mile rewrites what you thought a desert could be.

Ronnie
Born and raised in Florida, Ronnie first fell in love with the Grand Canyon on a university trip that included backpacking below the rim and rafting the Colorado River. That experience was a pivotal moment that inspired her to pursue backcountry guiding. She has been guiding outdoor trips for six years in a variety of settings, including wilderness therapy. Ronnie fell in love with the desert through many trips out West before eventually moving there. She is passionate about the metaphors found in the desert and loves sharing them with others. She enjoys connecting with new people and helping create meaningful outdoor experiences. When she’s not in the canyon, Ronnie can be found roaming the Southwest—climbing, hiking, paddling, skiing, and exploring as many beautiful places as possible. The Grand Canyon is one of the most special places on Earth, and she can’t wait for you to experience it for yourself.
Marci

Marci
Marci credits her love of the outdoors to family experiences during her youth, growing up in the beautiful Rocky Mountains of Utah while hiking, exploring, and backpacking. She enjoys the adventure of travel and discovering new places, which goes hand in hand with her desire to guide groups into the Grand Canyon year after year. Meeting new people and watching them experience the trail’s incredible sights for the first time is always rewarding. Marci loves spending time with her family and supporting them in reaching their life goals. An avid trail runner, ultramarathoner, and triathlete, she fuels herself with homemade foods and enjoys trying new recipes on family and friends.
Steven

Steven
Raised in the northern forests of Michigan, Steven spent countless hours exploring deer trails and abandoned rail lines from a young age and loved introducing friends to the wild, quiet places he cherished. He later organized backpacking and skiing trips across the Midwest and Southwest, where he fell in love with the desert. Now splitting time between Tucson and Flagstaff, Steven is an endurance athlete, trail runner, and Arizona Trail thru-hiker. Completing the 800-mile Arizona Trail in 2021 taught him the value of slowing down and sharing adventures with others. Guiding allows him to do just that—introducing new friends to the beauty of the Grand Canyon, whether it’s their first backpacking trip or one of many.

  • This is a strenuous and challenging backpacking trip and solid preparation is required. You’ll be hiking up to 16–19 km (10–12 miles) per day, often on rocky, steep, and unmaintained terrain, while carrying a backpack weighing around 16 kg (35 lbs), plus an additional 4–5 kg (8–10 lbs) of shared gear.

To be ready, you should train specifically for backpacking. That means hiking with a weighted pack, in the same footwear you’ll use on the trip, over long distances and uneven terrain. You’ll also be walking in and crossing water regularly, so getting used to hiking in wet shoes is important.

Some sections include exposure near cliffs and brief Class 3 scrambling, so you should feel comfortable with heights and moving over uneven terrain. This trip is not recommended for those with vertigo.

Proper preparation is essential. Being physically ready ensures you can enjoy the experience safely and fully, as evacuations in this remote backcountry are complex and not always guaranteed.
