How fit do I need to be?

This Rhone bike & boat tour is beginner-friendly, but good fitness is a must . This route takes you through picturesque wine-growing landscapes of the Rhone Valley along the steeply terraced slopes. The total distance covered by e-bike (which is included in the price) is circa 250 km (155 miles), with daily rides being between 14-40 miles (22-65 km). Most of the time you’ll be cycling on rural country roads with light traffic. Your guides rate this tour as easy to moderate. Although the south of France is very mountainous, the routes are not particularly strenuous as you often start with the e-bike above the river valleys and ride a lot more downhill and uphill. And all gradients are easy to ride with e-bikes. On your premium pedelec equipped with Bosch or Shimano mid-mounted motor, you can decide how much assistance you require! Non-riders can also join the tour. If that’s the case, non-riders should contact us prior to booking the trip.

What do I need to bring?

The weather can be capricious. Hot days can be exhausting even with a bike. During the day, the climate is usually pleasantly warm, while in the evening, it can get noticeably cooler. Sometimes there is a strong refreshing wind in the mountains. Occasionally, the warm Scirocco wind comes from North Africa. It blows constantly from the south and sometimes brings moisture with it. Group sizes and pricing For this Rhone bike & boat tour, the usual client-to-guide ratio is 9:1 . There will be one guide cycling with the group and one guide accompanying the tour in a support van. It takes a minimum of 8 people for this tour to operate. The maximum group size is set at 18 participants . If you’re a solo traveller , you’re welcome to join the tour, but paying for the single occupancy cabin is mandatory. It is not possible to join the tour solo and share the cabin with another guest. Getting there and meeting location

The starting point of your Lyon tour is Lyon Saint-Exupéry Airport (LYS) , located about 20 miles (32 km) southeast of Lyon city center. To get to the city center, take the Rhônexpress tram from the St Exupery train station, which runs every 15 minutes and takes around 30 minutes. Full-price tickets are €16.10/€27.80, with discounts available online or for those under 25. Children under 12 travel free. Purchase tickets online, at airport/tram stop machines, or from the on-board conductor (€4 fee). At the Gare de Lyon Part-Dieu, the tram stop is outside the station. But be aware: there are two exits. Follow the signs inside for the Rhônexpress (Porte Alpes) and it will be on your right as you exit. If you find yourself by the metro station, then you need to be on the other side. Alternatively, private transfer can be arranged from the airport to the boat. This bike & boat journey along the Rhône river is a deluxe way of exploring Provence. Over the course of 8 days, we’ll discover medieval villages, lavender fields, quiet roads, endless vineyards, and Provence’s most beautiful spots. Our home for the week will be the modern and luxurious STELLA or LUNA, ships boasting countless entertainment and spa possibilities, that will calmly cruise along the Rhone river. All lodgings are included, as well as all meals, guided day tours, a wine tasting, city tours, and much more. Provence will win you over—and it’s going to be really difficult to leave!

Day 1: Arrival in Lyon

We arrive in Lyon in the afternoon and settle into our river cruise ship, our comfortable floating base for the week. After checking into our cabins, we gather on deck for a welcome briefing and an introduction to the journey ahead while enjoying the first views along the Rhône. At 6 p.m., we begin cruising south, and later we take an evening panoramic cruise through Lyon’s old town, admiring the illuminated buildings, riverfront, and lively atmosphere that set the tone for our adventure.

Day 2: Tournon & Tain-l’Hermitage – Via Rhôna loop

Our first cycling stage leads us along both shores of the Rhône on a scenic loop from Tain-l’Hermitage. The route passes the hydroelectric dam, the medieval Diane de Poitiers tower, and Marc Seguin’s historic footbridge, offering plenty to see along the way. We also stop to enjoy the famous Valrhona chocolate, a true local specialty. In the afternoon, we return to the ship and unwind on the sundeck as the landscape slowly changes while we continue cruising south.

Day 3: Avignon, Châteauneuf-du-Pape, and city tour

We dock in Avignon and set out on our bikes through farmland, vineyards, and orchards toward Châteauneuf-du-Pape, where we take part in a guided wine tasting. Returning to Avignon, we stop at the iconic Pont d’Avignon before beginning a detailed city tour that explores the papal legacy, medieval streets, and elegant squares. Since the ship stays in port overnight, we can enjoy Avignon’s charming old town after dinner and soak in the evening ambiance.

Day 4: Arles & Saint-Rémy-de-Provence

We begin cycling from Arles in the morning, following scenic roads toward Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, a small town full of Provençal character and known for its connection to Van Gogh. After lunch, we visit the impressive Carrières de Lumières art center, where classic artworks are projected onto towering stone walls. In the afternoon, we follow quiet routes through farmland and small villages back toward Arles, with time later to explore its Roman amphitheater or enjoy a coffee in the lively old town.

Day 5: Tour through the Camargue

Leaving Arles, we cycle along the Via Rhôna into the vast and wild landscapes of the Camargue, known for its salt flats, rice fields, and wildlife. The route offers opportunities to spot flamingos, herons, and the region’s famous white horses as we ride toward the seaside town of Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer. After exploring its waterfront and narrow streets, we return to the ship in the late afternoon, bringing an end to a day filled with nature and open horizons.

Day 6: The wild gorge of the Ardèche

Today we cycle from the Rhône up toward the Ardèche Gorge, following quiet country roads through lavender fields, garrigue scrub, and oak forests. Reaching the canyon rim, we enjoy spectacular viewpoints over one of France’s most impressive natural landscapes. After the ride, we return to the ship with time to rest, enjoy the sundeck, or visit the onboard spa while the river cruise continues smoothly down the Rhône.

Day 7: Lyon city bike tour

We enjoy a relaxed morning on the ship as it sails back toward Lyon, giving us time to rest before our final ride. In the afternoon, we explore the city by bike, discovering its Renaissance quarter, hidden traboules, historic squares, and elegant riverside districts. It’s an engaging way to experience Lyon’s history and culture before returning on board for our final evening together.

Day 8: Departure

After one last breakfast on board, we disembark around 9 a.m. and say farewell to the ship. Those catching a flight can use the scheduled airport transfer, while others continue their travels independently. Today we set out on a full-day ride from Avignon to the impressive Pont du Gard, following quiet cycle paths and small country roads with occasional views of the Rhône. The route leads us through peaceful vineyards, orchards, and gentle Provençal countryside, making for an easy and enjoyable stage. Our highlight comes at the end of the ride, when the remarkable three-tier Roman aqueduct appears — a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the most iconic ancient structures in France. After exploring the site and taking in the views, we transfer back to Avignon in the afternoon. This tour replaces the cycling program originally planned for Day 4.

Cabins

The difference among cabins is the deck and the windows.

- Category A cabins are the most basic ones—they have windows which do not open and they’re on the lowest deck.
- Category C and D cabins have windows that can be opened, as well as a French balcony. Cabins in category D are on a deck above category C—a deck where you’ll also find a restaurant, bar, and many other amenities.

Solo travelers are welcome to join, but adding the single cabin surcharge is mandatory—this will be automatically sorted at checkout once you tell us if you’re traveling alone or with someone else.
The starting point of your Lyon tour is Lyon Saint-Exupéry Airport (LYS), located about 20 miles (32 km) southeast of Lyon city center.

To get to the city center, take the Rhônexpress tram from the St Exupery train station, which runs every 15 minutes and takes around 30 minutes. Full-price tickets are €16.10/€27.80, with discounts available online or for those under 25. Children under 12 travel free. Purchase tickets online, at airport/tram stop machines, or from the on-board conductor (€4 fee). At the Gare de Lyon Part-Dieu, the tram stop is outside the station. But be aware: there are two exits. Follow the signs inside for the Rhônexpress (Porte Alpes) and it will be on your right as you exit. If you find yourself by the metro station, then you need to be on the other side.

Alternatively, private transfer can be arranged from the airport to the boat.

Please book your flight to arrive at Lyon Airport by 3 pm at the latest to ensure you reach the meeting point on board the ship by 5 pm and can join the panorama tour.

  - 119 to 60 days before the departure date, you are entitled to a refund in the amount of 60% of the full trip price (less the booking fees).
  - 59 to 31 days before the departure date, you are entitled to a refund in the amount of 40% of the full trip price (less the booking fees).
  - 30 to 15 days before the departure date, you are entitled to a refund in the amount of 20% of the full trip price (less the booking fees).
  - 14 to 5 days before the departure date, you are entitled to a refund in the amount of 5% of the full trip price (less the booking fees).
  - Within 4 days of the departure date, no refund will be issued.
Please note that booking fees are non-refundable in all cases and will be deducted from the refund amount.
