In this episode:

  • Five alpine bowls, and the most chute skiing in North America
  • What champagne powder is, and why Golden gets it
  • Golden, BC’s Swiss guiding roots and the Powder Highway
  • Hiring an ACMG guide, heli skiing, and cat skiing
  • How Kicking Horse landed the Freeride World Tour

Kicking Horse might be the most insane ski resort in North America. Five alpine bowls. Peaks you bootpack to inside the resort boundary. The most chute skiing of any ski area on the continent — and snow so consistent you can still find powder two weeks after the last storm.

We sat down with Powder Matt Mosteller, SVP of Resorts at Resorts of the Canadian Rockies, and Toby Barrett, who runs sales, marketing, and operations at Kicking Horse, to get into all of it: the terrain, the snow science, backcountry access, and why Golden, BC might be the most underrated ski town on the continent.

Toby’s read on why Golden still flies under the radar, and Matt’s case for chute skiing over everything else the Rockies offer — that’s the part worth staying for.

Powder Matt Mosteller
SVP of Resorts at Resorts of the Canadian Rockies

“Powder Matt” Mosteller is Senior Vice President for Resorts of the Canadian Rockies, a storyteller, ski bum, and outdoor adventurer whose writing has appeared in POWDER Magazine and major publications across North America, earning recognition as one of Canada’s top travel writers by Postmedia. He played a central role in building the identity of the Powder Highway, the British Columbia ski terrain he lives along and is named after, and once outran a mother grizzly bear and two cubs down an untracked couloir in Glacier National Park to live and write about it.

Toby Barrett
Manager of Revenue and Guest Experience at Kicking Horse Mountain Resort

Toby Barrett is Manager of Revenue and Guest Experience at Kicking Horse Mountain Resort and President of Tourism Golden — two roles that together make him the person most responsible for how the world understands this corner of British Columbia. Originally from Vancouver, he grew up skiing Blackcomb at Whistler before moving to Golden a decade ago on little more than a tip from a couple of friends who’d already made the same call. He’s never looked back. A lifelong skier turned mountain town advocate, Toby knows the Kicking Horse snowpack the way locals know their own backyard — and has spent years quietly making the case that champagne powder is less a tagline and more a meteorological fact.
