Tour du Mont Blanc, Guided & Hotel-Based: Hiking Europe’s Most Iconic Trek

8-12 days | Moderate to Challenging | 5.00

Book a call

The question isn’t whether to do the Tour du Mont Blanc, it’s how much time you’ve got. We run it in 8 days for those who want the essential circuit, and 12 for those who want every last stage of it. It’s truly Europe’s most iconic trek, featuring three countries, high passes, glacier views, and proper mountain villages, with guides who’ve crossed these cols more times than they can count. Either way, you’re sleeping in real hotel beds instead of bunk rooms and sitting down to a hot dinner every single night. No hut queues, no dormitory snoring, no cooking your own meals at altitude. The TMB has been on your list long enough, here’s how you do it.

Adventure Highlights

  • Three countries, one legendary circuit: Walk the full TMB loop through France, Italy, and Switzerland, crossing the Col de la Seigne, the Grand Col Ferret, and the Col de la Balme
  • Ditch the heavy pack: Your main luggage is transferred to the next hotel every day so all you carry is a daypack, with dinner waiting at the end of each stage
  • 8 or 12 days, you choose: 8 days for the essential circuit, 12 for the full loop — same passes, same guides, pick what fits your schedule and your legs

The adventure, day by day

Over 8 days, we'll walk the classic heart of the Tour du Mont Blanc through France, Italy, and Switzerland—crossing the Col de la Seigne, the Grand Col Ferret, and the Col de la Balme, with Mont Blanc as a near-constant presence overhead. We hike with daypacks while luggage travels ahead to the next hotel, then sit down each evening to a proper dinner in an alpine village. Six big days on trail, three countries, and some of the finest mountain scenery in the Alps. If you want the TMB classic circuit without taking two weeks off work, this is the way to do it.

Day 1: Arrival in Saint Gervais les Bains
Saint Gervais town France

Arrive in Saint Gervais les Bains, a traditional French alpine village nestled at the foot of Mont Blanc. Check in to the hotel after 4 pm and meet the guide at 6 pm for a group briefing and introductions. There’s no hiking today—just time to settle in, get your kit sorted, and get ready for the days ahead.

Meals: Dinner
Accommodation: 3-star hotel in Saint Gervais les Bains (Hotel Coeur des Neiges or similar)

Day 2: Les Contamines to Les Chapieux
Lake near Col du Bonhomme

A short private transfer takes us to Notre-Dame de la Gorge, where the climbing begins in earnest. We ascend over the Col du Bonhomme and the Col de la Croix du Bonhomme—two high passes with wide views—then drop into the scenic Chapieux valley, tracing the base of the Aiguille des Glaciers the whole way. A private transfer delivers us to our hotel in Bourg Saint Maurice for the evening.

Meals: Breakfast, dinner
Hiking: 14.5 km (9 mi), about 6 to 7 hours
Elevation: +1,200 m (+3,937 ft) / -900 m (-2,953 ft)
Accommodation: 2-star hotel in Bourg Saint Maurice (Hotel Angival or Hotel Arolla or similar)

Day 3: Les Chapieux to Courmayeur
Val ferret Italy

A transfer from Bourg Saint Maurice brings us to Ville des Glaciers, where we set off over the Col de la Seigne and into Italy. The views on the other side open up dramatically—the towering Grandes Jorasses dominate the horizon as we descend into the Italian Val Ferret. A private transfer takes us the final stretch into Courmayeur, one of Italy’s great alpine towns, for a proper Italian dinner out.

Meals: Breakfast, dinner
Hiking: 15 km (9.3 mi), about 6 hours
Elevation: +700 m (+2,297 ft) / -1,000 m (-3,281 ft)
Accommodation: 3-star hotel in Courmayeur (Hotel Triolet or similar)

Day 4: Courmayeur to Champex
the small village of Champex and its lake, near the Mont blanc, Switzerland

After a private transfer up into the Italian Val Ferret, we climb to the Grand Col Ferret and cross into Switzerland. The views from the pass are exceptional—the Combins massif stretches out to the east, the Italian flanks of Mont Blanc behind us. We descend to the pretty village of La Fouly, then transfer onward to Champex, a peaceful alpine resort sitting above its own mountain lake.

Meals: Breakfast, dinner
Hiking: 14.4 km (9 mi), about 5 to 6 hours
Elevation: +850 m (+2,789 ft) / -1,000 m (-3,281 ft)
Accommodation: 3-star hotel in Champex (Hotel Glacier or similar)

Day 5: Champex to Trient
Trient Swiss village

We set off directly from the hotel, weaving through small alpine hamlets before the trail climbs up onto the Bovine balcony route—a long, sweeping traverse across high pastures with wide views over the Rhone Valley below. We descend to the Col de la Forclaz and the village of Trient, where we spend the night in a mountain lodge.

Meals: Breakfast, dinner
Hiking: 15 km (9.3 mi), about 5.5 to 6.5 hours
Elevation: +800 m (+2,625 ft) / -1,365 m (-4,579 ft)
Accommodation: Mountain lodge in Trient (Hotel de la Forclaz or similar)

Day 6: Trient to Argentière

We climb out of Switzerland and cross back into France over the Col de la Balme, with sweeping views of Mont Blanc and the Aiguille Verte unfolding as we ascend. On the descent, the guide will pick the best route down—either through the hamlet of Le Tour or directly into the village of Argentière, a quiet end to a strong day.

Meals: Breakfast, dinner
Hiking: 11.2 km (7 mi), about 6 to 7 hours
Elevation: +1,000 m (+3,281 ft) / -820 m (-2,690 ft)

Day 7: Argentière to Chamonix
Mountain goat in Aiguilles Rouges

The final hiking day is one of the best. We traverse the Balcon des Aiguilles Rouges and climb to Lac Blanc, a glacial lake set high above the valley with a panorama that takes in the Aiguille Verte, Les Drus, La Mer de Glace, and Mont Blanc itself. We descend to Chamonix via Le Praz, finishing with a cable car from La Flégère and a short bus ride into town—both included.

Chamonix from the air

After breakfast and hotel check-out by 11 am, the trip officially ends. Most people fly out of Geneva Airport (GVA), approximately one hour from Chamonix.

Meals: Breakfast

Over 12 days, we'll walk the entire Tour du Mont Blanc loop—every pass, every border crossing, every stage of the full classic circuit through France, Italy, and Switzerland. We cross the Col de la Seigne, the Grand Col Ferret, and the Col de la Balme, trace glacier edges, drop into alpine villages, and climb back out the other side, with Mont Blanc overhead for most of it. We hike with daypacks while luggage moves ahead each day, and every evening ends with a proper dinner at a mountain hotel or refuge. This is the TMB done in full, with nothing skipped and nothing rushed. If you've got the time and the legs for the whole thing, there's no better way to do it.

Day 1: Arrival in Chamonix
Aerial view of Chamonix

Upon arrival in Chamonix, the legendary alpine town at the foot of Mont Blanc, you’ll meet the guide for a 6 pm group briefing and introduction. Check-in at the hotel opens at 4 pm. Meals: Dinner
Accommodation: 4-star hotel in Chamonix (Heliopic Hotel or similar)

Day 2: Les Houches to Les Contamines

We head to Ville des Glaciers and cross the Col de la Seigne, our gateway into Italy, with dramatic views of the Grandes Jorasses opening up on the other side. We descend into the Italian Val Ferret and take a private transfer for the final stretch into Courmayeur, a lively mountain town perfect for a proper Italian dinner.

Meals: Breakfast, dinner

Valley near chapieux

We climb above Courmayeur to the Montagne de la Saxe, with two route options depending on the group’s fitness: the Route des Balcons for a superb panorama of Mont Blanc and the Grandes Jorasses, or the more demanding Haute Route for even bolder views. A private transfer then takes us to Argentiere, a charming village in the French Chamonix valley.

Meals: Breakfast, dinner
Hiking: 15 to 16 km (9.5 to 9.9 mi), about 6 hours

One of the circuit’s most spectacular days. Oceane was a wonderful guide – well prepared, set expectations, shared interesting information about the terrain and the towns we were passing through and proactively sensed the needs and energy level of the group. She anticipated weather changes and kept us appropriately dressed and ready. Her patience with the many questions and expectations of those in the group was outstanding. Her lunch treats – cheese, fresh bread and chocolate were a highlight and a great pick me up. She made the hike fun! Thank you Oceane!

The adventure was everything I had hoped for. They built trails a little differently in Europe than at home here in the United States. It was nice meeting others from different cultures and countries around the world. I was saddened by seeing the numbering of retreating glaciers on the Mont Blanc Massif. It was a bucket list item of mine to circumnavigate the roof of Europe. I’m still absorbing the entire trip and accomplishment.

Beautiful scenery, wonderful encounters, and a warm welcome every evening – we were delighted with this trip. We will definitely be back.

The adventure was thrilling; it was a challenging but rewarding hike. It may have been helpful to have a rest day built in but there was some hike days that ended earlier so that almost gave us a feeling of a rest day. Amazing adventure

      • Cable car rides as described in the itinerary
      • Private transfers as described in the itinerary

    Add-ons (pricing shown at checkout):

      • Single occupancy room

    Not included:

      • Flights & airport transfers
      • Picnic lunches with the 12-day itinerary
      • Drinks
      • Excess baggage fees
      • Personal expenses
      • Anything not mentioned in the “Included” section above
      • Insurance — recommended, available to add at checkout
      • Guide gratuities — optional
  • It comes down to two things: time, and how much of the circuit you want under your boots.

    Go for the 8-day if:

      • You’ve got a week and want the TMB done properly—not rushed, not watered down.
      • You want to hit the three iconic border crossings: the Col de la Seigne into Italy, the Grand Col Ferret into Switzerland, the Col de la Balme back into France.
      • You want to finish on one of the best days on the entire route—Lac Blanc, Mont Blanc filling the horizon, cable car down into Chamonix.

It’s the essential circuit. You won’t feel like you missed anything.

    Go for the 12-day if:

      • You want the full loop, every stage, nothing left out.
      • You want the extra day above Courmayeur on the Montagne de la Saxe—arguably the best views on the entire TMB.
      • You want to cross the Fenêtre d’Arpette, a dramatic high rocky notch above the Trient glacier that the 8-day doesn’t include.
      • The TMB has been on your list for years and you want to do it properly, completely, no shortcuts.

Either way, same guides, same hotels, same dinners. The only real question is how long you want to stay out there.

  • Both the 8-day and 12-day tours follow the classic Tour du Mont Blanc circuit through France, Italy, and Switzerland. You’ll need solid fitness, real hiking experience, and comfortable legs on steep, uneven mountain terrain. Prior multi-day hiking experience is strongly recommended for both. There is one suspension bridge on the route that may be a challenge if you’re uncomfortable with heights. Trekking poles are strongly recommended.

    8-day tour

      • 6 days of hiking
      • Daily distances up to 15 km (9.3 mi)
      • Daily hiking time: 5 to 7 hours, occasionally up to 9 hours

    12-day tour

      • 10 days of hiking
      • Daily distances up to 21 km (13 mi)
      • Daily hiking time: 4 to 9 hours
      • Daily elevation gain: up to 1,350 m (4,430 ft)

Want to see what else is there in the area? Discover more Mont Blanc hiking tours here!

  • Each day, your main bag is transferred by vehicle to the next accommodation while you hike with just a daypack. You’ll have access to your main bag at the end of each day, but not during the hike itself. One bag per person is allowed, with a maximum weight of 15 kg (33 lbs). It can be a duffel, suitcase, or backpack in good condition.

You’ll carry a daypack throughout each hiking day with everything you need: rain gear, warm layers, water, snacks, sunscreen, and your camera. The daypack is not provided. If you have extra luggage you won’t need on the trail, it can be stored safely through the luggage transfer service for an additional fee.
