The Sierra Nevada holds three of California’s best-loved national parks, and this week of hiking in the Sierra Nevada, California, takes in all of them. We start in Sequoia and Kings Canyon, the quieter corner of the range. The biggest trees in the world grow here, alongside one of the deepest canyons in the US. Then we head north to Yosemite, with its cascading waterfalls, 3,000-foot granite cliffs, and the less-visited corners of Hetch Hetchy and the high country. We travel as a small group of no more than eight. Evenings are spent in a hotel near Sequoia and in upscale glamping tents in Yosemite, and we take care of the meals and transportation.

The adventure, day by day

We meet in Fresno and drive straight to Three Rivers, where a home-cooked dinner kicks things off. The first two full days go to Sequoia and Kings Canyon: the Giant Forest, Moro Rock, General Sherman, Zumwalt Meadows, and a picnic lunch somewhere with a view. Then we head north to Yosemite, stopping at quiet Hetch Hetchy before settling into our glamping tents. Day five is Yosemite Valley, waterfalls and towering walls. Day six climbs into the high country for alpine lakes and a longer hike, followed by a campfire dinner. Breakfast on the last morning, then back to Fresno. Hiking runs up to 9 mi (14.5 km) a day.

Day 1: Meet in Fresno and transfer to Three Rivers
Hiking in Sierra Nevada | California

Arrive in Fresno, where your guides will be waiting to meet the group and get the week rolling. From there it’s a scenic drive to the hotel in Three Rivers, right on the doorstep of Sequoia National Park. Once everyone has settled in, we gather over a home-cooked dinner to run through the plan for the week, swap stories, and put faces to names before the hiking starts. Expect plenty of questions answered and a good dose of excitement about what’s coming.

Meals: Dinner
Accommodation: Hotel in Three Rivers

Day 2: Giant trees and big views in Sequoia National Park
Hiking in Sierra Nevada | California

After a quick breakfast, we head into Sequoia National Park for a full day of hiking, touring, and exploring. Your guides will talk you through the giant sequoias, some of the largest living things on earth, the conditions they need to grow, and the role they played in shaping the National Park system. Highlights can include Moro Rock, the General Sherman Tree, and the Giant Forest, with plenty more along the way. We finish the day back in Three Rivers with dinner together.

Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner
Accommodation: Hotel in Three Rivers

Day 3: Hiking and exploring Kings Canyon
Hiking in Sierra Nevada | California

Today we turn to the other half of the park, Kings Canyon. We might wander through Zumwalt Meadows with its slow-moving waterways and cascading falls, or look out toward Mount Whitney, the tallest peak in the lower 48. Halfway through the day we stop for a picnic lunch somewhere worth lingering, then keep hiking and exploring. It’s a quieter, wilder corner of the Sierra, and one of the deepest canyons in the country. Dinner is back at the hotel with the group.

Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner
Accommodation: Hotel in Three Rivers

Day 4: North to Yosemite and the quiet side of Hetch Hetchy
Hiking in Sierra Nevada | California

We pack up and drive north to Yosemite National Park, trading giant trees for granite. Before checking in, there’s a good chance we’ll detour to Hetch Hetchy, a corner of the park most visitors never see. Your guides will fill you in on the controversial story of the O’Shaughnessy Dam, why San Francisco still depends on it, and what the valley looked like before the water rose. It’s a calm, uncrowded place to stretch the legs after the drive. In the evening we settle into our upscale glamping tents, eat well, and get ready for the heart of Yosemite tomorrow.

Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner
Accommodation: Upscale glamping tent

Day 5: Waterfalls and granite walls in Yosemite Valley
North to Yosemite and the quiet side of Hetch Hetchy — Hiking in Sierra Nevada | California

Today belongs to Yosemite Valley, and it lives up to every photo you’ve seen of it. We’ll walk beneath cascading waterfalls, crane our necks at cliffs rising 3,000 ft (914 m) above the valley floor, and follow trails that wind alongside meandering rivers. Depending on conditions and how the group is feeling, your guides might link together a series of shorter hikes or commit to one bigger outing. Either way, there’s plenty of time to stop, look up, and let your guides explain how all this granite came to be. We head back to our glamping tents for dinner and a well-earned rest.

Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner
Accommodation: Upscale glamping tent

Day 6: Into Yosemite's high country, then a campfire dinner
Hiking in Sierra Nevada | California

Today we climb up, up, up into Yosemite’s high country, where the crowds thin out and the granite takes over. Hikes here can lead past alpine lakes and wide meadows, under towering peaks, and out to sweeping views of Half Dome, El Capitan, and the valley far below. We’ll likely tackle one longer hike and break for a picnic lunch mid-trail, with your guides filling in the story of how all this landscape came to be. Back at camp, we gather around the fire for dinner and swap favourite moments from the week, which is a fine way to close out seven days in the Sierra.

Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner
Accommodation: Upscale glamping tent

Day 7: Final breakfast and return to Fresno
Meet in Fresno and transfer to Three Rivers — Hiking in Sierra Nevada | California

One last breakfast with the group, a few more stories, and then it’s time to say “until next time.” We drive back to Fresno, arriving at Fresno-Yosemite International Airport around 12 pm, so book a flight leaving after 2 pm to give yourself plenty of time to check in. If you’re sticking around town for a while, your guides can drop you at your accommodation instead.

Sydney

Sydney
Sydney discovered the outdoors in the Pacific Northwest. She’s biased, but she still thinks the Cascades are the most beautiful peaks in the world. For the past three years, she’s guided in North Carolina’s Blue Ridge Mountains and Tennessee’s Great Smokies. Guiding lets this lifelong educator combine her two favorite things, getting outside and teaching, and she works to make everyone feel they belong outdoors. The Southeast is also where she fell in love with climbing. Hiking gives her time to think, while climbing pulls her into the moment. Off the trail, you’ll find her curled up with her black lab, Alpine, and her cats, Moose and Lobo.
Matt

Matt
Matt grew up in Indiana with a love for geology and the outdoors, but the West—with its varied terrain and vast wilderness—soon caught his attention. At 23, he moved to Flagstaff to study geology at Northern Arizona University. Today he uses that background to help guests read the landscape and understand how its formations came to be. He’s spent years exploring remote corners of the Southwest by backpacking, canyoneering, climbing, and peak bagging. Along the way he also became an avid landscape and adventure photographer, and he loves capturing guests’ experiences on the trail. Guiding hikes lets Matt bring all of these passions together and show guests what makes the Southwest such a great place to explore.
Jarrod
5.00
Jarrod
Jarrod grew up on the coast of southeastern Massachusetts, exploring rocky shores and skipping stones across the bay. After years in the Northeast’s hospitality and tourism industry, he downsized his life, moved into an RV, and headed west in search of adventure. While working in Yellowstone National Park, he fell in love with hiking, backpacking, and the solitude of remote wilderness. Seven years on the road eventually led him to Utah’s Wasatch and Uinta Mountains, where he now divides his time between alpine trails and the desert landscapes of the Southwest. Yellowstone remains his first love, and he’s always eager to share his passion for nature and the national parks with others.
Megan

Megan
Founder, Chief Adventure Office, and Senior Guide
Megan got her start in the travel industry as a kayak guide at an eco-lodge in Wales. After returning to the States, she continued leading day hikes for adventurous New Yorkers, which soon turned into adventures around the world. During this time, she also began working on the logistics side of travel and creating itineraries. After completing her Master’s in Outdoor Education, Megan headed to Montana to guide. She is a passionate environmentalist who uses her experience to run a more sustainable and inclusive outdoor travel company.
Jason

Jason
Operations Assistant & Lead Guide
Jason grew up in New York State, spending most of his childhood exploring the outdoors (barefoot!) and camping with his family. He got more into backpacking and the outdoors while on an extended adventure in Thailand, Australia and New Zealand. Since then, Jason has worked for NOLS and Outward Bound leading wilderness expeditions in the Everglades, Wind River Range, Bears Ears National Monument, and Blue Ridge Mountains. He has hiked all over the world: from the tall peaks of Mexico’s volcanoes to the deep canyons of Namibia. Jason is passionate about bringing folks outside and helping them to develop a sense of wonder towards nature and outdoor activities.

I am writing a review for this itinerary creation service, which is incredible! I would have never thought to use a service like this but we were planning a family trip to King’s Canyon and Sequoia National Parks with fairly complex logistics. Sydney took into account the needs of all the members of our group to outline a perfect few days in the park, including suggested hikes, food options, and “insider” details such as navigating road closures. Alex likewise created an itinerary for my dream solo trip to Zion and Bryce Canyon with suggested hikes that matched my skill level, information on obtaining permits, and places to rest and recover once my adventure is over. Thank you, I can’t wait to plan the next one! 🙂

Had an unbelievable time touring Sequoia National Park and Kings Canyon with this company, and our guide, Malo. Malo was fantastic…sharing a wealth of knowledge and a passion for the area that made the trip a highlight of our vacation! We even received homemade chili on a fantastic picnic lunch! Would highly recommend Malo and this company!
