    Arrival in Lisbon
  • We begin our day at Lisbon’s Cathedral, making our way east through the city towards Parque das Nações. The route takes us along the Tagus River, where we can observe the natural wetlands and their diverse wildlife.

As we make our way through the hillsides, we’ll see historic farmhouses, ancient olive groves, and religious landmarks including churches, chapels, and traditional fountains. Our journey combines dedicated pedestrian paths and shared routes.

To the west, our path is bordered by mountains covered in pine and cork oak forests. We’ll bike along the riverbanks, where we’ll find several inviting river beaches shaded by ash trees. We’ll see historic villages like Valada do Ribatejo, Reguengo do Alviela, and Porto de Muge, where we’ll see how local communities adapted to the Tagus River’s seasonal flooding by building protective dykes.

Our path takes us through the Serra de Santo António plateau, which serves as a gateway to an area characterized by dramatic elevation changes. We’ll encounter steep mountain slopes, imposing cliffs, and deep valleys, mixed with small agricultural pits. This route holds historical significance as the traditional passage that both divides and links the Tagus River plains to the coastal region.

Today’s route features remarkable cave systems and distinctive geological formations. We’ll pass by notable landmarks including the lapiaz fields (limestone pavements) and the steep Mira-Minde polje. As we approach Fátima, we’ll witness the transition from rural countryside to urban development, shaped by the presence of the Sanctuary.
