Today we’ll explore the mountainous terrain of the karst massif within the Serras de Aire e Candeeiros Natural Park. Since it’s a challenging landscape, it’s best to divide the journey into five sections with rest stops in between.
Our path takes us through the Serra de Santo António plateau, which serves as a gateway to an area characterized by dramatic elevation changes. We’ll encounter steep mountain slopes, imposing cliffs, and deep valleys, mixed with small agricultural pits. This route holds historical significance as the traditional passage that both divides and links the Tagus River plains to the coastal region.

Today’s route features remarkable cave systems and distinctive geological formations. We’ll pass by notable landmarks including the lapiaz fields (limestone pavements) and the steep Mira-Minde polje. As we approach Fátima, we’ll witness the transition from rural countryside to urban development, shaped by the presence of the Sanctuary. Fátima holds a unique place in Portuguese history as the country’s only urban centre developed in the 20th century that formed around a religious pilgrimage site.
