For more than a thousand years, pilgrims have made their way north toward Santiago de Compostela, and the Camino Portugués is one of the most popular routes to get there. On this guided bike tour, we ride it from Porto to Santiago’s cathedral over six days. We’ll follow waymarked stone trails and hidden gravel paths, roll through green river valleys and quiet Galician villages, and stop for hilltop views along the way. Whether you come for faith or simple curiosity, a support van, luggage transfers, and comfortable historic hotels handle the logistics, so every day is about the ride itself.

Adventure Highlights

  • A thousand-year-old pilgrimage: Follow the waymarked Camino from Porto all the way to Santiago de Compostela, finishing the journey at the city’s famous cathedral
  • Galicia at bike pace: Sleepy villages, centuries-old churches, hilltop views, then long descents into river valleys
  • Support at every turn: A local guide, a support van with mechanic assistance, energy snacks, and water refills keep the days running smoothly, whatever the terrain

The adventure, day by day

The trip runs eight days, with six of them in the saddle. We meet in Porto and transfer to the start, then ease into the Camino with a first day of gentle pedalling before the route settles into its rhythm: waymarked trails, quiet villages, a few honest climbs, and green valleys on the way down. The final stage brings us into Santiago de Compostela and the cathedral square, which is a moment worth arriving at slowly. Each night is in a comfortable historic hotel with breakfast, bags are transferred for us, and rental bikes are included with upgrades available at additional cost.

Day 1: Arrive in Porto and transfer to the start
Image 8: Tour group raising glasses in a sunset toast by the Atlantic

Arrive in Porto, where we’ll all meet at 3 pm at our first hotel. Once everyone has checked in, we’ll get to know our bikes and adjust each one so it’s set up and ready to ride. We’ll finish with a group briefing, where your guide will walk us through the daily routine for the days ahead on our pilgrimage to Santiago.

Accommodation: Historic hotel

Day 2: First pedal strokes on the Camino
First pedal strokes on the Camino — Cycling in Camino de Santiago | Portugal

After breakfast, we clip in and join a route that pilgrims have travelled for more than a thousand years. The first day is about finding your rhythm, getting used to the bike beneath you, and letting the group settle into a pace that works for everyone. Your guide sets the tempo, the support van is never far behind, and a mechanic is on hand if anything needs adjusting. Energy snacks and water refills keep you going between stops. Your luggage travels ahead to the next hotel, so you ride light and arrive to find your bags already waiting for you.

Meals: Breakfast
Accommodation: Ocean view hotel

Day 3: Waymarked stone trails and scallop-shell markers
Image 7: Cyclist beside a Camino waymarker surrounded by green foliage

Today the Camino shows its character. We follow waymarked stone trails through open countryside, with yellow arrows and scallop-shell markers pointing the way at every junction. It’s an easy route to love: no map-reading stress, just your guide, the markers, and the steady turn of the pedals. We pause for coffee, refill bottles, and swap stories with walkers heading the same direction. The van shadows the route all day, so you can hop in for a stretch if you want to, and your bags are moved to tonight’s hotel while you ride. Dinner is your own to choose in town.

Meals: Breakfast
Accommodation: Ocean view hotel

Day 4: Quiet villages and centuries-old churches
Image 5: Historic church tower along the Camino beneath a clear blue sky

Today the Camino slows right down. We roll through small villages where the church is often the oldest thing standing, stopping to look inside when the doors are open and to grab a coffee wherever it smells right. The support van is never far behind, so all you carry is what you need for the ride, and your bags are waiting at the hotel when we arrive. Our guide keeps the pace friendly and handles anything mechanical along the way. Lunch is on your own, which means you get to pick the village café that looks best when hunger hits.

Meals: Breakfast
Accommodation: Historic hotel

Day 5: Hilltop views and green river valleys
Image 6: Cyclist overlooking a coastal bridge on the route to Santiago

A climbing day, and a rewarding one. We work our way up to hilltop viewpoints, take the time to look back at where we have come from, then drop into green river valleys on the far side. Nothing about it is a race; we regroup at the top, refill bottles, and share out the energy snacks before the descent. Waymarkers and scallop shells keep pointing the way north, and the van shadows us the whole day in case anyone wants a lift up the last ramp. We finish at another comfortable hotel with your luggage already in the room.

Meals: Breakfast
Accommodation: Historic hotel

Day 6: Riding through Galicia with fellow pilgrims
Image 12: Cyclists riding together along a shaded woodland trail

Galicia feels different, and you notice it straight away. The trails get busier with walkers and riders heading the same direction, and a steady stream of “Buen Camino” follows us all day. We chat with people from all over, swap stories at the coffee stops, and settle into the rhythm that has carried pilgrims along this route for more than a thousand years. Your guide rides with the group, points out what is worth a pause, and the mechanic sorts any wobbly gear. Dinner is your call tonight, and Galician kitchens are a good reason to go hungry.

Meals: Breakfast
Accommodation: Historic hotel

Day 7: Final stage to the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela
Image 3: Cycling group celebrating their arrival at Santiago Cathedral

The last pedal strokes of the pilgrimage. We roll out after breakfast, following the waymarks north with the support van and mechanic never far behind, trading “Buen Camino” with walkers and riders who have come from all directions. The closer we get, the busier the trail feels, and then the spires appear and we ride the final stretch into the old town together. Arriving at the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela after six days on the road is a moment that lands differently for everyone, so take your time with it. Evening is yours to celebrate in the city, however you like.

Meals: Breakfast
Accommodation: 4 star hotel

Day 8: On the next morning you are free to explore Santigo
Image 4: Buen Camino stone marker decorated with shells and pilgrim keepsakes

Breakfast together one last time, then we say goodbye to each other. We finish the tour in Santiago so you have the option to continue your voyage in Spain or get back to Porto (transfer back not included). Safe travels, and Buen Camino.

My first cycling trip, and even outside my country, couldn’t have been with a better guide. Rodrigo is super patient and responsible with everyone, and he even carefully chose all the accommodations along the Way, so we could rest comfortably after cycling. I LOVED IT!
God willing, I will do other incredible cycling trips like this one to Santiago de Compostela.
