Itinerary

Spend 6 days cycling in search of authentic Japan in Shikoku, the country's smallest major island. Start off by traversing the scenic expressway of Shimanami Kaido and cross tens of miles each day witnessing the clash of nature, tradition, and modernity in Japanese cities, villages, sacred places, and unspoiled wilderness. Join a tour laced with traditional cuisine, quality lodging, and, of course, great cycling under the supervision of your expert local guide.

  • Make your way to Onomichi Station in the morning—accessible by bullet train and close to Hiroshima Airport. Our guided adventure starts with cycling over the world-famous Shimanami Kaido—a 37-mile expressway open for bikes connecting the biggest Japanese island of Honshu to the smallest of the main four islands—Shikoku. We’ll cover 5 islands and bridges, relish the scenic landscapes, and experience the culture of the Seto Inland Sea. Lodging on Day 1 is a Japanese hotel in a stunning location nestled by the shoreline.

Sensational. The ride route was spectacular - the bridges ride at the start and rural Shikoku all stunning.. Some challenging bits, but manageable with the help and guidance provided. My wife and i were pleased we chose E-bikes, and I'd recommend them to anyone who is not a fairly strong rider. With E-bikes most riders would be fine. Great scenery and conditions. Sam has found many back roads/trails to largely avoid busy roads. The accommodation and food (dinners often multi-course banquets) were a real culinary and cultural experience.

Incredible hospitality, expert cycling leadership and guidance and an experienced mechanic in support as well, this adventure was over the top. The accommodations were excellent and we enjoyed some of the best seafood dinners we have ever had in Japan. Shikoku is the road less traveled and we would highly recommend this trip.

Miho and Sam take such pride in their tour around the Shinkoku Islands. That is apparent from the moment you meet everyone involved on day 1. Hidden Japan is the best tour company I have ever used. The six-day cycling ride was terrific, and every detail was covered. The ride over the bridges and through the countryside was amazing. You see a part of Japan that many people never visit. The food and accommodation were also fantastic. It's an experience you should treat yourself.

If you are at all considering this company's trips, just do it. Our 6-day Shiminami/Shikoku trip was a fabulous ride and an even more fabulous gastronomic experience. Immerse yourself in local Japanese cuisine.

Fantastic tour on all levels!!! Miho, Seiji and Abe coordinated seamlessly the numerous logistics to make it stress-free for me and the small group of 5 other riders and one more guest riding shotgun in the support van. I’m a professional guide at a resort at home and can say this tour exceeded expectations 1000 fold! Everyone in my group opted for e-bikes and they were top notch and correct sized Specialized and Giant ones This made the hills easy for me personally, and with Seiji masterfully leading, and Miho in one van and Abe in another (when necessary one or two or all three coordinating to control car traffic), I could safely look around and enjoy Hidden Japan every moment of the way. In addition, this would easily qualify as a culinary tour with Miho as tour organizer ordering up amazing healthy feasts of local cuisine or diverse set meals everywhere we went. Eating well meant great energy on the bike! A traditional onsen bath was so soothing at the end of each day…..and I took advantage of one hotel having coin laundry, and one ryokan having a massage chair. All three guides spoke very good English and we’re all really friendly, interesting and caring. Abe, in particular, surprised and delighted opening up about his fascinating personality and daily life including year round surfing, rum manufacturing from home-grown sugar cane, his own bike shop and three bedroom hotel in the countryside.

10/10 would do this trip again. We arranged it as a private tour to ensure we had a unique experience. It was a truly customized trip which was an adventure of a lifetime. As we are all on similar bikes / speed it was so easy to be flexible to change routes if needed. The guides truly went above and beyond to make it a unique experience for us - from local food stops, plenty of on road snack stops and great viewing stops.

The Shikoku ride is a solid Level 4 ride. Climbs are long with steep sections and challenging downhills. The back roads have good road surfaces, although there are some seldom traveled mountain roads that can be slippery and moss covered when it rains and gravel road sections. And rain it does. If you like riding cloud covered mountain back roads through dense forests with spectacular vistas down mountain gorges. Then this is the ride for you. Highly recommended.

We especially enjoyed the exposure to traditional Japanese Ryokans, and traditional food. As a suggestion, it would be helpful if there was some English provided (written or verbal) explaining what to expect at each ryokan, and what was culturally correct behaviour (for example, in the Onsen). It would have also helped to know what we were eating, especially when travelling with children, who are hesitant to eat what they can't identify.

The trip was as described but the experience was exceptional. Shikoku was a perfect place to explore by bike - such a special part of Japan.

The trip covered a wide range of terrain and experiences - every day had something different: flat, hills, & mountains, quiet forest roads, very small mountain towns & larger cities, great accommodation and varied meals. While the vast majority of the experience was on bike, we did have opportunity to swim in ocean & river, hike up a sacred river, tour castles, etc. The Hidden Japan Travel folks were very personable and made for a fun time. We did luck out rain-wide but in early September, we had some very hot and humid days that made climbing a challenge - fortunately, there were frequent rest breaks with lots of water, fruit and other nice treats.

This 6 day cycle trip was absolutely amazing! Such a well organized tour. We were kept informed throughout and we’re always well taken care of by Miho and Seiji. Nothing was too much trouble and they really went out of their way to make it the best experience ever. The carefully selected hotels and restaurants were all outstanding. We opted for electric bikes for the trip which came in handy for tackling the many hills. With Seiji as our guide we always felt safe and Miho was always close by if we needed extra support. Many thanks to Miho and Seiji for an unforgettable holiday.
