Guided snowshoeing in Courmayeur and Mont Blanc

Snowshoeing Italy’s Mont Blanc Region

Winter in the Aosta Valley has a way of slowing everything down. This four-day, all-inclusive trip is the quieter half of Mont Blanc—I’ve spent enough winters here to know it well. Snow settles deep across the forests and open plateaus, trails stay peaceful even when Chamonix across the border is packed, and there’s nowhere to be but right here, one snowshoe step at a time. The trip moves at an easy pace through Val Ferret, spends a night at the legendary Rifugio Bonatti beneath the Grandes Jorasses, and settles into two days of proper Italian comfort—including a long soak at a spa hotel with Mont Blanc framed right outside the window. It’s less about covering ground than simply being here, wrapped in snow, quiet, and good food.

The adventure, day by day

Four days of snowshoeing through the Italian side of the Mont Blanc massif, in small groups of four to six guests led by an International Mountain Leader. The trip moves from Courmayeur into the Val Ferret valley, spends a night at the legendary Rifugio Bonatti, and finishes with a stay at a luxury spa hotel in Palleusieux. Full board is included throughout, along with all guiding and access to the spa hotel's wellness facilities.

Day 1: Welcome to Courmayeur
courmayeur town winter

Our trip begins in Courmayeur, one of Italy’s most charming alpine villages, tucked beneath the southern flank of Mont Blanc. After checking into our boutique hotel, we’ll gather for a relaxed welcome dinner, get to know the rest of the group, and go over what’s ahead over the next few days. It’s a gentle, unhurried start—no snowshoes required—designed to let everyone settle into the mountains before we head into the backcountry tomorrow. If you’re arriving from farther afield, this is also a good chance to shake off any travel fatigue before the trip properly gets going.

Meals: Dinner
Accommodation: Boutique hotel, Courmayeur

Day 2: Snowshoeing to Rifugio Bonatti
Hiker in winter near Mont Blanc

After breakfast, we transfer into the beautiful Val Ferret, where we’ll review our avalanche safety equipment and make sure everyone’s comfortable with a transceiver, shovel, and probe before setting off. From there, we begin one of the most spectacular snowshoe routes in the Alps, following quiet forest trails and open alpine terrain as we climb steadily toward Rifugio Bonatti, surrounded by the Grandes Jorasses and the wider Mont Blanc massif. Once we reach the refuge, there’s time to relax before a hearty Italian mountain dinner and a night in one of the Alps’ most iconic huts.

Meals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner
Elevation: +439 m (+1,440 ft)
Accommodation: Rifugio Bonatti

Day 3: Snowshoeing and wellness time
Several hikers snowshoeing

After another beautiful morning on snowshoes, we descend back into the valley below. Our reward is an afternoon and evening at a luxury spa hotel in Palleusieux, with thermal pools, saunas, and sweeping mountain views. It’s the perfect place to recharge after two full days in the snow—most of the afternoon and evening is left free to soak, relax, and enjoy the spa facilities at your own pace before dinner.

Meals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner
Accommodation: QC Hotel Monte Bianco, Palleusieux

Day 4: A relaxed farewell
Happy hikers snowshoeing

Following breakfast, we head out for one final, easy snowshoe walk before returning to the hotel around lunchtime. From here, the trip comes to a close—you’re free to continue on to Geneva Airport, extend your stay in the Aosta Valley, or explore more of the Mont Blanc region on your own. Many guests choose to stay on an extra day or two to ski in Courmayeur, ride the Skyway Monte Bianco cable car, or simply enjoy another day of mountain air before heading home.

Famke
UIMLA Mountain Leader
Thanks to her parents, Famke has been spending time in the mountains since a very early age—she was even selected in the Young Netherlands Ski Team! Though Famke soon realized that competitive skiing isn’t for her, she kept on skiing and exploring the mountains with her friends. There’s nothing nicer for her in the world than setting off for a hike with her friends, her dog, and a delicious picnic, which inspired her to sign up for the International Mountain Leader training course in Switzerland. Having completed the course in 2018, Famke’s been taking other travelers to explore the Alps. Whether it’s snowshoeing, trekking, wildcamping, backpacking, or hiking, Famke is happy to show you the beauty of the Alps!

The alps were stunning, like a winter wonderland. Our three day snowshoeing adventure was epic! The trip up to the Bonatti hut was pure magic and our trusty sidekick and star of the trip was Woodstock, Famke’s sweet dog. This was a trip of a lifetime and would highly recommend booking with Famke.

Hiking is about you, nature and hopefully someone else who loves being out as much as you do. Famke loves what she does… and you can tell. I would recommend hiking with her to anyone who’s interested in connecting with the overwhelming beauty of nature. Also… hiking is just a great way of meeting nice people. Thanks a lot Famke! See you soon!

Thank you to Famke and Woody for the trip of a lifetime. My two girlfriends and I set out on an adventure of snowshoeing and quickly learned that Famke and her sidekick are one of the best. The trip was very well thought out and safe as she got to know each and every one of us including our likes and dislikes and physical aptitude. Our hike to the Refugio on our first day was one of the best adventures I can remember. About halfway up, we practiced avalanche protocol over and over again until we got it right. I was so impressed and realized how imperative it is to have these skills under our belt. Once we reached where we were staying in the evening we were met by the host of the Refugio who made us feel so welcome, and our meal was beyond delicious as well as our bottle of wine, rounded out the evening with Woody, relaxing under our table. The scenery was breathtaking and in the morning we made our way up a little farther to our summit, and then back down for a quick rest before resuming our descent. On our last day (I didn’t want it to end) we met up and went to a beautiful Lago and it was just beyond stunning. Famke has got to be one of the best in the business and provides an exhilarating and beautiful and safe experience. I feel like by the end of our three days together as short as it may seem you really bond and feel like you’ve made a new best friend. Please reward yourself and take one of her trips as I can’t wait to get back

The snowshoetrip in Italy was just amazing! I’ll try to sum it up in a few words, but they really don’t do it justice… Serene peace in the mountains, wonderful company with my fellow hikers and Famke, lots of laughter (also thanks to Woody)  and delicious Italian food. The perfect balance of effort and total relaxation in the spa at the final hotel. Highly recommended!

Famke shares with us her love of the mountains, her expertise in hiking and her passion for guiding.
She is perhaps too humble to emphasise what she brings to her trip: it is a unique proposition of adventure, the right physical challenge for the group, variation in activities and the perfect balance between focus and fun. Famke leads in a quiet way and makes us feel we are in the right hands. She also offers flexibility in the planning and activities if weather conditions or group wishes so require.  The cherry on the (well-deserved) cake is of course the spa after the snowshoe trip.
Thank you, Famke and your dog Woody, for a fabulous trip!

This winter my friends and I had the pleasure to go on a snowshoe trip with Famke in the beautiful Aosta Valley in Italy. Famke had planned and arranged the trip carefully beforehand, taking into account every possible situation that could be encountered, in order for us to feel completely safe and secure, which we did. Famke designed our tour to be a perfect mixture of physical effort and some well-deserved pampering. Famke is a very competent and pleasant mountain leader. She knows where to go and also where not to go. She does not take any risks, but has a talent to find the most beautiful places off the beaten track. During the trail, Famke made sure everybody was feeling ok and she adjusted the pace if necessary. The company of her loyal companion, Woodstock the mountain dog, made our trip complete. If you wish to enjoy a hiking holiday in the mountains with friends or family, in winter or summer, I strongly recommend you ask Famke to be your guide. She will definitely add value and fun to your holiday.

Famke and Woody led my friends and I on wonderful snowshoe adventures in beautiful parts of Italy.  They were friendly and made sure we had fun.  Famke was accommodating to our levels of fitness and made sure we all made it safely.  Her knowledge and skills were evident, and Woody was a treat!  We would definitely recommend her to other adventurers!
