Germany Bike Tours

Ride Germany's prettiest paths—river valleys lined with vineyards and castles, a cozy hotel (or cabin) waiting at the end of every day.

Slow Down and See Germany by Bike

River valleys built for riding

Germany’s great rivers do a lot of the work for you. The Moselle Cycle Path runs almost entirely car-free and nearly flat for 190 km between Trier and Koblenz; the Rhine Cycle Route through the UNESCO Middle Rhine Valley is much the same story. Follow the water and the route mostly follows itself—vineyards climbing the hillsides on one side, half-timbered wine villages on the other, and barely a hill to worry about.

A castle around every bend

This is a region that doesn’t seem to know when to stop with the scenery:

    • Burg Eltz, a fairytale castle tucked into a wooded ravine, barely changed since the 12th century
    • Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau, King Ludwig II’s storybook castles near Füssen
    • Reichsburg Cochem, looming over one of the Moselle’s most photogenic towns
    • The Calmont, Europe’s steepest vineyard, rising straight out of the riverbank

Add in Roman ruins in Trier, a Baroque abbey or two, and wine tastings that turn up more often than not, and the “scenery” starts to feel like the main event.

Flat paths, and help for the rest

Most of these routes are genuinely gentle—paved, well-signed, close to flat, the kind of riding that doesn’t ask much of your legs. A few, though, cover more ground or roll through hillier stretches, and lean on e-bikes to flatten the difference. Either way, you’re never expected to grind it out solo: e-bike rental is available on nearly every route here, and a support vehicle is usually never far away.

Somebody else carries the bags

Whether you’re riding with a guide or on your own, the annoying parts are already handled. Self-guided trips come with GPX files, printed route notes, and daily luggage transfers between hotels—your bag beats you there every time. Guided trips add an expert leading the way and a support van trailing the group, ready with water, spare parts, or a lift if your legs need a break.

You don’t even leave the water

A few of these trips swap hotels for a river cruise ship altogether—ride by day, and come home each evening to a cabin with a view, a multi-course dinner, and a sun deck for watching the valley drift by. It’s the same castles and vineyards, just with a different kind of “home base.”

The Bavaria bike tour was an unforgettable experience! The route led through beautiful landscapes and past historic towns. The accommodation was comfortable and the food was excellent. The guide was very knowledgeable and told us lots of interesting stories and anecdotes. We enjoyed the tour and recommend it to anyone who wants to explore Bavaria in an active and entertaining way.

Although I’m not normally a big fan of cycling, this Danube bike tour in Austria changed my mind! The combination of bike and boat was perfect for me as I could always retreat to the comfortable boat after a day on the bike. The scenery along the Danube was simply breathtaking and the food on the boat was also super tasty. I would recommend this trip to anyone who likes to be active and explore new places.

Frequently Asked Questions About Biking in Germany

  • Depends on the trip. Our guided tours come with an experienced local guide who knows the route, the history, and the best spots to stop—plus a support van following along. Our self-guided tours don’t include a guide, but you’re not left to figure things out alone either: you’ll get detailed maps, GPX files, and a support hotline for the length of the trip.

  • Mostly, yes, though it varies by trip. In general, accommodation, breakfast, and route materials (or a guide, for guided trips) are included. Some, especially the river cruises, include full board and most beverages too. Always double-check the individual trip page—what’s covered ranges from the basics to almost everything.

  • Honestly, it depends which trip you pick—this selection spans a real range. Some routes, like the Moselle self-guided tour, are almost entirely flat and beginner-friendly, with a max of around 55 km (34 mi) a day. Others, like the Bavaria or Munich–Prague tours, ask for a decent baseline of fitness and include some climbing, even with e-bike assist. None of these are extreme, but “chill ride along a river” and “hillier multi-day trip” aren’t quite the same thing—worth checking the difficulty listed on each trip before you book.

  • Along the rivers, yes—the Moselle, Rhine, and Danube cycle paths are famously flat and well-paved, which is a big part of why they’re so popular with cyclists who’d rather enjoy the view than fight for it. Head toward Bavaria and the Alpine foothills, though, and the terrain rolls more—which is where e-bikes earn their keep.

  • Yes, on nearly every trip in this collection—either included in the price or available to add as an upgrade. They make the hillier stretches (and the longer days) considerably easier, without taking away from the ride.

  • April through October covers the main season, with May, June, and September generally considered the sweet spot—warm enough to enjoy, cool enough to actually pedal, and the vineyards are either blooming or turning gold depending on when you go. July and August are lovely too, just busier.

  • A guided trip means a local expert rides with your group, handles the route, and usually comes with a few extras like guided city tours or included meals. A self-guided trip means you ride on your own schedule and company, using the maps and GPX files provided—your luggage still gets transferred for you, and help is a phone call away if you need it.
