Bernese Oberland Hiking Tour: 8 Days in the Swiss Alps

Nowhere else in the Alps puts you this close to this much, this easily. The Bernese Oberland has gondolas and cogwheel trains threading up to trailheads that would take hours to reach on foot anywhere else—which means every day starts at altitude, with the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau already in front of you before you’ve taken a step. Over 8 days, we hike between Grindelwald, Wengen, Mürren, and Kandersteg, covering plateaus, ridgelines, and valley floors that most people only see from the train window. The Oeschinensee on the last full day is the exclamation point.

  • Car-free villages and cogwheel trains: The trip moves between Grindelwald, Wengen, Mürren, and Kandersteg using the region's scenic mountain rail and gondola network
  • A proper Swiss finale: The last full hiking day ends at the Oeschinensee—a turquoise alpine lake set beneath towering limestone cliffs, one of the most striking spots in the country

The adventure, day by day

An 8-day guided hiking tour through the Bernese Oberland, covering seven days on foot across some of Switzerland's most iconic alpine terrain. The trip is based across four different villages—Grindelwald, Wengen, Mürren, and Kandersteg—moving between them by cogwheel train and cable car. Daily distances range from 7 to 12 km (4.5 to 7.5 mi), with elevation gain generally kept between 400 and 600 m (1,300 and 1,970 ft). Breakfasts and most lunches are included; dinners from Day 2 onward are on your own, giving flexibility to explore each village's restaurants independently.

Day 1: Arrival in Grindelwald

Arrive in Grindelwald in the afternoon and check into the hotel. A transfer from Zurich Airport to Grindelwald is included if needed. Once everyone is settled, we meet for a welcome drink and a briefing before sitting down together for the first dinner of the trip.

Day 2: Reeti area and Bachalpsee

A picnic lunch at the top rounds off the morning before we head back down.

We board the cogwheel train from Grindelwald up to Kleine Scheidegg, the iconic mountain pass that sits directly beneath the Eiger’s north face.
