A Relaxed Walking Holiday in Provence: Food, Wine & History

What if the best part of your day in Provence wasn’t the hike, but everything that came with it? On this 8-day guided hiking trip, we take it slow on easy, sunlit trails through vineyards, lavender-scented hills, and stone villages that have barely changed in centuries. The pace is relaxed, so we actually get to enjoy it, stopping for local wine tastings and views that don’t ask to be rushed. And just when you think it can’t get better, the views stretch wider, the light softens, and another perfect village appears. Evenings slip into that golden-hour glow painters chased for centuries, ending with long Provençal dinners, local wine in your glass, and the kind of quiet village atmosphere you’ll wish you could bottle and take home.

Adventure Highlights

  • Walk it like Cézanne: Follow easy, sunlit trails through vineyards, lavender fields, and landscapes that inspired some of Provence’s most famous artists
  • Sips worth the steps: Savor local wine tastings and long, memorable dinners at the heart of Provence’s food and drink scene
  • Endless village charm: Wander through centuries-old stone villages and historic sites where Provence’s charm quietly unfolds

The adventure, day by day

This one’s simple, in the best way. We spend eight days moving through Provence the way it was meant to be experienced, on foot, at an easy pace, with time to actually enjoy it. The trails are gentle, winding through vineyards, lavender-scented hills, and those impossibly good-looking villages you’ve definitely seen somewhere before. We don’t rush past the views, we stop for them. We don’t overpack the days, we let them breathe. There’s wine where it’s made, dinners that stretch out longer than planned, and history that just shows up without needing a lecture. And at the end of it all, you’re not tired, you’re just… very, very glad you did this.

Day 1: Avignon to Séguret
Dentelles de Montmirail in France

We meet our guide and group at Avignon TGV train station at 3 pm, then take a group transfer to Séguret (included, 50 minutes), our base for the first 2 nights. Our hotel sits at the foot of the Dentelles de Montmirail, overlooking the Rhône Valley and surrounded by vineyards, so we get an immediate taste of Provence’s relaxed village charm. After checking in, there may be time to visit Séguret before we meet again at 6:30 pm for an orientation meeting, followed by our first dinner together.

Meals: Dinner
Accommodation: 3-star hotel in Séguret

Day 2: Hilltop villages, castles, and Provençal heritage
Vaison la romaine in France

We ease into the rhythm of Provence with a day that blends history, views, and gentle walking. A short transfer brings us to Vaison-la-Romaine, where we explore a town that spans both Roman and medieval times, including a visit to its ancient Roman site. We then continue to Sainte-Madeleine du Barroux Abbey, the starting point of our hike. A short walk leads us to Château du Barroux, where sweeping views of Mont Ventoux open up before us. We take time to explore the château before returning to our hotel at the end of the day.

Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner
Accommodation: 3-star hotel in Séguret
Hiking: 6 km (3.7 mi), 2 hours
Elevation gain/loss: +150 m (490 ft) / -180 m (590 ft)

Day 3: Dentelles de Montmirail and wine tasting
Sault lavender fields

We start the day with a short transfer to Gigondas, then set off on a scenic hike toward Beaumes-de-Venise. The trail climbs gently through vineyards and along hillsides framed by the jagged ridges of the Dentelles Sarrasines, with wide views opening up toward Mont Ventoux. As we loop around the Dentelles de Montmirail, the landscape softens into orchards and vineyards before we reach the village. At the end of the hike, we visit a local winery for a well-earned wine tasting, then transfer to Sault for the next stage of the journey.

Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner
Accommodation: 4-star hotel in Sault
Hiking: 11 km (6.8 mi), 4.5 hours
Elevation gain/loss: +250 m (820 ft) / -400 m (1,315 ft)

Day 4: Gorges de la Nesque
Gorges on a sunny day of France

We begin with a short transfer to Monieux, then head out into one of Provence’s most striking natural settings. The trail takes us deep into the Gorges de la Nesque, where towering limestone cliffs rise above us and the air feels cooler and wilder. We pass quiet corners like Lake Bourget and the tucked-away Saint-Michel Chapel, following the gentle course of the river through a landscape that feels far removed from the busy world. After the hike, a short transfer brings us back to our hotel.

Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner
Accommodation: 4-star hotel in Sault
Hiking: 10 km (6.2 mi), 4 hours
Elevation gain/loss: +400 m (1,315 ft) / -400 m (1,315 ft)

Day 5: Chemin des Ocres and Gordes
Gordes view in France

We transfer to Gordes, one of the most beautiful villages in France, where cobbled lanes wind between tall stone houses set into the hillside beneath its château. From here, we set out on a hike through some of Luberon’s most iconic landscapes, including the Village des Bories and the Sénanque Abbey, a peaceful monastery tucked into a quiet valley and still home to Cistercian monks. After taking it all in, we return to Gordes on foot, ending the day in one of Provence’s most memorable settings.

Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner
Accommodation: 4-star hotel in Gordes
Hiking: 10 km (6.2 mi), 4 hours

Day 6: Les Baux-de-Provence to Saint-Rémy-de-Provence
Saint Remy de Provence

We transfer to Les Baux-de-Provence, one of the region’s most striking villages, and explore its historic streets and château. From here, we hike up to a ridgeline with wide views before crossing the Plateau des Antiques, overlooking the Crau plain and the Alpilles. The trail continues through the Vallon de la Fontaine, then descends along a rocky path through pine forests toward Saint-Rémy-de-Provence. We pass near the archaeological site of Glanum and the Saint-Paul-de-Mausole monastery, where Van Gogh once stayed, before reaching our hotel on foot. In the evening, we head out to a local restaurant for dinner.

Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner
Accommodation: 3-star hotel in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence

Day 7: Saint-Rémy-de-Provence to Avignon
Palais papas in France

A short transfer starts the day before we set off through pine forests toward the rocky Plateau de la Caume. We follow the ridgeline of the Alpilles, with wide-open views stretching across the landscape, then continue toward an old Roman bridge where our transfer awaits. In Avignon, we check into our hotel before heading out for a guided visit of the historic city, including the Palais des Papes. In the evening, we gather for a final dinner together in town.

Accommodation: 4-star hotel in Avignon
Hiking: 9.7 km (6 mi), 3.5–4 hours

  • This walking holiday in Provence is designed to be relaxed and enjoyable, but you should feel comfortable staying active for a few hours each day. A basic level of fitness is required. You’ll be hiking up to 5 hours and 11 km (6.8 mi) per day, while gaining up to 400 m (1,315 ft) in elevation.

The trails have no technical difficulty, but some sections can be uneven, unmaintained, and rocky. If you’re comfortable walking regularly and spending a few hours on your feet at a steady, easy pace, you’ll do just fine.

  • You’ll only need to carry a small daypack with your daily essentials during the hikes. Your main luggage is transported by vehicle between hotels, so it will be waiting for you at each new stop without you having to think about it.

Each participant is allowed 1 piece of luggage to be transported and has a limit of 15kg/33lbs.

  • The following items are required for this walking holiday in Provence. When packing, think layered clothing systems that work together and can be easily added or removed. Luggage transfers have a limit of 33lbs/15kg—please stick to this as extra items are not easily stored by the team.

Avoid cotton or cycling-specific clothing. Synthetic fabrics dry quickly and perform well in active conditions. Merino wool is also an excellent option—it dries fast, is comfortable to wear, and naturally resists odors even after extended use.

    Clothing:

      • Hiking boots/shoes — waterproof, sturdy molded sole, deep tread and ideally well broken in
      • Hiking socks — one pair for every day or two days of the trip (hiking/sport specific padded socks, no cotton please)
      • Sun hat — wide brimmed hat or baseball cap/bandana combo
      • Warm hat & gloves — lightweight beanie and light-to-mid weight fleece or wool gloves
      • Hiking shirts — non-cotton, breathable short sleeve and/or long sleeve shirts
      • Warm top — mid-weight sweater or pullover of wicking material such as merino wool, fleece or polypropylene
      • Insulating jacket — down-fill or synthetic-fill insulated “puffy” jacket or warm, heavy weight fleece jacket
      • Hiking pants & shorts — nylon pants and shorts, zip-offs or leggings
      • Base layer/long underwear — 1 pair of wicking tops and bottoms that are lightweight to midweight, synthetic wicking materials such as polyester, polypropylene, merino wool, etc.
      • Rain gear — waterproof jacket and pants or high-quality poncho, breathable fabric such as Gore-Tex® or coated nylon (for the pants look for side zippers that will easily allow pulling them over footwear)
      • Casual clothing & footwear – comfortable clothes and shoes to wear in the evening after activities.

    Gear:

      • Backpack — a 30–45 liter sized comfortable pack with a waterproof cover for use day-to-day while hiking
      • Personal luggage — small duffel bag, rolling suitcase or backpack
      • Hydration system — 2+ liters capacity, either water bottles or bladder/hose system and an additional water bottle
      • Trekking poles — telescopic/adjustable poles to help reduce the impact on joints and support hikers in steep and/or rocky terrain (strongly recommended)
      • Headlamp — preferably with an L.E.D. bulb that works with AA or AAA batteries
      • Picnic/lunch kit — knife, plate or bowl, box with closeable lid, utensils, etc.
      • Phone, charger, power bank
      • Waterproof travel case or pouch — used to keep important documents (i.e. passport, health/travel insurance, etc.) & phone safe from weather/water
      • Sunglasses, sunscreen, & lip balm
      • First aid kit — your guide carries emergency gear and a comprehensive kit, but pack whatever you feel you need
      • Personal toilet paper kit — toilet paper, wet wipes, sanitizer & sealable plastic bag(s) for carrying out used paper/wipes
      • Toiletries

      • Prescription medication — with emergency back-up supply
      • Cash in local currency
