This 3-day tour takes you deep into Iceland's Westfjords, the country's most remote and least-visited region, with an English-speaking local guide and a comfortable minibus doing the driving. Starting and ending in Reykjavik, the route covers dramatic sea cliffs, black lava fields, red sand beaches, and cascading waterfalls, with plenty of stops to walk, take photos, and take it all in. Two nights are spent in comfortable country hotels, with breakfast included on the mornings you wake up in the Westfjords. It's an easy way to see a side of Iceland most visitors miss, without renting a car or planning a route yourself.

Day 1: Entering the Westfjords

We leave Reykjavik in the morning and head north toward the Westfjords. Along the way, we stop at Eiríksstaðir, a reconstructed Viking-age longhouse marking the birthplace of Leif Erikson, and pass through Vatnsfjörður Nature Reserve before reaching the rusted wreck of the Garðar, Iceland’s oldest steel ship, resting on the shore. From there, we continue to Látrabjarg, Europe’s largest seabird cliff, before winding down to Breiðavík’s golden sand beach for a walk along the water ahead of settling in for the night.

Day 2: Red sands, waterfalls, and mountain views

After breakfast, we drive along Rauðasandur before continuing into the Fossfjörður valley toward Dynjandi, the Westfjords’ best-known waterfall, cascading down the mountainside in six wide, fan-shaped tiers. From there, we pass the pier at Önundarfjörður and climb to the Bolafjall viewing platform, standing 636 m (2,087 ft) above the fjord, for sweeping views over the coastline. We end the day in Ísafjörður, the region’s largest town, where we settle in for the night.

Day 3: The Seven Fjords Road back to Reykjavik

After breakfast, we head home along the Seven Fjords Road, stopping first at Ósvör, a reconstructed 19th-century fishing station. We continue past Óshólar lighthouse and the Arctic Fox Center, dedicated to Iceland’s only native land mammal, then stop by the seal colony at Hvítanes and the stream at Gervidalsá on the way back toward the capital. We arrive back in Reykjavik sometime between 4 pm and 7 pm, depending on stops and road conditions.
