In order to join this Westfjords tour, basic fitness is required, and no hiking experience is necessary. This is a scenery-first, driving-based tour, with short walks of a few minutes to a couple of hours at each stop rather than a set daily hiking distance.

This is a scenery-first tour, so expect a fair amount of time in the minibus—it’s the best way to reach the Westfjords’ most remote corners. On average, you’ll cover around 300 km (186 mi) per day, spread across 4 to 5 hours of driving, with frequent stops for photos, short walks, and sightseeing along the way. The distances feel shorter than they sound, thanks to the scenery outside the window.

Northern lights need real darkness to appear, and from June through mid-August, when this tour runs, Iceland’s midnight sun keeps the sky bright around the clock. Thhis means that there’s no dark window for them to show up in, no matter how active the aurora is. Your best shot is booking toward the very end of the season, in early-to-mid September, when nights start turning properly dark again and sightings become possible, though still weather- and activity-dependent. If seeing the northern lights is a priority for your trip, a fall, winter, or early spring departure is a much better bet, when the long, dark nights make it a realistic goal rather than a long shot.

The starting point of your Westfjords tour is Reykjavik. To get there, most people fly into Keflavík International Airport (KEF). From there, you can take a shuttle service, public transport, or rent a car to reach Reykjavik. You will meet your guide at 8 am in Reykjavik—pick-up locations are specified at checkout.

It is recommended to arrive at least one day before the tour. If you’re flying in from the U.S. or will be landing early (4-6:30 am), you should be able to join the tour, but some risks would follow (i.e if the flight gets delayed) and could, therefore, miss out on the tour. This is, therefore, not recommended! Accommodation for the night prior to the tour is at your arrangement.

The meeting location depends on the tour and which time you’re meeting with your guides. Options include the Reykjavik City Hall, Hallgrimskirkja, or the Reykjavik Campsite. Departure time is between 8 and 8:30 am.
