  • These guided walking holidays in Crete are suitable for all skill levels. You will walk from 2 to 4 hours per day, with 200 to 400 m / 656 to 1312 ft of elevation gain per day—you can find detailed hiking times and elevation changes in the itinerary.

You can expect easy paths and tracks with some rocky and uneven sections, but no significant technical difficulties. The difficulty lies not so much in the length of the hikes or the difference in altitude, but in the intense heat during the summer. Many of Crete’s hiking trails, such as the famous Samaria Gorge, are well-shaded in parts, but some exposed areas can get very hot. Since the dry conditions and intense sun can lead to dehydration, it’s important to carry plenty of water and stay hydrated.

  • Here’s a list of the equipment you need to bring:

      • A rucksack, travel bag or compact suitcase up to 15kg for your personal belongings
      • A comfortable day pack large enough to carry all the items you might need throughout the day (around a 30-50L bag)
      • Telescopic walking poles
      • Good quality waterproof walking boots with a sturdy molded sole, deep tread and good ankle support
      • Comfortable technical hiking pants and shorts made of quick-drying material
      • T-shirts or technical underwear made of quick-drying material
      • A technical shirt with long sleeves
      • Comfortable hiking socks
      • Spare clothes for layering
      • A light fleece/warm jacket
      • A rain jacket and/or a small umbrella
      • Light sport shoes

      • Sunhat
      • Toiletries (high-SPF sunscreen, hand sanitizer, bug spray, toilet paper, etc.)
      • A small personal first aid kit (personal medication, disinfectant, plasters, blister treatment, antiseptic masks, hydroalcoholic gel, etc.)

Dress comfortably and for the weather in clothes you can move in. We suggest bringing clothing appropriate for the season. Layers are best and don’t wear jeans.

  • Crete experiences typical Mediterranean weather, with hot, dry summer days and warm evenings. Daytime temperatures typically range from 28°C to 35°C (82°F to 95°F), with occasional peaks in July and August. Rain is extremely rare during the summer.

The heat can make summer hiking demanding, particularly at midday. Early morning or late afternoon treks are recommended to dodge the most intense sun. Make sure to stay hydrated for the best walking holidays experience in Crete.

  • Group sizes and pricing

      • For these walking holidays in Crete, the usual client-to-guide ratio is 14:1.
      • It takes a minimum of 5 people for this tour to operate. The maximum group size is set at 14 participants. In exceptional cases, the group may include one extra person, e.g. if a couple signs up when there is only one place left, or if there are simultaneous registrations.
