These guided walking holidays in Crete are suitable for all skill levels. You will walk from 2 to 4 hours per day, with 200 to 400 m / 656 to 1312 ft of elevation gain per day—you can find detailed hiking times and elevation changes in the itinerary.
You can expect easy paths and tracks with some rocky and uneven sections, but no significant technical difficulties. The difficulty lies not so much in the length of the hikes or the difference in altitude, but in the intense heat during the summer. Many of Crete’s hiking trails, such as the famous Samaria Gorge, are well-shaded in parts, but some exposed areas can get very hot. Since the dry conditions and intense sun can lead to dehydration, it’s important to carry plenty of water and stay hydrated.
Crete is more than just Greece’s largest island—it’s where mountains meet myths. This 8-day trek will take us to the island’s southwest, away from the busy tourist paths. We’ll hike through towering gorges, along sunny beaches, and into old mountain villages with breathtaking views. As we walk, Crete’s rich history will come to life around us—we’ll discover ancient Roman ruins, Venetian harbors, and Minoan palaces, some dating back over 4,000 years. By the end, you’ll feel like you’ve traveled back in time, uncovering the stories that shaped this remarkable Greek island.
Forget modern life for a while and slip into the shoes of Minoan royalty, Roman governors, and Venetian merchants
Hike part of Europe’s longest gorge, Samaria, and explore the narrow Aradena Gorge

Explore Crete's less-traveled paths on these 8-day walking holidays. Hike part of Samaria Gorge, visit quiet mountain villages, and uncover ancient history. Dress comfortably and for the weather in clothes you can move in. We suggest bringing clothing appropriate for the season. Layers are best and don’t wear jeans.
Crete experiences typical Mediterranean weather, with hot, dry summer days and warm evenings. Daytime temperatures typically range from 28°C to 35°C (82°F to 95°F), with occasional peaks in July and August. Rain is extremely rare during the summer.
The heat can make summer hiking demanding, particularly at midday. Early morning or late afternoon treks are recommended to dodge the most intense sun. Make sure to stay hydrated for the best walking holidays experience in Crete.
