Technically it’s a cycling tour. But with winery lunches, chef-hat restaurant dinners, and a support vehicle doing the heavy lifting, the line between cycling holiday and wine tour gets pleasantly blurry. Over 7 days in South Australia, we ride four iconic rail trails through the Barossa, Clare Valley, Adelaide Hills, and McLaren Vale at a fully supported, unhurried pace. Groups cap at 10 and sell out pretty fast. Come for the cycling. Stay for the Shiraz.

Adventure Highlights

  • Eat, drink, pedal: Experience 4 celebrated wine regions, with gourmet winery lunches and exclusive tastings woven into the route
  • The magnificent four: Ride the Barossa, Riesling, Amy Gillett, and Shiraz Trails back to back across South Australia’s greatest wine country
  • Everything’s sorted: Travel with a local guide, a support vehicle, and luggage transfers throughout, in a group capped at 10

The adventure, day by day

This 7-day cycling holiday traces four of South Australia's greatest wine regions on smooth, purpose-built rail trails. Starting and finishing in Adelaide, we ride the Barossa Trail, the Riesling Trail through Clare Valley, the Amy Gillett Bikeway in the Adelaide Hills, and the Shiraz Trail in McLaren Vale at a genuinely unhurried pace. A dedicated support vehicle travels with the group throughout, luggage is transferred between stops, and each riding day includes winery stops, gourmet lunches, and quality restaurant evenings. Groups are capped at 10, accommodation is great, and the only thing more scenic than the trails is what's in the glass at the end of them.

Day 1: Welcome to Adelaide
Botanic bar Australia

We arrive in Adelaide and transfer to our hotel in the city center. After settling in, we meet the group for a 2-course welcome dinner at a local restaurant. It’s a chance to get acquainted with fellow riders and get excited about the week ahead.

Meals: Dinner
Accommodation: Hotel in Adelaide

Day 2: The Barossa Trail
Sevenhill winery

We transfer to the Barossa Valley for our first day on the bike, riding along the off-road Barossa Trail through one of Australia’s most celebrated wine regions. The route takes in iconic stops at producers including Penfolds, Maggie Beer’s Farm Shop, and Yalumba, with wine tastings and gourmet food sampling woven into the ride. It’s a warm, sociable day that sets the tone for the rest of the week.

Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner
Accommodation: Hotel in Barossa Valley
Cycling: 25 km (16 mi)

Day 3: The Riesling Trail to Clare
Riesling trail biker

After breakfast in the Barossa, we transfer via the iconic Seppeltsfield Road to Auburn and begin the Riesling Trail, one of South Australia’s most loved cycling routes. We pedal through the Clare Valley’s rolling wine country on a converted railway line, passing vineyards and small towns all the way to Clare. The highlight is a long, relaxed lunch at Skillogalee Winery, well regarded for its exceptional food and Clare Valley wines. The evening is free.

Meals: Breakfast, lunch
Accommodation: Clare Valley Country Club (or similar), Clare
Cycling: 35 km (22 mi)

Day 4: Back through Clare Valley, on to Hahndorf
Clare valley bikers

We ride back toward Auburn on a slightly different route through the Clare Valley, with optional detours along the way and a platter-style lunch at O’Leary Walker Winery. After some time in the saddle, we transfer to the Adelaide Hills and settle into Hahndorf, Australia’s oldest surviving German settlement, with a charming heritage main street and excellent access to the Hills’ wine and food scene. Two nights here. The evening is free.

Meals: Full breakfast, lunch
Accommodation: Hotel in Hahndorf
Cycling: 35 km (22 mi)

Day 5: The Amy Gillett Bikeway
Biking in South Australia

Today’s ride follows the Amy Gillett Bikeway through the lush Adelaide Hills, a smooth and easy path through vineyards and native bushland. Along the way, we stop for chocolate and wine tastings before the day wraps up with a special dinner at the chef-hatted restaurant at Mount Lofty Estate. For many riders, it’s the standout meal of the week.

Meals: Breakfast, dinner
Accommodation: Hotel in Hahndorf
Cycling: 25 km (16 mi)

Day 6: The Shiraz Trail and farewell dinner
Bikers lunch in Australia

We transfer to McLaren Vale, South Australia’s coastal wine region, for today’s ride on the Shiraz Trail, a flat, paved path winding through the state’s most scenic vine country. After an exclusive wine and food experience at Wirra Wirra winery, we transfer back to Adelaide for our final night together and a group dinner to close out the week.

Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner
Accommodation: Hotel in Adelaide
Cycling: 20–25 km (12–16 mi)
